Just got back from the library's curbside pickup. What's Left of Me is Yours is for the #ReadingWomen challenge and the rest are #CanLit titles to get started on the Shadow Giller project with @Lindy 🍁

Lindy A fine start on the #shadowgiller - I'm curious what you will think about Jaclyn Dawn's, since that wasn't one that I had flagged to read as a possibility. 4y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Lindy will do about the update! My library had it available, and it is on the Crazy list so I thought, let's give it a try! 😉 4y
charl08 I love the Canadian stickers your library uses. 4y

A couple of years ago, this book came to me in a postal book club at apparently the wrong time: I started it and pretty much immediately closed it. Since then, I‘ve read 4 Kingsolver novels and became a major fan, so this was my choice for a book about food for #ReadingWomen challenge.

I loved it. Yes, it‘s a bit pretentious at times, and for a lot of us, the steps that this family took to be locavores don‘t seem very realistic at first⬇️

sprainedbrain BUT, for someone like me who grew up on an Iowa farm, helped harvest chickens as a kid, and still gardens on a large scale, yet doesn‘t make too much of a conscious effort to eat locally outside of my own garden, the book was inspiring. There are a LOT more things I could do to make sure our food is more local and responsibly farmed. I love the authors narration and, as always, her style. I‘m getting a paper copy to reference! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5y
sprainedbrain Oh! This was also my #BookSpin for June! @TheAromaofBooks 5y
SamAnne I live in a place where I can grow a large garden, have chickens, etc and where getting locally grown meat affordable. I know personally everyone I get meat from. But it isn‘t an option for everyone for sure. I do try to eat in season as much as possible and local. But I need my citrus! And coffee. It is an good thing to think about where food comes from and eat a bit closer to home if it is an option. (edited) 5y

sprainedbrain @SamAnne I can‘t raise animals where I live, but we do farmers markets and buy from the Amish as often as possible for stuff that we don‘t raise. Still, I am absolutely buying food with lots of mileage on it when it‘s out of season! Citrus and bananas and greens mainly. I can definitely do better! 😃 5y
ChasingOm Oh yay!! I‘m pretty sure it was my book that came at the wrong time. Glad that you came back to it and loved it. 😄 5y
sprainedbrain @ChasingOm it WAS yours!! I tried looking back to see who might have sent it for ReadersGonnaRead so I could tag you, and couldn‘t figure it out! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Great review!! I think eating locally is such a great way to help improve the quality of what we consume, and the quality of life for animals being raised for slaughter. It's definitely not something I'm perfect at doing, but I'm working on it!! May have to check this one out!! 5y
Amandajoy I read this about 10 years ago, before I started gardening. Your review makes me think I should reread it now that I‘ve started gardening to see what I can improve on. 5y
Chrissyreadit I have it at home. Surely I will read one day. I love Kingsolver. Brought you a little Haiku about my overflowing unread bookshelves. 🤣😂 5y
Daisey Really fascinating review. I‘ll have to look this one up! 5y
Clwojick 😂👏🏻🎉You‘ve gotta love when a book covers a bunch of prompts across multiple challenges! 💓 5y
LeeRHarry This author is a firm favourite of mine too 😊 have yet to read this one though. 5y

I‘m excited to start this book about four women who shaped a cultural shift from valuing industry back to nature. And I love the cover! #readingwomen

Which ones have you read?

I've read Ali Smith, Andrea Levy, Linda Grant, Helen Dunmore, Marilynne Robinson, Anne Michaels (probably my favourite, I loved this book), Ann Patchett, Kamila Shamsie, Barbara Kingsolver, Naomi Alderman, Zadie Smith, Lisa Mcinerney (another one I loved), Valerie Martin, Kate Grenville, Carol Shields (my mum's book group read three of hers when I was a teenager, so I read them too) and Tea Obreht.

#ReadingWomen

TrishB I‘ve read 12 of these 😁👍🏻 5y
Cathythoughts I‘ve read 4 ! I‘ve taken a screenshot & will have a look at them all ❤️👍🏻 5y
Billypar I've also read 4- both Smith's, the Patchett, and my favorite, Obreht's The Tiger's Wife. 5y

CarolynM I've read and enjoyed the Ali Smith, Andrea Levy, Madeleine Miller, Ann Patchett and Naomi Alderman books. I bailed on the Kate Grenville. I've read other books by Lionel Shriver and Carol Shields but not the ones here. 5y
squirrelbrain I‘ve read 12 too @TrishB ! I‘ve been trying to read this year‘s longlist but had only achieved 8 before the library closed. I‘m waiting to see what‘s on the shortlist next week and then I‘ll make sure I read all of that. 5y
charl08 @TrishB Impressive! Any favourites? 5y
charl08 @Cathythoughts hope you can get hold of them... 5y
charl08 @Billypar I was underwhelmed by Obrecht: but liked her new one much more. 5y
charl08 @CarolynM There are some great books on this list, I think. 5y
charl08 @squirrelbrain I just bought two in the audible sale as they'd not come into the library in time. Still only read 4 though- Woodson a stand out for me. 5y
TrishB From these The Lacuna is my fave ❤️ 5y
squirrelbrain I think I‘d agree with that @TrishB - my fave too! 5y
squirrelbrain I think The Dutch House has been my favourite so far @charl08, then there‘s 3 that I struggle to choose from (Red at the Bone, Dominicana and Girl, Woman, Other) 5y
BarbaraBB Are these all former winners? I‘ve read 14: the McBride (hated it), didn‘t much like the Alderman, Tremain and Shields, enjoyed the Levy, Jones, Robinson, Zadie Smith and Adiche, loved the Shriver, Dunmore and Miller. My favorite is either the Shamsie or the Michaels. 5y

I'm continuing on some of my Netgalley books. (And shhhhh I asked for more today. 😚) I just finished Shadowplay and now reading this Pale Morning one. Looks like a great one to use for the #ReadingWomen challenge prompt about a woman artist.

Ok I wanted to read this author long ago. We are reading it for #readingwomen bookclub and I decided to finish it for my #stayathome24in48 #readathon I didn't read as much as I expected but it was something. I liked the book was a real page turner but was not that amazing for me as I expected...#bookly

In case you were wondering - yes, you do need lesbian wild west librarians in your life.

My major quibble - at only 176 pages, this reads more like an extended short story, and I have soooo many questions. Please let this be the start of many adventures in this world!
