Authority: A Novel | Jeff VanderMeer
After thirty years, the only human engagement with Area Xa seemingly malevolent landscape surrounded by an invisible border and mysteriously wiped clean of all signs of civilizationhas been a series of expeditions overseen by a government agency so secret it has almost been forgotten: the Southern Reach. Following the tumultuous twelfth expedition chronicled in Annihilation, the agency is in complete disarray. John Rodrigues (aka "Control") is the Southern Reach's newly appointed head. Working with a distrustful but desperate team, a series of frustrating interrogations, a cache of hidden notes, and hours of profoundly troubling video footage, Control begins to penetrate the secrets of Area X. But with each discovery he must confront disturbing truths about himself and the agency he's pledged to serve. In Authority, the second volume of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, Area X's most disturbing questions are answered . . . but the answers are far from reassuring.

This book dangled a carrot right out of my reach most of the time. I‘m glad it was longer than the first one, and BOY was it good…but it rly didn‘t answer much and left me with thousands more questions. Some moments were gasp worthy, and overall it was captivating, but it was also frustrating bc I JUST WANNA KNOW THINGS. I‘m looking forward to the next one in the series. I‘m excited but half expecting to be a bit let down at this point 😬

Vansa You know, I honestly felt that this book in the trilogy was written just because it had to be a trilogy. It seemed to mostly consist of office politics otherwise! 13mo
Nalbuque Yes! I kept waiting for something to happen but it was mostly backstory abt a new, unrelated character… I wanted more area X! And the bits where they actually mention the director and other known characters were so confusing! I wondered if that was on purpose, to make the reader feel lost, yknow, for ambiance 13mo

I did actually finish my #BookSpin book last week and forgot to post it. This one was meh. I liked Annihilation but this one was kind of boring. I will read the next one because I have to know how it all ends.

When it comes to volume two of the trilogy, I prefer the English spoken audio book. It has a lot more atmosphere than the German print version. Here it shows what an impact a good audio book reader can have.

Of course the book itself is still a pick. Especially since I know, that the original has more vibe than the translation. I still enjoyed meeting Control again and getting to know him all over again.

This second in Jeff VanderMeer‘s Area X trilogy is just as unsettling as the first, though its narrator and perspective couldn‘t be more different. Following a man named Control, the new director of the Southern Reach, Authority is much more organizational in focus. At times it did drag a little as Control kept grasping for ever more elusive answers but I for one enjoy the journey to and through Area X, mysteries abounding and answers be damned.

Finally starting book 2 of the Southern Reach trilogy. Annihilation was such a trip for me that it stuck around for a while after I had finished and I even had unsettling dreams about “the tower”. I‘m hoping the second book has the same effect, it has mixed reviews so we will see 👀

Book two in Vandermeer's "Southern Reach" trilogy, following "Annihilation." Following the events of the first book, a new director comes to the offices overseeing expeditions to Area X. He meets resistance from the staff, abuse from his superiors, strange gifts left by the last director, and more questions than answers. It's a different sort of weird than the first book, as much Kafka as Weird Tales, but still absorbing and unsettling.

Book Number 16 on my #BookSpinBonanza list

I was very excited about this book and Jeff VanderMerr didn't disappoint. Interestingly, the second book works from a totally different point of view than the first one. And that makes it even better!

What I loved was how the author managed to smuggle humour in his writing. The whole book is filled with suspense, but still Control made me laugh!

Control has been transferred to head the Department of the South Reach after the mysterious disappearance of the last director, just after the expedition from the last book return with no memories, no results, and no psychologist.

Basically, the bureaucratic side of the prismatic acid trip of the first book in this series. So, slower and more methodical. Still tense and weird. But a little disappointing from what I was expecting. 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

Wow this book did not disappoint. I heard mixed reviews about the 2nd book so I went in not sure if I would like it. I freaking love it ❤️ I would say more but I‘m about to start the 3rd book and there‘s no time. I love Control and his cat Chorizo or Chorry and the suspense building throughout the entire book. And the cliff hanger at the end oh man, it‘s brilliant simply brilliant 😊 Ella is my reading pal today and I‘m starting book 3 now 😊

A disappointing sequel to such a great first novel in a trilogy. Boring and unimportant to the trilogy as a whole. I struggled with this one.

Nearly done with Authority and - still loving it. Still being plagued and tormented by it, and the painful humanity of Control, and the writing, the luscious, sharp, terrifyingly imaginative writing of this story. I will miss his voice; I will miss the little human things peppering this deeply inhuman (or in love with the inhuman) world, the cat Chorizo and the carved chess pieces. I will miss Control's messiness, so much like mine own.

As uncanny as it is well-written, much like Annihilation - though I am probably liking Control more than our awkward intriguing biologist. This book haunts me even when I'm not reading it. I won't have it any other way.

Book 2 of the Southern Reach Trilogy is SO different from Book 1. And not in a good way.

The writing style, the main character, the overly detailed descriptions 😫 ...it‘s dragging. I just want a continuation of Book 1 (which was fantastic) not a whole new character with an entirely new (and quite dull) backstory.

Littens who have read this series, please tell me it‘s worth it when I get to Book 3!

Elma I felt the same way about this book. For me personally the ending wasn't worth it. I kept hoping the end would be so good that slogging through book 2 and 3 would be worth it, but it just wasn't. I know a lot of people loved them though. 5y

Part two of the Southern Reach Trilogy follows a man who calls himself Control. He is sent into Southern Reach to make a sense out of the mess there. While he tries to figure everything out he also questions the biologist we met in book one. Nothing much happens for most of the book, it is interesting but not as enthralling as book one. Only during the last 80ish pages he gets closer to understanding and all of a sudden A LOT happens. 3/5 ⭐️

I really enjoyed “Annihilation” & the world that the author created. Nothing is spoon-fed to the reader & certain events are left ambiguous & open to interpretation.

I‘m interested in seeing where the story goes from here. I‘m not expecting answers.
