Know the Mother | Desiree Cooper
post image

Got this signed copy of KNOW THE MOTHER at the annual meeting of the Association of University Presses. Desiree Cooper was the *phenomenal* opening plenary speaker. Thank you for the copy, Wayne State University Press! Also, this view down is from the 52nd floor of the hotel. #ReadUP

What do these books have in common? They were published by University of Illinois Press and selected by CHOICE as Outstanding Academic Titles of 2018. I particularly recommend BEYOND RESPECTABILITY by Dr. Brittney Cooper.

ReadosaurusText @rubyslippersreads It is a great film history book by an author who is a leading professor in the field! 5y

Well, today was a #disaster in terms of getting work done, but this book is about a real disaster, Hurricane Katrina, and the diverse group of women elite activists who used their power, money, and privilege to raise political awareness and support for the hardships Katrina left in its wake.

Anna Karenina | Leo Tolstoy

I picked a Yale University Press edition for the #AnnaKareninaReadalong. Reviewers mentioned Gary Saul Morson‘s introduction is not to be missed and Marian Schwartz does a great translation. Seeing as I have no insight/knowledge to compare that to.. I‘m taking the reviewers‘ recommendations on it. 😂

ReadosaurusText Strongly like!!! 😍😍😍 I work at a different University Press and love seeing people support UP books! #readUP 6y
Lcsmcat That‘s a striking cover! 6y
Jess_Read_This @ReadosaurusText So neat!! Sounds like you have a dream job! I was excited to find this one after reading tons of reviews on different editions. The work Yale UP put into this one sold me. I‘m definitely a UP convert and will be checking for more of those editions now. 6y

DrexEdit Checking that edition out from the library... I'm intrigued to read the introduction! 😊 6y
Jess_Read_This @Lcsmcat I thought so too! ❤️ 6y
Jess_Read_This @DrexEdit Let me know what you think! One reviewer said Morson brings a lot of insight to the story that isn‘t traditionally talked about in introductions. 6y
writerlibrarian Amazing cover 6y
ReadosaurusText @Jess_Read_This I do have my dream job! The fiction, translation, and non-fiction UPs do is so thoughtful. My press does more non-fiction humanities, and I learn so much in the daily! 6y
Dragon I love the cover! 📚 I‘m suffering book envy as just downloaded the ebook. Maybe I need a real book. 😂👍🐉 6y
rubyslippersreads Gorgeous photo and cover! 😍📚 6y
Notafraidofwords We just processed this one at work and a professor said this was a great translation. Great pick! 6y
Jess_Read_This @writerlibrarian @rubyslippersreads I‘m a little obsessed with the cover. ❤️ 6y
Jess_Read_This @Dragon It‘s pretty gorgeous in person and I highly recommend this edition from what I‘ve seen/read so far. 6y
Jess_Read_This @ReadosaurusText How cool. What a great place to work and grow as a reader! I can‘t wait to discover a few more UP editions. 6y
Jess_Read_This @Notafraidofwords Oh cool! This makes me happy to hear more recommendations for this edition! 6y
elkeOriginal I would have chosen this edition just for the stunning cover! 6y
Theresa I almost purchased this edition based on this post & comments. But I stopped myself because I already have audiobook, Kindle, & paperback copies of other editions. And I've never read the book! What if I don't like it?? I've put it in my wishlist to consider after I read & fall in love with the book! 6y
Jess_Read_This @Theresa I will definitely share any insights I get from the introduction for sure. I hope we both end up falling in love with the book! 6y

Happy born day to this charming new book! LADIES OF THE TICKER shares the overlooked and overshadowed stories of women in finance from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Women have been a critical part of business, finance, and the stock market for centuries. Seems about time women should stop having to prove their worth in the business arena, doesn't it? #ReadUP #businesswomen #WallStreet

Kindred | Octavia E. Butler
post image

Kindred was one of the first books I read this year, and since then I have been recommending it to everyone who will listen. I followed Kindred up with a literary biography of Octavia E. Butler, where I learned she was relentless in her quest to carefully craft her stories and for fame and financial success. #bookpairings #fallintobooks @RealLifeReading #readUP

EchoLogical I too recommend it to anyone who will listen. Lol 7y
ReadosaurusText @EchoLogical Teamwork! We'll get everyone to read it before long. 😃 7y
EchoLogical @ReadosaurusText Yes we will! I'm hoping it will eventually be made into a movie starring Lupita N'yongo. 7y
ReadosaurusText @EchoLogical That would be amazing. 7y
