#VirginiaBloomsberries

Here, we have our reading list for 2025. It's a good mix of her novels, short stories, esays, and biography. I'll tag them all in the comments for your perusal.

I can't wait to delve deeper into the world of Virginia Woolf. 📚📚📚

All are welcome to join us. Please let me know if you wish to be added/removed from the taglist.

A marriage is a private business, even for people who leave behind them such a vast litter of diaries, letters and third-party gossip. What occurs at its centre, what bonds maintain it, are not always visible, or even guessable, to the outsider's greedy eye. The sense that arises from this residue of words is of an abiding love, comprised in equal parts of affection and intellectual stimulation. My inviolable centre, Virginia called Leonard...

Well, November was a blur! How did you get on with our #buddyread
Modern Fiction was first published in 1919 as Modern Novels. It was later published in her collection of essays The Common Reader - Vol 1.

Did you agree with her push for a more subjective, less materialistic firm of storytelling?

TheBookHippie I find her fascinating entirely. I‘m rereading this over the weekend my mind has been MUSH… 😵‍💫😝 3w

Pickpick

I read the short essay Modern Fiction by Virginia Woolf for the #VirginiaBloomsberries - The only book of hers I‘ve read so far is Mrs. Dalloway, so I‘m looking forward to reading more of her books. This essay talks about modern writers versus the classics and how modern writers should focus on writing what they want versus what is expected of them.

I know poetry and prose are always talked about separately but to me they always feel like one. Like many #writers this also shows Woolf's work. #PoetryMatters #vision

This is an extract from this month‘s #VirginiaBloomsberries , Woolf talks about the process of writing but I think this applies to many things, where we start of with an idea but the end product is not what we had quite envisioned but somehow we still find a way to carry on.

Night and Day | Virginia Woolf

#VirginiaBloomsberries

I feel quite disappointed that I'm only just getting around to her work this late in life. Thank goodness, I've started now.
Anyway, let's talk about Night and Day?

☕️ Did you enjoy Woolf's intricate examination of romantic entanglements in 1920s London?
☕️ Did you like her characters? Does anyone stand out?
☕️ Do you think Woolf captured the changing societal times of post war England?

AnishaInkspill I read this a few years back and enjoyed parts of it but if I read this again, I would enjoy it more as there are many scenes that I can recall better than other books. Knowing little about that historical time, I can imagine the journey both Mary and Katherine are true of that time. 2mo
AllDebooks @AnishaInkspill I was completely surprised at how funny it was. Woolf sure does give good satire. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 2mo
AllDebooks I've never come across such a fickle character as William. His constant dramas were exhausting. As for backup plans, he did remind me of Austen's Mr Collins a lot! 2mo
AnishaInkspill @AllDebooks yeah, Woolf's sense of humour is a surprise, have you read her Flush: a biography? if not I won't say anything more and let you read it whenever you get a chance. 2mo

Vanessa Bell | Frances Spalding
post image

The artist Vanessa Bell is Virginia Woolf‘s sister. This is a companion catalogue to an exhibition running at MK Gallery (Milton Keynes, UK). The first time I saw Vanessa Bell‘s art I was struck by her style and how her art is painting, crafts and interior decorating. I love how this catalogue shows this. I would have liked more depth in the writing but the images of Bell‘s art make up for it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

AnishaInkspill Vanessa Bell: A World of Form and Colour by Fay Blanchard didn't appear, and so I've posted this review as a blurb.

And I have Vanessa Bell by Frances Spalding and I'm excited about reading it next year.
