Absolutely hilarious collection of short science fiction. Not much plotwise, more satiric vibes. The gossip of intelligent machines was a high point.

Soubhiville Oh fun! This is the first I‘ve seen of this! 16h
willaful @Soubhiville I think it may be rather hard to find. None of my Libby libraries had it but my local library had a limited edition print copy! 16h

When the yogurt took over, we all made the same jokes--“Finally our rulers have culture,“ “Our society has curdled,“ “Our government is now the cream of the crop,“ and so on. But when we weren't laughing about the absurdity of it all, we looked into each others' eyes with the same unasked question--how did we ever get to the point where we were, in fact. ruled by a dairy product?

4 Stars • The Answer Is No by Fredrik Backman is a quick, funny read that‘s pure Backman—witty, warm, and a bit absurd. Lucas, a grumpy introvert, just wants to game and eat pad thai in peace, but a rogue frying pan in his building‘s recycling room sparks a hilarious mess of nosy neighbors, petty apartment board drama, and even a cult calling him an angel. ⬇️

suvata It‘s a light, clever jab at bureaucracy and social media, with enough heart to make you care about Lucas‘s reluctant dive into community. Not as deep as Ove or Anxious People, and the second half gets a tad wild, but it‘s a cozy, laugh-out-loud novella that‘s perfect for a chill evening. Totally worth the hour or so it takes to breeze through!

Told very tongue in cheek in the style of “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” This short story/novella will quickly have you chuckling (or cringing in frustration) at the absurdity of people and life.

This was a quiet short story told from the viewpoint of a snail. Admittedly, I read it to bump up my “books read“ count for the year. But I enjoyed it. And it makes me to want to pick up another of hers. I've been contemplating a re-read of Mrs. Dalloway. Perhaps now is the time.

📸 I've never been to Kew Gardens but it looks inviting.

One of the last books I bought. Used a gift certificate I got for Xmas. Sort of an impulse buy. One of the authors whose name I knew but was never exposed to as an English major.

shortsarahrose I read a few Borges stories in college as part of our “freshman studies” curriculum. Really interesting work. I still think about “The Immortals” over a decade later. (edited) 1mo

Anyone else believe that organizing books is a complete hobby in itself?

Putting together my summer reading.

As with all short story compilations, I enjoyed some more than others, but each one was unique. Each took place 100 years after the US and British invasion and it was eye-opening and thought-provoking to see how each author processed this and chose to represent the future — some shining light on the after effects of the war through speculative fiction while others leaned heavily into science fiction.

GatheringBooks Wow, scifi from Iraq - that is, indeed, a first at least for me. Perfect book for the #ReadTheWorld2025 challenge. 1mo
