mcctrish Previously on Lark Rise ……. 1d
willaful Hehehe...

What on EARTH was that saying about dogs and butter? I couldn't make heads or tails of it. 😂
1d
Bookwormjillk I know I read this chapter but I can‘t remember it. Sounds like it probably doesn‘t matter. Like The Hotel last year I think this probably is better on TV. 1d
BarkingMadRead @willaful your guess is as good as mine 🤣 1d
RamsFan1963 Every time I see one of these bikes, it reminds me of the TV series The Prisoner. 1d
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk this chapter was all over the place!! 1d
dabbe This chapter was definitely a skimmer one. And I totally missed the butter saying--that was one of the paragraphs I just gave a glance to. C'mon, Flora, please give us a plot! 😂 1d
willaful @dabbe second verse, same as the first... I don't think there's a plot a'comin'! 1d
BarbaraJean @willaful @dabbe I suppose it would be odd if the second book suddenly veered into a plot with actual character development instead of random unconnected tidbits of life in Lark Rise… but a girl can dream 😆 1d
dabbe @willaful 😭😭😭 ... oops, that's for MYSTERIES OF UDOLPHO. 😂 24h
dabbe @BarbaraJean Boy, you said it! #randomnesseverywhere!!! 24h
Ruthiella @willaful I guess what is meant is don‘t waste something worthwhile (butter) when there is an easier way to get what you want? 19h
Bklover At least no one is weeping or fainting! 16h

Bookwormjillk I don‘t even need drama- just some sense of a connected story would be nice! But you‘re right on the Christmas Story connection 😂 2w

mcctrish This made me flinch 2w
TheAromaofBooks I did think it was interesting that the “mother village“ was smaller than the “hamlet.“ I get that it's the location of the home farm, which makes it more important, but it also seems like more people would live there! 2w
Librarybelle While I don‘t mind very minute details about every day life, a part of me is wondering how in the world they came up with a TV series for this. I guess lots of TV magic, unless we get into storylines in the book very soon. 2w
julieclair @mcctrish 😂😂😂👍 2w
julieclair 🥱😴💤😪 2w
dabbe I almost wrote this yesterday and am in agreement with all of you so far: is there a plot anywhere in our future? 🙏🏻 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig It made for a wonderful sleep story. I fell asleep to audiobook almost immediately. 2w
willaful @dabbe I looked it up on wikipedia and from what I can glean... no. How did they make an entire show about this?! 2w
Bklover @Crinoline_Laphroaig I keep falling asleep too! I keep thinking how different this is from our last adventure. No crying or fainting here! 2w
BarbaraJean @willaful Noooo!! I keep thinking there will be a semblance of a story when we get to the next chapter… you have shattered my hopeful delusion 😩 2w
dabbe @willaful I don't know if I can read 500+ pages of that. 😬 2w

eeclayton I've been enjoying the descriptions so far, but I wouldn't mind if things started happening sooner rather than later. 2w

Ruthiella I‘m enjoying this look at a lost time and place, but taking it with a grain of salt regarding things like children grew up without neuroses because they played outside in all weathers etc. 2w
TheAromaofBooks Yes, this is interesting but... not very story-ish as of yet 😂 2w
Bookwormjillk I hope this isn‘t boring too. I was getting invested in Edward and what‘s her name today but then it said we‘re not going to talk about them any more. PS I can see the pram in the preview but not the post. (edited) 2w
mcctrish @eeclayton it‘s pretty wordy for not much happening @TheAromaofBooks it‘s pretty much just a written accounting of a day in the life @Ruthiella kind of makes you think the author time travelled back from our current phone raised generation to make sweeping generalities 2w
Bklover @Ruthiella Yes! And also that being “soundly spanked” made them not repeat the behavior as opposed to “laying up complexes” that will spoil their later lives. 🙄. I‘m starting to think that there may not be much plot here. @TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish @eeclayton 2w
willaful All valid complaints but I am actually enjoying it. I hope we do get some story soon though.

I kind of feel the author is a little dishonest? She's writing like it's perfectly fine that the two intellectually curious kids get no encouragement or help but I don't believe it left no scars. And I don't believe there weren't any other “different“ kids who had a hard time with their way of life, either.
2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm caught up! Although I did skip over Chapter 1 pig killing. 2w
julieclair I keep falling asleep as I read. I think this might be boring. Hoping for a plot to emerge soon. 2w
rubyslippersreads @Bookwormjillk It seems odd that we wouldn‘t hear more about Laura; she‘s the main character in the TV show. 🫤 2w

Luke-XVX Jeanne Tripplehorn though, good lord !!! 3w
AllDebooks Lol 🤣 3w
dabbe @Luke-XVX I think it was Anne Archer, though they both look a LOT alike! 🤩 3w
Luke-XVX Haha I stand corrected! (Now I remember her from Patriot Games) 3w
mcctrish Todays chapter could have been the whole book #justsaying 3w
eeclayton At least now we know what was behind the veil. Even if it was a very WTF kinda explanation. 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish Right?! 😂 Also, who else was shocked that Laurentini is her first name?! I definitely thought it was a last name. 3w
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly that‘s the mystery right there 🤣🤣🤣 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish The real mystery of Udolpho: Who Are These Udolpho People Who Name Their Kid Laurentini? 3w
TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish - LITERALLY what I was thinking when I was reading this - this is like a synopsis of all the actually interesting parts of this story that we weren't allowed to know about for some reason 😂 3w
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks I definitely think it would have been more effective if we had learned what Emily read/saw earlier on and then revealed what it all meant at the end. Explaining it away immediately after revealing the mystery made it so much less shocking as a reader 3w
TheAromaofBooks @peanutnine - I totally agree!! I think if we knew what Emily did - that there was a half-decayed body in a hidden room - EVERYTHING would have been way creepier than just “something is there“ - and then in the end we get the big reveal about it not being a real body. As it is it was just kind of - it's a body! PSYCH! The end. lol 3w

BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I‘m so relieved 😰 3w
mcctrish Well that was action packed @Clare-Dragonfly they also don‘t read or finish thoughts or ever let us know what‘s going on! Emily is haunted by papers she burned and didn‘t read except for a few words which she won‘t recount to us 😡 3w
Bookwormjillk This book is almost over and I feel like we‘re still in the introduction. 3w
eeclayton @mcctrish I also really want to know what she saw behind that veil in the castle of Udolpho 😡 3w
mcctrish @eeclayton is this the mystery of udolpho? Unfinished thoughts? Things not described? Conversations not had? Things we missed cuz we fainted ? it‘s certainly not tears not shed #rivershavebeencried #lakeshavebeenfilled 3w
dabbe Your picture says EVERYTHING about this book that I simply could not finish. Absolute kudos to all of you who could! You are my inspiration! 💙❄️💙 3w
AllDebooks @mcctrish 😅🤣🤣 I actually feel cheated. This is supposed to be one of the most iconic, ground-breaking gothic novels and it's pure melodrama eeked out forrrrreeeevvvvvvver #teenagevoiceandeyeroll 👀🙄 Where all the ghosts and mysteries at? 3w
AllDebooks If you use the analogy of a walk in the park for the twists and turns of actual plot alongside all the flimflam melodrama that padded it out, we actually just walked every bloody peak in the Pyrenees. 3w
mcctrish @AllDebooks yay I got my steps in this week/month 3w

Clare-Dragonfly Emily persists in thinking the Count is an honest, nice guy who really cares about her well-being as he repeatedly shoves his obsessed buddy in her face 🙄 4w

mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly 🤣🤣🤣 4w
AllDebooks Oh, we are so close to the end. The book, sanity, who knows? 🥳 I'm struck by the difference in writing style between this and Frankenstein, considering there are just over 20 years between publications. Mary Shelley was still in her teens when she wrote it. 4w
eeclayton Not to defend the Count, but I have the impression that he's been friends with Du Pont for much longer than with Emily, so it kinda makes sense to me that he wants to promote his happiness. Which of course doesn't make him any less annoying from E's point of view. 4w
BarkingMadRead @eeclayton that‘s a very good point 4w
TheAromaofBooks @eeclayton - I also think the Count sees sweet, lonely Emily at a time when being a single woman was actually somewhat unsafe & knows that his young friend is an upstanding guy who loves her and would take good care of her (vs taking advantage of her and stealing all her money). Like it's annoying to E because she doesn't want to marry him, but lots of people married for convenience, so unless the Count forces the issue, I can't fault him too much 4w

Clare-Dragonfly We finally get the story! Secret passages in the walls! 4w
Bklover I am behind! My oldest daughter has been in the hospital and I haven‘t read a word in a week. I will catch up, I hope! (She will be fine) 4w
TheAromaofBooks @Clare-Dragonfly - Apparently any and all ghosts are actually people in walls 😂 4w
TheAromaofBooks @Bklover - Hope you daughter is doing better!!! 4w
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks little did we know that this is actually a horror story 🤣 @Bklover I‘m so glad she will be ok, sending hugs! 4w

BarkingMadRead @mcctrish so frustrating! 1mo
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish I do think the whole point of this book will be we‘re supposed to forgive Val and be happy for Em when she ends up with him. 1mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk better a loser than being alone #amiright 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish You‘d think she would have learned from her aunt that a loser is NOT better than being alone! 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Raise your hand if you didn‘t know it was Valancourt helping Theresa the moment she said she couldn‘t say who it was 🤛🏻 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I was torn between him and the creeper, it could have gone either way I guess 🤣 I also half wonder if it was the creeper that got shot as well 🤣 1mo

Bookwormjillk 10 chapters left! 1mo
BarkingMadRead @peanutnine #obviously 🤷🏻‍♀️ this is usually the point where I would binge read the end, but I feel like I still wouldn‘t know anything, so why bother 🤣 @Bookwormjillk #hallelujah 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I gotta be honest, I freaking love Annette and her complete inability to keep a secret 😂 1mo
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks without Annette, we wouldn‘t know a damn thing 🤣 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly There doesn‘t seem to be much acknowledgement that Annette‘s husband has disappeared! 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Linguistic note: I see that Annette has switched from calling Emily “mamselle” to “madam”! This matches up with something I noted in the book I just finished—in English, Mrs was for a long time just a title of respect for an adult woman of a certain class, even if she wasn‘t married. The Mrs versus Miss for marital status distinction wasn‘t solidified until the mid-19th century. Emily is probably Madam now that she‘s inherited. (edited) 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly ohhhhh that‘s interesting! And poor Ludo ☠️ 1mo

mcctrish In the words of me “WTF?!” 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly So, just like with Ludo, we get the Count‘s POV when nothing interesting is going on, and then something happens and we don‘t get to know anything about it. 🤨 1mo
TheAromaofBooks Someone needs to rewrite this book except with the interesting parts actually IN THE STORY 🙄 1mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Yes! And leaving out 80% of the #verdantverdure . 1mo
