In 90's Edmonton, Molly MacGregor dreams of a life worthy of her adored Penguin Classics and of writing The Great Canadian/Edmontonian Novel. But summers selling shoes at West Edmonton Mall and semesters with pretentious English Lit profs don't seem to be cutting it. But this year, she just might find truth and beauty in the place she finds herself.

Charming, witty, and thoroughly delightful. I loved spending time with Molly. Highly recommend!

"Last night, I found myself perusing the shelves in our family library the way one might gaze reflectively into the refrigerator looking for that perfect bedtime snack."

"What's weirder," Eugenie asked, "that Maureen has so many shoe-store guys after her or that they're all named Gordon?"
"Being surrounded by Gordons does seem to be a distinctly Canadian occurrence."

An Academic Question | Barbara Pym

A Pym published posthumously. Pym wrote two editions of this novel, & her literary executor & friend, Hazel Holt, tried her best to make it into a novel, & boy did she succeed. All of Pym‘s wit and sarcasm is here

Caro‘s married to Alan & they‘ve a kid. Alan works at a newer university. Alan‘s focused on his career & Caro‘s looking for something to spend all her time on

Alan‘s probably the most unlikable “nice” guy character I‘ve ever read

The Class | Erich Segal

I had an Erich Segal “phase” sometime in college (which started by reading Love Story, of course), and think this was one of the novels I read at that time. And it‘s about a bunch of college students as well, so it fits the prompt perfectly.

LiteraryinPA Oooh, I‘m remembering my Erich Segal phase too! 7mo

I heard an i/v with the author who described the true story of the brutal murder of 3 University students in a Nigerian Town as the source for thus novel. Psychologist Philip, who has recently returned from the US is asked by the father of one boy to investigate. Philip + his assistant are viewed with suspicion + he is quickly at risk while his marriage is also under strain. An interesting twist on the crime novel, well worth trying.

An interesting look at the concept of mob mentality and how people can almost be manipulated into doing someone else‘s bidding without real realising - especially when considering social conflicts that can sit deep in a community. It was different to the usual crime stories I have read previously and enjoyed the fast pace and snappy chapters. I did feel certain parts were underdeveloped. But overall a great read.
