The War that Saved My Life | Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

The library is so quiet and peaceful today!

Maya is stocking up on Battle of the Books reads, and I picked up a stack of #WinterGames reading, one of which is the December selection for my book club. I don‘t usually read this genre, so we‘ll see how I like them. I signed up for @Clwojick ‘s #WinterGames, but as a #renegade and didn‘t join a team, to keep it super low pressure. 🤣

Clwojick If you change your mind about the teams, let me know. There‘s no pressure at all. And we‘ll have some Hanukkah games as well! ❄️♥️ 5y
alisiakae @Clwojick if there‘s space, you can add me to a team! I‘m feeling more holiday-y than I usually do. 🤣 5y
Clwojick Sounds perfect! 5y
Kimberlone I loved doing Battle of the Books when I was in school! 5y
alisiakae @Kimberlone She did elementary BoB for two years; this is her first year on a middle school team! 5y

One of the most fascinating women of the Middle Ages is Hildegard von Bingen, a composer, philosopher and polymath. She was given to the church at age 8 and rebelled against life as a handmaiden by turning to books and writing. #TakeMeToChurch #LyricalApril

LeahBergen @AlaMich and @raeintheworld Have you read this one? 😀 8y
AlaMich @LeahBergen I've heard of her but haven't read this. I will now though. 😊 Sor Juana of Mexico sounds similar: brilliant girl who didn't want to marry so she entered a convent so she could study and write poetry. 8y
LauraBrook I've been interested in Hildegard since high school - so happy to know that this book exists! 8y

saresmoore I love Hildegard! @LauraBrook 8y
Melissa_J Such a good book! 8y
raeintheworld @LeahBergen I've read some non fiction about Hildegard, but this looks excellent! Thanks! 8y
LeahBergen @AlaMich I've heard of her, too, but haven't read anything about her. 👍🏼 8y
LeahBergen @LauraBrook @saresmoore @Melissa_J Oh, good! I'll have to move it up the TBR. 8y
clbeyer @ReadingMidwife Hey, look! Have you seen this book? 8y
Cinfhen Sounds like a true #renegade 🙌🏻 8y
ReadingMidwife @clbeyer no, but putting it on my TBR. 8y
Suet624 I've read a lot about her. Love her music as well. 8y

In 1860, a group of female students at the Pennsylvania Academy, upset by their exclusion from life drawing, started their own classes outside the campus, posing for each other sometimes clothed, sometimes half-draped. Although word of the RENEGADE courses embarrassed the Academy, Ladies' Life classes were not added to the curriculum until 1868... Wow, when I saw the word renegade, I immediately thought of you! @Cinfhen #lyricalapril #renegade

Cinfhen LOVE this picture and great choice for #renegade 🌺🌸🌼 8y
Smrloomis This picture is beautiful! 👏🏽💐 8y

JessicaJernigan I went to Bryn Mawr. I have a lot of beautiful prints by Elizabeth Shippen Green. 8y
DivineDiana @JessicaJernigan How wonderful! On both counts! I noticed in the book that many of the photos are attributed to Bryn Mawr College. I am curious if there is original art by the women that I could see there? Such a beautiful campus! Have you walked the Labyrinth? (edited) 8y
JessicaJernigan I know that the college owns some original art, and I suspect that it's available for viewing by special arrangement, but I don't know if any art that's permanently on display. And it is a magical place. The labyrinth wasn't there when I was an undergrad, but I have walked it on visits. 8y
DivineDiana @JessicaJernigan Thank you for the information. I am so inspired by these strong women! And excited to learn they were a part of my community! Plan to do some exploring to learn more. They used to live on Bryn Mawr's campus in the summer to escape the Philadelphia heat.🎨 8y

I'm going to attempt to cover three prompts in one here, which may or may not actually work. Malala is definitely a #diamond in the rough, and those who know her would probably consider her a #renegade. And while I'm not sure if this book was originally written in another language, I'm going to assume it was in order to tag it as #BestInTranslation. #LyricalApril #AprilAmazingReads

Cinfhen I think that was well played.... 8y

I'm thinking that desperadoes are #renegades, right? 😉 This novel, narrated by the last surviving brother in old age, covers the youthful adventures and violent history of the Dalton Gang. #LyricalApril

Cinfhen So many ways to define #renegade ....your choice definitely works💕👍🏻 8y
