I don't really know how to feel about this book...it's very short and easy to read, but I don't understand why it won a Booker Prize back in 1984. It's just "okay" for me and far from "amazing."

After more than 10 years and two failed attempts, I finally finished this novel! It was worth the struggle to read through all the philosophical and theological discussions despite the slightly disappointing ending.

"I am as I am and so I will be
But how that I am, none knoweth truly
Be it evil, be it well, be I bound, be I free,
I am as I am and so I will be...
But how that is I leave to you
Judge as ye list, false or true
Ye know no more than afore ye knew
Yet I am as I am, whatever ensue."

The tragic end to the Thomas Cromwell trilogy, but witty, funny, and entertaining til the last page.

From the author of The Vegetarian, Human Acts tells the story of the 1980 Gwangju Uprising in S. Korea from the point of view of different individuals involved as well as the inhumane suffering they experienced at the hands of the military. Worth a read despite its heavy theme (which won't help you much these days) and more socially significant and relatable than The Vegetarian.

Nothing like a book about books get you in the mood to read....

WanderingBookaneer I loved the first book. It was so great that I was disappointed by books 2 and 3. Book 4, however, tied everything together masterfully. 5y
Hidie @WanderingBookaneer Hi! Yes, I really liked Shadow of the Wind but I read it ages ago and don't remember much about it except that I enjoyed it. I haven't read the others but I have them all. After this I'm planning to read Labyrinth of Spirits. 5y

I'm looking to join a cool online book club for book recs and also to discuss books...any ideas and suggestions? Thanks in advance!

britt_brooke I get tons of rec just from cruising Litsy. 😆 Have you joined any of the buddy reads on here? They are kind of like a book club, but just for a book at a time. A good example of a recurring one is @LitsyBuddyRead hosted by the lovely @Jess7 (edited) 6y
Hidie Thanks! I haven't yet joined a buddy read on here, but it's something I'd like to try if I like the chosen book. 6y

I wanted to read this after learning that it has a Netflix adaptation. I didn't realize it was an epistolary novel until I started reading. I'm not too fond of epistolary novels, and this one is a bit bland, so I don't know if I'm gonna see it through...
