1. After my adventure at Second Story Books last weekend, I went to my favorite winery where there was a Peruvian food truck. Inca Kola, chicken sandwich, and yuca fries. Plus they have finely started bottling Sauvignon Blanc.
2. New sun shirt from Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
3. The Nationals finally have a sponsor patch on their uniforms, and it‘s AARP 😂
4. Blue Diamond wasabi & soy sauce almonds are delicious. ⬇️

This is a travelogue with commentary about America in the 1960s and a poodle sidekick. I sensed the goal was to find something profound through the people met and adventures had on the way, but I think his search was unsuccessful. It was still an interesting trip with some glimpses of what he was looking for. And the dog doesn‘t die at the end so I‘m just thankful Steinbeck didn‘t wreck me with another one of his stories.

dabbe I have rarely roared with laughter reading a Steinbeck book (but, boy have I cried!), but the scene with Charley and the bears at Yellowstone is a masterpiece of humor. It could stand alone as its own read. 🖤🐾🖤 (edited) 3w
Oryx I enjoyed this one immensely 🐩 3w

Well written but the author had a lot of white privilege that was not acknowledged or addressed, but that tracks with the time period it was written.
After her divorce the author decides to travel, mostly to developing nations, where she joins in the local communities, gathers inspiration for her writing, and builds a global network of friends.
2/5 read for a well written travel story, but also know the age of the author and the time period

Travels with Charley, by John Steinbeck (1962)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Premise: The famed author undertakes a road trip across the United States to reconnect with ‘real America‘, accompanied by a beloved aging pet.

Review: This is a fascinating portrait of a divided country that is still enlightening 65 years later. Cont.

Mattsbookaday Particularly harrowing is his description of traveling through the South at the height of the battles for racial integration. Obviously aspects of the discussion are problematic from a 2025 perspective, but Steinbeck‘s keen eye and discerning mind make it a valuable snapshot of a time and place.

Re-read this because a work friend is going to Norway next year and I remembered Bill Bryson going. Interesting to remember what traveling in Europe was like in the 90‘s.

TheBookHippie OMG and the 80s!!! It‘s so different now. 1mo

Man, I loved this book so much! I randomly found it at a secondhand store and thought it looked interesting, and took it on summer holiday - so glad I did. An amazing adventure travelling the world, fascinating to read about the different people and experiences she and her husband had, and the massive variety between each one. Highly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

3⭐. It's divided into 4 parts. I thought the 4th part was most interesting. Charlie the dog was precious. It's nonfiction taking place in 1960.

Amiable I loved this book! 3mo
dabbe The scene with Charley and the bears ... 🤣😍🤣 3mo
BooksandCoffee4Me I love this book! When I first read it in high school, I realized I needed two things in life — a dog and a car. 😊 3mo
