During this week's section we get an "annular fusion for dummies" explanation (which I still didn't understand) by Michael Pemulis as they discuss the anxiety/paralysis of another student. What do we learn about the topic? What other annular patterns occur in this week's section?

LeahBergen That section just made me want to sympathy-pee. 😂 8y
LeahBergen We DO learn that Himself played a large role in its discovery and implementation. 8y

tstan @LeahBergen Me, too! Poor kid! Another thing that I noticed, again, in that section,(besides that science is hard) is that the American language is hard, too. This difficulty with our language seems to be pretty common, regardless of the native language of the speaker. (Orin and Lenz being examples, as well as Marathe and poor Idris). 8y
Pippitypip My understanding began back on page 502 when Jim is helping his father "fix" the squeaking bed... The curve traced by a fixed point on the circumference of a circle rolling along a continuous plane. The knob fell off his closet (when hit by a falling lamp) and rolled on its circumference and Jim thought the movement similar to what it would look like if someone tried to turn somersaults with one hand nailed to the floor. (edited) 8y
Pippitypip This was Jim's first interest in annulation. He was given a citation from the A.E.C. for his lasting contribution to the energy of waste, as Pemulis explains to Idris (while Idris squirms with the pain of needing to urinate!) The annular theory behind the type of fusion which would produce waste that is then fuel for another fusion. Toxic material is used for a fusion that produces more stable substances. (edited) 8y
Pippitypip This is why waste is flung into the Concavity on prime number days. Got it? 8y
JenP @Pippitypip I think I missed this last piece. Nice summary 8y

What's up with the infinitely unpleasant Lenz? What's the point of his sections? Does he have any redeeming qualities. What are his motivations?

AshleyHoss820 I'm not sure what's up with Lenz. His behavior is juvenile and he seems to be totally unaware of it. It's a huge red flag, the harming of animals. At this point in the book, I don't find anything very redeeming. Perhaps only the fact that maybe his drug addiction has stunted his brain development and he's simply incapable of adult/rational behavior. 🤔 Being just over halfway, we'll have to wait and see if things get better with Lenz or not. 8y
AshleyHoss820 Also...I just realized I filled out the wrong week on my Google form...😩 I'll re-send it! Sheesh, I'm a freak! 😄😂 8y
LeahBergen I'm wondering if Lenz is going to lead the Anti-ONAN Canadians and the AFR to Ennet House by fleeing there after he kills the dog? Maybe DFW is bringing all of the story lines together? 8y
See All 13 Comments
britt_brooke @LeahBergen Yes! I think this is what will happen, too. And Mario is traipsing around outside Ennet House the same night which could bring ETA into that same scene as well. Seems like some chaos is about to ensue .... but knowing DFW, it might take 300 or so pages to get to it. 8y
LeahBergen @britt_brooke Exactly! I'm kind of excited about Mario finally finding his Madame Psychosis there, too. 😀 OH!!! Umm... what was that WTF moment with The Moms and John Wayne?!?! 😳 8y
britt_brooke @LeahBergen I already forgot about that scene! The Moms needs to, um, keep her 👖on! She and Orin seem to have a lot in common even though they are pretty much estranged. 8y
JenP @britt_brooke were they actually having sex? I didn't understand what the hell was going on. 8y
LeahBergen @britt_brooke @JenP It was definitely a bizarre little football fetish scenario. And John Wayne was wearing only a jock strap?! 😳 8y
JenP @LeahBergen @britt_brooke I couldn't tell if it was a sexual thing or bizarre play-acting thing. I forgot about the naked except jock strap. 😂 8y
Currey I thought Moms and Wayne were working out some bizarre sexual fantasy, but not actually having sex....although only DFW would come up with that. And I agree that Lenz appears to be leading us to a confrontation of some sort. He really has taken on the "bad guy" mantle so we are primed to hope he gets what is coming to him, although in a DFW world who knows what that looks like 8y
JenP @Currey all the more disturbing given Orin's profession 8y
britt_brooke @JenP I don't think it blatantly said they were having sex. I just assumed so. Perhaps it was a power trip thing. (edited) 8y
Pippitypip Lens's way of dealing with his issues was just an excruciating read! 8y

This section was a little rough for me. What did you think of the section? Favorite and least favorite parts?

