I don't know if I've ever read this. ? I know?! I need to (re)read it. But I do know I watched the hell out of the 1987 movie as a kid. I had a crush on Dickon. ?

Listening to this on #netgalley and think I just discovered my favorite new insult! The gardener just called Mary a “meddlesome wench”!!! 😂😂
Lovely to read now as I prepare my own garden for spring. So many motifs and themes to explore here, both as a child and an adult. Haunting to think how few years after this book was published Europe was plunged into the darkness of the First World War.

My niece knows she can borrow any book from my shelves and she has borrowed these 3 from me more than once so I have made sure to buy her, her own copies for her own shelves to help build up her library.
Three very different books #WithAnimalsOnTheCover. Elizabeth Young is one of my favorite romance authors, and A Girl's Best Friend, about dog-lover Izzy finding love with a prickly vet, is so good! The Secret Garden is chock-full of animals and flowers and kid's magic, and Sam Irby's book has nothing to do with rabbits, but I still recommend reading every single thing she's written! #3Books

I'd read this when I was in elementary school, but could only really remember impressions of it. What a lovely story. Could do without the racism near the beginning though. Didn't remember any of that, so either my school book was edited, or I was too young to understand what I was reading. But other than that it was a heartwarming story. And now I want a secret garden for myself.
Everyone else immediately goes straight to The Secret Garden when they see a door in a wall, right? It must be there.

Congratulations on your Litsyversary Barbara!
The Secret Garden is set on the wild Yorkshire Moors (along with Wuthering Heights!). This was one of my favourite books when I was a child and I keep meaning to re-read it now, to see if it still has the same magic!
“To let a sad thought or a bad one get into your mind is as dangerous as letting a scarlet fever germ get into your body. If you let it stay there after it has got in you may never get over it as long as you live.”
Had a nice re-visit with this one this week since its flower garden season here in the South. The story was just as lovely as I remembered. I've always loved the part where Dickon points out what is still “wick“ in the garden and I always think of that when I'm cleaning up my garden after the winter. All the ⭐s

“ One of the new things people began to find out in the last century were that thoughts , just mere thoughts are as powerful as electric batteries, as good for one as sunlight or as bad for one as poison” ☀️ ☠️

So excited about starting this one 🥰
Goes perfectly with our little plant based garden tea party

Surprisingly, this was my first reading of this classic!
Though the language and political correctness are very dated, this is a charming tale of friendship and, dare I say magic, in the English countryside. I can see why this is an enduring classic - positive thinking, healthy exercise, and a dose of imagination propel the narrative. I am not a fan of the outdoors, but even I thought of the smell of soil and all things Spring!
It‘s a snowy day so here‘s a picture from days ago...that‘s Colorado weather for you.
I loved this book. It‘s a book for young‘ns which was good for me as there was just love and companionship and respect, no crushes or love triangles. (Do I need to save myself some heartache and not read the sequel?)
I loved how compassionately the author dealt with children who are not well-mannered and the feelings of adults who are hurting.
Beautiful & sweet
Thanks for the tag @Meaw_catlady !! This rock cress is the first thing blooming in my garden every year. Bonus - hyacinth bulb I planted very late last fall that I didn't think would come up!!

"I thought it would be dead," he said.
"Mary thought so at first," said Colin. "But it came alive."
"You are so like her now," said Mary, "that sometimes I think perhaps you are her ghost made into a boy."
'I am sure there is Magic in everything, only we have not sense enough to get hold of it and make it do things for us.'
"Of course, there must be lots of Magic in the world," he said wisely one day, "but people don't know what it's like or how to make it. Perhaps the beginning is just to say nice things are going to happen until you make them happen."
'If there was a doctor anywhere who could make you forget you were ill instead of remembering it, I would have him brought here. It is because my cousin makes me forget that she makes me better.'
"His nose does turn up and he has a big mouth and his clothes have patches all over them and he talks broad Yorkshire, but - but if an angel did come to Yorkshire and live on the moor - if there was a Yorkshire angel - I believe he'd understand the green things and know how to make them grow and he would know how to talk to the wild creatures as Dickon does, and they'd know he was friends for sure."
'It was not until afterwards that Mary realised that the thing had been funny as well as dreadful - that it was funny that all the grown-up people were so frightened that they came to a little girl just because they guessed she was almost as bad as Colin himself.'
"When you see a bit of earth you want, take it, child, and make it come alive."
There are a lot of great movies coming out in 2020, including several based on books. There are 9 adaptations that I am especially excited about and I want to talk about them with you! You can check out my latest video here: https://youtu.be/Ym9tgT9JNGQ

Mary Lennox, is a selfish young girl. She is constantly spoiled by her family and servants, yet is later disowned by her cold parents.
While living in the orphanage after her parents disowned her, a cholera disease spread through and killed her servants and parents. Mary survived yet was alone. Later, she found a secret garden. The garden brings Mary joy and truly helps her find who she is.
I don‘t want to write an extensive review on this one. Is there anything I can say that hasn‘t already been said? I‘m sure I recognized, to some degree, that this story was meaningful when I was a kid but I‘m also certain that the bulk of its symbolic depth went way over my head. I‘m so glad we chose this book for our book club. Revisiting it through adult eyes was an enlightening experience and I‘m really looking forward to our group discussion.

My very late check in, my gardens are over run but sunflowers are blooming, pumpkins are growing, roses are beautiful, two weeks of neglect has still left beauty and opportunity. Onward!
Childhood classic that has some important things to say about mental health and physical health as well as the importance of connecting to the natural world. https://cannonballread.com/2019/08/the-secret-garden-elcicco/
So @Heideschrampf asked for my #top6reads .
For the first six months this is my selection. Even if I thought, I read more books that I didn't like, I could have chosen more. 😉
Sorry @ju.ca.no I just had to finish this beauty today. So many gorgeous illustrations and such a wonderful translation. 🤩😍 I read another edition last year, but this one was so wonderful, I am still a bit speechless.
