Moriarty | Anthony Horowitz
Sherlock Holmes is dead. Days after Holmes and his arch-enemy Moriarty fall to their doom at the Reichenbach Falls, Pinkerton agent Frederick Chase arrives in Europe from New York. The death of Moriarty has created a poisonous vacuum which has been swiftly filled by a fiendish new criminal mastermind who has risen to take his place. Ably assisted by Inspector Athelney Jones of Scotland Yard, a devoted student of Holmes's methods of investigation and deduction, Frederick Chase must forge a path through the darkest corners of the capital to shine light on this shadowy figure, a man much feared but seldom seen, a man determined to engulf London in a tide of murder and menace. Author of the global bestseller THE HOUSE OF SILK, Anthony Horowitz once more breathes life into the world created by Arthur Conan Doyle. With pitch-perfect characterisation and breath-taking pace, Horowitz weaves a relentlessly thrilling tale which teases and delights by the turn of each page. The game is afoot...

#7Days7Covers Day 2. And here we have the one and only book I have ever physically THROWN across the room, it made me so ANGRY. Luckily, the sturdy hardcover survived the fall. I can't say the same for poor Holmes and Moriarty, in the blood red Reichenbach illustration underneath the dust jacket. Or can I?? #happyMonday

I liked the concept more than the execution. The writing didn‘t draw you in. It was obvious it was building up to a dramatic ending but it took forever to get there and once it dead I felt like even that was clumsy, heavy handed, and way too long. It was vaguely entertaining.

I rated this #audiobook “so-so” because I found after a while that I didn‘t really care how it turned out. Though the text was well-crafted and even a bit old-fashioned to match the Conan Doyle stories, I didn‘t feel drawn in to the story. I kept listening because I‘d read in other reviews that the ending was exciting. And yes, there was certainly a powerful twist at the end. The author did indeed take me by surprise!

Not my cup of tea. I‘m not a big fan of retellings or reimagining with classic characters. And this book is no exception. This book didn‘t even remotely live up to the original. It‘s simply too hard to do better than Sir Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes.

Despite the fact its already 81 at 9:30 am and the high today will be 95 (probably over 100 with the heat index), I am indulging in my first PSL if the season & dreaming of crisp fall days. #heatwave #autumndreams #pumpkinspice #morningbreak

CoffeeK8 I love PSL but I don‘t think I can drink one in August... but in 2 days, it‘ll be PSL all day long! 1y
wanderinglynn @CoffeeK8 I almost didn‘t order one because #heatwave —but it was too tempting to pass up! 🎃 Besides, since Christmas now starts in October, it‘s only fair that autumn/Halloween start in August. 😂 1y

I'm looking to join a cool online book club for book recs and also to discuss books...any ideas and suggestions? Thanks in advance!

britt_brooke I get tons of rec just from cruising Litsy. 😆 Have you joined any of the buddy reads on here? They are kind of like a book club, but just for a book at a time. A good example of a recurring one is @LitsyBuddyRead hosted by the lovely @Jess7 (edited) 1y

This was a great read! I have enjoyed both of Horowitz‘s books about the Sherlock Holmes characters. I liked that this one was centered around Moriarty but still had the Holmes feel to it. For some reason Lucy didn‘t want her picture taken and hid her face. 😹

[March08] The picture (taken from Pinterest) says it all why #Moriarty is a #LikableVillain. He's the only one who is as smart as Sherlock if not smarter, since Doyle initially created him to kill off Sherlock.

"Every fairytale needs a good old-fashioned villain. You need me, or you're nothing." - Moriarty to Sherlock

batsy Andrew Scott did the character so well, I thought! That slippery creepy factor, and the showy drama. 2y

If you love anything Sherlock, get it ...
If you loved Magpie Murders, get it ...
If you love mysteries, cozy or otherwise, get it ...
If all the above apply, definitely get it ...
If none of the above apply, get it anyway!

I‘m making this a pick and I did give it 4 stars on Goodreads but, honestly, it‘s really more of an in-between sort of book. I had a hard time getting into it and the last quarter was the best part. It lined up nicely with The Final Problem. It has a nice little twist, even though one bit made me sad. #Sherlocked, but by Moriarty this time.

Andrew65 I loved The House of Silk but not read Moriarty yet. 2y
jpmcwisemorgan @Andrew65 I haven‘t read The House of Silk yet! I‘m not even sure how I ended up with Moriarty. 2y
Andrew65 @jpmcwisemorgan I do recommend it! I keep putting it off and then when I read it kept asking myself why I did that. I have seen more positive reviews for A House of Silk than Moriarty. 2y

DGRachel @andrew65 I listened to House of Silk and loved it, but had trouble getting into Moriarty. I may have to try again in print. 2y
jpmcwisemorgan @Andrew65 & @Sarah83 Some books just don‘t work for some people, and sometimes it‘s a matter of timing or mood. @DGRachel I don‘t do as many fiction books as audio but I‘ve found that the narrator plays a big role in whether or not I like the book regardless of type. 2y
Sarah83 @Andrew65 so everyone reads the book,he or she wants to read. 😏 As you said, sometimes the timing is just bad @jpmcwisemorgan 2y
Andrew65 @jpmcwisemorgan @Sarah83 I agree timing and mood can play a big part, and so can the narrator of audiobooks and whether you take to them. 2y

Attention Canadian friends! My Dollarama has a ton of Crowned Moriarty Funko Pop!s for $4 each. I didn't get one because I'm not a SHERLOCK fan, but if you are and you've always dreamed of owning a tiny, jewel-laden Moriarty with a big head, you should see if your local Dollarama has the same stock.

They also had Selina Kyle from GOTHAM. She was cute.

I mostly saw the plot points of the mystery coming, but there was a good, juicy twist at the end. I listened to this one, and the narrator's American accent was not so good, so maybe eyes-on would have been a better choice.

#ReadJanuary #bestof I read most of my January tbr. I did the Sherlock challenge- read 4 books and listened to one ( A Study in Scarlet) for that challenge.
Also read:
1 mystery
1 historical fiction
2 classics (Sense and Sensibility/Heidi )
1 graphic novel
1 non-fiction ( Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck- audible)
Grand total- 11
My favorites were Moriarty and Passenger to Frankfurt both were suspenseful and surprising.
Not a bad start for 2017

A Sherlock Holmes mystery without Sherlock or Watson? Inspector Athelney Jones of Scotland Yard and Frederick Chase do their best Holmes and Watson impression after Holmes and Moriarty go over the Reichenbach Falls. What we get is a fun mystery with some not entirely unanticipated twists.

Cozy Saturday morning reading. This is the sequel to House of Silk. It's decent, but I'm a bit disappointed as Holmes & Watson aren't in it--it follows Inspector Jones and an American detective as they try to break up a small part of Moriarty's ring after Reichenbach. (Of course, they believe Holmes to be dead). This is my one read for #SHreads17

Better than The House of Silk (which was very good) - I felt uneasy the entire time I was reading. Horowitz does a brilliant job of creating a sense of menace, while at the same time never establishing exactly where it is coming from. The best Sherlock Holmes pastiche I have read in a long time.

It's impossible to resist a Sherlock Holmes pastiche - and if Moriarty is even a fraction as good as The House of Silk I'll be happy! #Elementary #mystery #Sherlock (Side note: recently discovered Horowitz wrote early episodes of British detective drama Midsomer Murders, which is absolutely addictive).

I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, and I've been seeing this book on Amazon and other places and needed to read it. At 285 pages, it's fairly short, and I finished it in two days. A great pastiche of Doyle's original storyline, and a twist at the end that even the most observant won't get! Read it!