I'm giving everyone one more week to reach the mid-point before I pick a winner for the mug. Make sure you update your progress in the google form so I know you reached the mid-point

britt_brooke This was one of my least favorite sections so far. Lenz is just .... I don't even know what to say about him. 8y
JenP @britt_brooke completely agree. 8y
AshleyHoss820 I agree too. I liked Green, but that whole Lenz "there" business was rough. Sociopaths aren't very endearing... 8y
See All 14 Comments
AshleyHoss820 However, I loved the section where the poor, blindfolded Arslanian (I hope I spelled that right!) has to pee and Pemulis keeps yacking at him! (edited) 8y
Hooked_on_books @AshleyHoss820 Totally agree--I really enjoyed the Pemulis/blindfold scene. 8y
Hooked_on_books What frustrates me about the Lenz crap is that it's suddenly plunked down more than halfway through this book and for what? I almost threw the book across the room and would have DNF'd if that had been in the first 100 pages. 8y
JenP @Hooked_on_books I think that Wallace is exploring the myriad of dysfunctional ways in which people attempt to deal with past unhappiness/powerlessness/ lack of meaning etc. we have drug addiction, suicide, sexual addiction (Orin), overworking, obsessions, etc. I hated the section but do see it having links to what the main message might be 8y
Hooked_on_books @JenP Could be. But I also see a rather sudden use of violence that wasn't present before. The Lenz section and the AFR killing from last week were both brutal. 8y
LeahBergen I hope the "Quebecers/Nucks" catch him and mess him up! ⚜️?? 8y
LeahBergen And what is up with that Swiss hand model and Orin? 🤔 8y
JenP @LeahBergen I agree. 8y
JenP @Hooked_on_books I forgot about that scene. Yuck. I agree it's been sudden although I do think it fits the main message 8y
AshleyHoss820 I think Wallace is definitely good at exploring human behavior, especially the self-destructive kind, which can take many forms. We have Orin, who clearly resents (maybe even hates) his mother, yet seems to only enjoy affairs with mothers...Hal, who KNOWS his drug use is walking a fine line, but does so anyway. And PGOAT, who, by the very act of hiding, draws unwanted (?) attention to herself. And yeah, that AFR murder was...DESCRIPTIVE... 8y
BookwormM I want someone to sort Lenz out suspect he will get caught out especially now the meatloaf is being missed 8y

Catching up on this week's IJ section and enjoying this amazing, once-a-year, hard-to-find brew. It's dammmmnnnn good. #infinitejestbuddyread #week10 #booksandbrews

LeahBergen Nice! I just got all caught up myself. 8y
night_shift Jealous about that beer! I tried it one maybe three years ago and haven't been able to find any since :( 8y
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks Is the buddy read an ongoing thing? Will there be a new selection when Infinite Jest is over? 8y

britt_brooke @AccioAlltheBooks For this group, it's just this book, but there are a few others going on around litsy. Since IJ is so dense and long, ours is taking 4 months. It's been so good and thorough and just excellent! 8y
britt_brooke @UnidragonFrag I had never even heard of it, but hubby picked it up a couple of days ago. It's absolutely delicious. 8y
night_shift Well, props to him on the find! 😱 8y
OrangeMooseReads FOUNDERS! Woo Michigan! 8y
Rachbb3 That stout looks good. 🍺 8y
britt_brooke @UnidragonFrag He's a keeper. 😉 8y

prowlix I've never seen it here but I'm a huge fan of the regular release Breakfast Stout! Or really any Founders beer 🍻 8y
britt_brooke @OrangeMooseReads 🍺👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 8y
britt_brooke @Rachbb3 @prowlix It's so good, but 12% alcohol so I split one with hubby (it being Monday and all 😜). 8y
ChasingOm I love the #booksandbrews! Will try to remember to use it when appropriate... (edited) 8y
britt_brooke @ChasingOm Yes do!! 🍻 8y
BilboBookends Props to you for nabbin' a KBS! 8y
britt_brooke @BilboBookends Credit to the hubby for being an aggressive beer buyer! It was so good. 8y

You guys. I was looking for images to use for #week10 #picturebook and I found the best thing ever. An 11-year-old kid re-created scenes from Infinite Jest using Legos. brickjest.com #infinitejestbuddyread

Hooked_on_books While I love this, what on earth is an 11-year-old doing with knowledge of Infinite Jest?!? 8y
JenP @Hooked_on_books that was my question 😂 8y
AshleyHoss820 @Hooked_on_books @JenP I had the same question! I found an article on it and apparently the 11-year-old hasn't read the book but his Dad had and he would pick outa scene and describe it to his son and his son would build it. I haven't gone through all of the pictures, because spoilers, but I'm hoping they stuck to the less...inflammatory parts...😄😂 8y

britt_brooke Did you come across the Clipperton one? I don't know if it's the same person creating the scenes, but I found several recently and they are pretty excellent. 8y
AshleyHoss820 I think I did! 😳😳😳 They are so good! I love them! 8y
rachelm Omg this is amazing 8y
AshleyHoss820 @rachelm I thought so too! 8y
