The Heretic Royal | G.A. Aiken

Pickpick

Not as much fun at the first two, but introduced a lot of new and interesting characters as well as real politic into this fantasy world at war.
The 4th eldest sister tries to be recognized as an adult and makes some stupid decisions while trying to help her sister the queen build an alliance with two other queens who might bring blood and war to their doorstep.
3/5 read for dragons as well as centaurs but less bloody battles

Ok @CSeydel I‘m calling it! Shield of Sparrows was my favorite book of the year! 🎉 This was a year of epic Sanderson fantasy and finding tons of new authors. Wishing everyone a great 2026!

CSeydel Love it!! 5d
AudiobookingWithLeah I really liked Shield of Sparrows. I'm planning on listening to the Graphic Audio of it right before book #2 comes out. 3d

I picked this book because of the bingo spots I needed for #ISpyBingoDec @TheAromaofBooks. A collection of 4 novellas. Of course, Kelly Armstrong got my attention. I bailed the second novella by Jeffe Kennedy, too confused to continue, but the 3rd by Melissa Mark I loved. The first book finished for #Welcome2026Readathon

I hesitated to read this because of the cover tbh- and the cover is sort of misleading! I Loved this book! It is one of my favorites for this year! I feisty fmc with weather witch powers, forced marriage, a king battling the odds to save his people…. monsters- bad people… morally gray people… good people… questionable choices- bravery, deceit all tied up in a book I read in 2 days! Romantasy- with spice and a great story for most of book!

Kenyazero This cover is a questionable choice 🤭 glad you went for it, though! I love when a might-not-read becomes a top favorite. 2w
Chrissyreadit @Kenyazero I do wonder how many people chose not to read this because of the cover… 2w
Clare-Dragonfly What do you mean, that looks like a perfectly normal ‘90s romance cover! *sees 2014 publication date* Oh… 2w
Chrissyreadit @Clare-Dragonfly 🤣🤣🤣🤣 It‘s Avon books … 2w

I‘ve only dipped my toe into Romantasy, but I found this first book in this duology enjoyable. The world is a little confusing at first, but I loved the characters. (We ride at dawn for Gargoyle!!)

Bette Those last two pages crushed me…cannot wait for the sequel. 4w

I just realized I have not been posting books as I read- no clue how that happened!!! I had a hard time getting into this book- and for the first half would have considered it a so-so, but as parts came together I began to enjoy it more and by the end was satisfied with the direction it went in. This is the first of a duology- and I would love to hear other thoughts/discuss with anyone else who read it.

lil1inblue I constantly forget to post reviews. 🫠 I swear I'm reading! 😅 2mo

Thatbooknerd I‘m behind on my reviews too. I‘m not sure if I feel pulled to read this book yet but the cover is absolutely gorgeous and I love the title too. 2mo
Chrissyreadit @DGRachel Yes!!! I loved Bartholemew and did not see the twist at all!!! 2mo
Chrissyreadit @JenniferEgnor I would not rush to read it until the second book comes out in a way- It is very similar in style to Naomi Novak. I think i loved the authors other books from the beginning. BUT the last 25% completely redeemed it for me. 2mo
DGRachel This was my first book by this author and I was absolutely enamored by the writing (I think I like One Dark Window a smidge more, although I didn‘t like the sequel to that one as much). I did not expect Bartholomew‘s story to be what it was and it made me sob. I did see the big twist coming though and I don‘t love it, but I‘ll definitely be picking up the next book. 2mo
Chrissyreadit @DGRachel I knew the Abbess would be bad - I did not expect that the gargoyles and diviners were children who died or were dying- or that the king - who is only 17 would be so bad!!! especially for what he did to Maude. I thought the Heartsore Weaver was really sad too. And the sprites… so sad. I LOVE how Bartholemew was written and am very worried about how he will fare in book 2 with his injuries. 2mo

Alluring cover. Intriguing world-building. Quirky gargoyle sidekick. Sweet budding romance. Devastating villainy. I‘m in for Book 2.

⭐️4/5
A great fantasy with romance. Beautiful world building, captivating characters. It does set up for a sequel which I personally never like in a book, hence loss of a star. Will definitely be continuing though.

This book was fun to read, but I was expecting a little more from it. The quest that they go on, I thought it would be a little more difficult, considering how many others had tried and failed. The Diviners was an interesting concept, but they should have figured out what their fate was going to be after 10 years. It felt like things fell into place too easily for Sybil so there wasn't much tension in her story. The ending was a big disappointment

Butterfinger Oh no. I really enjoyed the duology. I was going to pursue everything she wrote. I will still read it, but I won't be in a hurry. 2mo
ReadingOver50 @Butterfinger I still liked it. Just in retrospect there were some problems. 2mo
