What's Left of Me Is Yours
What's Left of Me Is Yours: A Novel | Stephanie Scott
23 posts | 14 read | 35 to read
A gripping debut set in modern-day Tokyo and inspired by a true crime, for readers of Everything I Never Told You and The Perfect Nanny, What's Left of Me Is Yours charts a young woman's search for the truth about her mother's death and the lengths that a family will go to keep safe what they hold most dear--whether or not that is one another. In Japan, a covert industry has grown up around the "wakaresaseya" (literally "breaker-upper"), a person hired by one spouse to seduce the other in order to gain the advantage in divorce proceedings. When Sat? hires Kaitar?, a wakaresaseya agent, to have an affair with his wife, Rina, he assumes it will be an easy case. But Sat? has never truly understood Rina or her desires and Kaitar?'s job is to do exactly that--until he does it too well. While Rina remains ignorant of the circumstances that brought them together, she and Kaitar? fall in a desperate, singular love, setting in motion a series of violent acts that will forever haunt her daughter's life. Told from alternating points of view and across the breathtaking landscapes of Japan, Stephanie Scott exquisitely renders the affair and its intricate repercussions. As Rina's daughter, Sumiko, fills in the gaps of her mother's story and her own memory, Scott probes the thorny psychological and moral grounds of the actions we take in the name of love, asking where we draw the line between passion and possession.

I was super excited for this one, based on Litsy reviews. My DH is half Japanese-American and deep into some genealogy projects for that side of his family. So the cultural aspects of this book interested me the most. The rest was just tepid for me. Too much that felt like a romance novel. And I wished for much more on the Japanese legal system, which is fascinating. I had a hard time finishing it … sigh. #thebibliophage2021

Librarybelle I‘m sorry this one was just a meh for you! I know my review was one of the reviews you read about this! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Librarybelle It‘s all good. Might‘ve been a bit of the timing in my life also. Still, I suspect I‘ll recommend it to my niece who might love it. 💕 3y

With alternating viewpoints, Scott delivers an emotional love story, with a lie that leads to tragic consequences. It‘s beautifully written - I found echoes of the style of one of my favorite books, Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. And, a great cultural lesson of Japan, both currently and nearly 20 years ago.

Very good read! I picked this for #Booked2021 #UnderRatedOrLesserKnownBook , as I found this title listed on a few lists that fit this prompt.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Oooh. This looks so good!!! 3y

Sumiko‘s mother Rina died when she was a child in what she was always told was a car wreck. But then she discovers her mother was murdered by the man her father hired to seduce her. The chapters alternate between mother and daughter, telling the story of each. I thought it was beautifully done and found some of the differences in the Japanese judicial system (compared to the US) fascinating.

Professional_Book_Dragon Yes! I just finished this last month and thought the differences in the judicial system were interesting too! Very interesting read and I loved the way she wrote. It felt almost nostalgic when reading the mother‘s story. 3y

What a great finish for #Round9 of #LMPBC 📚 This book didn‘t really fit in one genre for me. It was a slow burn, but in the best way. I also really enjoyed the cultural aspects the author sprinkled in throughout the story. @The.Great.Catsby I know there was a mixup with the mail, so I‘m going to send this one to you tomorrow!

I loved this book! It was so beautifully written. It was hard to put down plus I learned a ton about Japan. I think this is a reread. Thanks @MoniqueReads305 #lmpbc

MoniqueReads305 I thought this was going to be a thriller. But it was so well done I wasn't disappointed about the mix-up. 4y

A man hires a firm to seduce his wife so he has grounds for divorcing her, and she is found murdered by her father. The novel moves back and forth in time between the wife and her daughter as an adult, looking into more of the situation surrounding her mother's death.

ReadingEnvy This was a real story coming out of Japan and the author took the idea and ran with it. It's a small thing but I also really loved how she writes the surroundings of each scene - it never bogged down the narrative but I always had a clear picture in my mind of the scene in ways I don't usually have.
4y
ReadingEnvy The author thanks Louise Doughty in the afterword and I feel like if you have read Doughty you will like this too..it has a feeling of being a thriller but isn't really a thriller, crime elements without being a crime novel.

Just got back from the library's curbside pickup. What's Left of Me is Yours is for the #ReadingWomen challenge and the rest are #CanLit titles to get started on the Shadow Giller project with @Lindy 🍁

Lindy A fine start on the #shadowgiller - I'm curious what you will think about Jaclyn Dawn's, since that wasn't one that I had flagged to read as a possibility. 4y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Lindy will do about the update! My library had it available, and it is on the Crazy list so I thought, let's give it a try! 😉 4y

“They had thrived in the shadows, in pockets of time, snatched and secluded. They could not exist in the light.”
WOW!! What an impressive #debut. I‘m not one who usually enjoys a love story, but this book left my heart shattered. Based on true events, a young mother is murdered leaving her daughter searching for answers to memories she can‘t seem to place. Set in Tokyo, the author beautifully weaves Japanese culture & traditions into this book.

TrishB Hi 👋 plodding on. Along with the rest of the country, not in a good state! 😘❤️ 4y
Cinfhen Just saw this message @TrishB 😢I‘m sorry it‘s still so tough by you. Hope family is doing well/ what happened with your niece‘s wedding??? 4y
TrishB It got cancelled 😢 currently rescheduled for 4 September 🤞🏻🤞🏻 but no indication when things like hotels, restaurants etc might be open and still approx 400 people dying per day. It‘s all very depressing and feels never ending. ❤️ 4y
Cinfhen It is so depressing @TrishB hopefully by Sept your niece will be able to have her wedding 👰🏼 Last Sunday I “attended” a Zoom wedding. My friend‘s son got married in their backyard. It was actually pretty magical. There was something very pure about the wedding. I‘d say 20/ 25 people were there. Just immediate family. Parents, some grandparents and siblings. No aunts/ uncles or cousins which im sure was very sad 😢 But the couple looked happy 4y
TrishB I think you literally still can‘t get married in this country at the moment. For religious weddings they have to be in the place of worship, none of which are open. For non religious weddings a registrar has to marry you at a licensed venue, none of which are open. I don‘t think they‘ve changed these laws, so no one is currently getting married. Hopefully we will be in a much better place by September 🤞🏻🤞🏻 4y
