Caterina I read this book back in 2012 and didn't like it. I believe I thought it vulgar and also inaccessible due to not knowing Spanish. I was also 18 at the time. Would it be worth a second try? 8y

wellreadredhead @Caterina It is vulgar and it does include some Spanish words, but those are on purpose because of the narrator. If you didn't like it because of those reasons, I wouldn't suggest you try it again. It's meant to be provocative and I don't find the few Spanish words to make the writing inaccessible. There are just words in Spanish that don't translate perfectly. 8y
Caterina @collegecatlady Maybe it was a mix of Spanish and an unfamiliar culture. I was really disappointed because I wanted to like it and everyone said it was amazing (and it was certainly my own shortcoming that made me not like it)! Maybe it was too provocative for me - I think I didn't like the narrator and didn't feel emotionally drawn in. 8y
wellreadredhead @Caterina I can understand that, but I was drawn in because of the poverty. I grew up very poor and Diaz's writing felt like home. 8y
NovelGirl82 This sounds like a great read! 8y
