One of my favorite reads so far this year. Beautiful, heart breaking, and honest portrayal of complicated and flawed family relationships. Very much a 5 star read for me!

Three stars for the setting, but the characters and plot were a miss for me. And the ending was a big eye roll.

Like it‘s West Texas setting, this is a gritty debut novel of survival, courage and how women support each other. The descriptions of Odessa are completely vivid and like another character in the book. The audiobook narration was really good and kept me engaged enough that I finished it quickly.

Completely enjoyed this book and will be recommending it to others. The narration of the audio book is excellent!

So many great choices for January BOTM! Really wanted them all, but this was my final selection.

This was a good one to listen to while cleaning. Some parts I probably would have connected with better if I was younger (20s-30s) but overall it made me pause and consider my relationship with spending.

About half way through and it is already one of my top three reads this year!

Augustdana It‘s on my holds at the library. I‘ve heard nothing but good things. Can‘t wait. 4y
AmyL @Augustdana I‘m on the last story and had to put it down because it is just so good that I need to find someone to talk to about it! I‘m not a huge short story reader but OMG she is teaching a Master‘s class with this book! Highly, highly recommend!!! 4y

Current audio book ... already nervous because I know it‘s going to get really, really bad for the main character. The Underground Railroad was one of the most impactful books I read this year and feel like this is going to be hard to shake too.

Best fiction book list for 2020 from I love libraries...what were your favorites? I‘ve only read three, with Transcendent Kingdom as my fav...A Burning is on my TBR pile.

AmyL Parakeet & The Vanishing Half were cut off .. I‘m still learning how to post 😂 4y
Deblovestoread Haven‘t read even one on this list....but have 5 on my TBR. Transcendent, Deacon, Apeirogon, Hamnet and Jack. It‘s been that kind of year. 4y

The Mothers: A Novel | Brit Bennett

Picked this one up after loving The Vanishing Half (and being drawn in by the cover!) I didn‘t read any reviews so I guess I assumed something totally different from the title. I kept thinking this just wasn‘t the book I wanted. Putting that aside, I did find the story and characters interesting and appreciated the complexity and reality of the relationships.

Ruthiella I‘m the opposite.😀 I loved The Mothers but wasn‘t as wowed by The Vanishing Half. 4y
AmyL @Ruthiella I really think I would have liked it better if I had read a summary first ... I just was expecting something totally different and had a hard time moving past that! 4y
rachaich It was very readable. I wamtvto read The Vanishing Half now 😊 4y

Uncomfortable, raw and fascinating- I could not put this one down. Some sentences left me breathless and I had to reread them several times because they were just that good.
