One of my favorite chapters in this book has one of the main characters walking in the dead of night through an unfamiliar Queens neighborhood, just having escaped from danger. You can feel her adrenaline pumping as she scans her surroundings for threats, and normal night scenes are made more sinister in the process #wherethestreetshavenonames #rocktober @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Well played 😉 7y

I thought I'd try and and finally post on the thread just as the month comes to an end.
Reservoir 13 was a highlight of the booker longlist for me, so i recalled jon macgregor's excellent earlier story set in on an unnamed northern street where an incident has occurred and the reader gets to look behind the net curtains at all the lives of the individuals who live there.

saresmoore This sounds great! 7y
batsy This book and Reservoir 13 sound great. All the positive reviews of his books make it sound very intriguing. And I enjoyed this interview with him https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2017/10/18/time-marches-interview-jon-mcgreg... 7y
BarbaraBB I loved this book even better than Reservoir 13. So good! 7y
andrew61 @batsy thanks for that i will definitely look it up. 7y

American War | Omar El Akkad
post image

#Rocktober American War imagines America in 2075, where a second Civil War has occurred between North & South, and the unfortunate practices of suicide bombers is now a common day occurrence. The Chestnut family once led a quiet life in flood-ridden Louisiana, but when their father is killed the children and their mother, end up in Camp Patience — a “huge tent favela” for refugees #WhereTheStreetsHaveNoNames 😣This book should have worked but 👇🏼

Cinfhen It didn‘t for me. The author had a hard time organizing his thoughts ~ the book felt “preachy” it was more telling than showing. I‘m still interested to see what he writes next. 7y
TrishB Not felt drawn to this one. 7y
BarbaraBB I had this book stacked but when you say it is preachy... 7y

Cinfhen I felt like the author had an underlying message, which just irked me...maybe "preachy" is the wrong word @BarbaraBB I say read it and decide how u feel, it's a rather short book 7y
Cathythoughts I haven‘t heard of this book. But I think your connection between the #streetshavenoname & refugee camps is particularly powerful 👍this is really good. Powerful images too (edited) 7y
Izai.Amorim I sometimes wonder (and worry) about this fixation with dystopian reality so widespread in US literature and movies. What‘s the underlying (unconscious) desire feeding this? I 7y
Cinfhen Thanks so much @Cathythoughts 🙏🏻I know seeing those endless rows of tents is so heartwrenching 7y
Cinfhen Excellent observation @Izai.Amorim I would like to know as well. The author is a journalist so he's seen terrible things and I understand this is probably meant to be a wake up call 7y
AmyG I find dystopian lit fascinating. But I don't read too often because they kind of scare me. Especially in these times. I have this on my TBR. 7y
Ms_T Great choice 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7y
Reviewsbylola This may be the most disappointing book for me of 2017. 7y
emilyhaldi I've picked this up and put it down twice now after a couple of pages 😬 I definitely have some preconceived notions after seeing these reviews on litsy and I just need to move through them and give it a try!! Soon! @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola 7y
Cinfhen I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts @emilyhaldi @AmyG Did you read this one yet @Ms_T ? 7y
Ms_T @Cinfhen I haven‘t but it‘s been on my radar for ages 😃 7y
Reviewsbylola You may like it. It‘s hard to tell. I just felt like there was so much potential with the story and it felt like he did nothing with it. @emilyhaldi 7y
Cinfhen I agree @Reviewsbylola the story was really stuck in his head, it didn‘t seem to play out well on paper but the potential was there. Hope you get to it @Ms_T 7y
DebinHawaii I listened to the audiobook and found it interesting--hard to say enjoyable with the subject matter. I don't know if I would have felt differently if I had read the print copy. I think for me audiobooks skim the surface a bit more and I tend to analyze them less than when I read a book. 7y
Cinfhen That‘s a good point @DebinHawaii I can‘t really pay full attention to my audio books...my mind does wonder since I‘m usually doing something else 7y
