I'm really happy with where my year is going to end, but one of my students challenged me to reach 120. That's a tough order, guys!

Literary_Siren Only 15 to go! I had a lot of changes in my life this year and have only read 77.5 books (one in progress) out of my goal of 110. Which is normally a low goal for me. 6h
TiredLibrarian Great job! You might be able to hit 120 with some novellas or shorter reads... 📚😊 5h

I liked picking up w/Thursday as she deals w/the aftermath of The Eyre Affair. Her wry way of dealing w/fame really amuses me. But I didn't sympathize w/her at all when she loses Landen, b/c I just don't care about him. It was delightful to watch her go off on her own adventures. But as the story continued, it started to lose steam. So yes, I liked it & will continue the series. It just had a lot going on.

This was a fun little mystery to zip through. Even now I recognized how much I would've enjoyed this book as a kid. As an adult, there were a bunch of things I appreciate more now than I would have then (though some parts haven't aged well). Also, this is exactly how I love mysteries: fast-paced, unreliable characters, & all the clues at my disposal. There were some parts I didn't guess, and others that I did, but the book played fair throughout.

Some recent reading sneaks: On the right I was reading Funny in Farsi yesterday while waiting to exchange a purchase at the mall (thus the odd angle; didn't want to annoy the grumpy people in line behind me!). On the left, I'm reading The Afterlife of Holly Chase while @Ruri_kaichou tries to fix a podcast sound problem (which ended up, of course, being my fault).

This book is still so good. I haven't read it in years, but I remember devouring it the first time. This time I was struck by how much there actually is to it, and I took my time. It's interesting seeing which parts of our narrator I still identify with and which parts I don't, as well as which parts of the story are still suspenseful and which parts aren't. Glad I revisited this one.

rubyslippersreads I need to reread this favorite. 2d

This book was adorable. So adorable. I expect nothing less from Rainbow Rowell, but somehow she surpasses my expectations each time! Deja & Josiah are the cutest characters & sweetest friends. The whole book is a love letter to fall & pumpkin patches & appreciating the time you have w/the people you care about - all of which are my favorite things! Add charming art, hilarious background jokes, & an endless stream of puns! Who wouldn't love that?

This book almost feels like 2 separate stories. In the 1st part, I found myself tiring easily, but later the book began moving faster for me b/c it became more character oriented. Still not a lot happens & the characters, despite being interesting, make frustrating choices. I found myself really interested by the ideas of the mythology & frustrated that I wasn't getting a clearer picture of it all. Still considering the next volume.

This book made perfect sense after the unfortunate events in the previous book. And to be honest, I loved the idea of seeing Constance & yes, even Norma & Fleurette, take charge of a ladies' Army camp. But most of the book actually seemed more concerned w/Beulah Binford. While she is really interesting, it felt like I was reading 2 separate books at once, which was hard, but it came together at the end. I really hope that the series continues!

I continue to love Constance Kopp. Her passion for saving people really connected for me & it made me happy by revealing how much she's grown & the support system of determined women she's developed. Surprisingly, I also really enjoyed Fleurette. Norma remains the thorn in my side, but she started grew on me at the end. I admit, this didn't leave me w/the usual Kopp sisters feeling of delight, but I know you can't keep those Kopps down for long.

Okay, guys, I need input! I'm trying to figure out how to prioritize these that I've been dying to read over the next couple of months. Particularly since I'm up next to choose for the #EclecticReaders book club!
What are your recs? What do I read first? Or if you read along with us, what do you want to read?

Hazel2019 Starless Sea!!! 3w
Jess_Read_This This might be an unpopular opinion, but I‘d move Doors to the bottom of priority. I found it really didn‘t live up to the hype for me. But I know others have been raving on Goodreads about it. 3w
Jerdencon I loved in the woods! 3w
See All 17 Comments
jmtrivera @Jess_Read_This Ooh, good to know. I like a good counter-opinion too. Helps to not overhype things. 3w
Jess_Read_This @jmtrivera I was bummed when I finished because on paper it really ticked off plot line boxes I would enjoy. I‘m curious though when you do read it, what you think! 3w
jmtrivera @Hazel2019 I'm so excited about this one. Have you read it yet? 3w
jmtrivera @Jerdencon I hear only good thongs, and we haven't read a mystery in a bit. And I love mysteries! 3w
jmtrivera @Jess_Read_This Yeah, it looks exactly like it's up my alley too! I'll have to keep you updated! 3w
Hazel2019 @jmtrivera I haven‘t read the Starless Sea yet but heard great things about it. Definitely on my 2020 TBR! 😁 3w
Amandajoy The Starless Sea is on my TBR, and I‘m hoping to get to it here soon. I‘d vote for that one. 3w
jmtrivera @Hazel2019 @Amandajoy It's been on my TBR too! Your votes are noted! 3w
Merethebookgal Ninth House and Starless Sea are on my immediate TBR, but I‘m surprised Ninth House is something you‘d want to read since it‘s supposed to be extremely dark with trigger warnings of murder, rape (of a child, I think), gore, etc. 3w
jmtrivera @Merethebookgal I'd heard about the murder, but I've read enough murder mysteries that it didn't put me off. I hadn't heard that it was an assault of a child though (just that there was a sexual assault), and that does usually push my buttons. Thanks for the head's up. 3w
meagankc21 Damn that's a good batch of choices. I haven't read any but I've heard good things about most. Sorry I can't help lol 3w
jmtrivera @meagankc21 Anything you'd vote for moving up the list? 3w
meagankc21 @jmtrivera if I had to choose I'd say ninth house Leigh bardugo 3w

This seemed a logical continuation of the sisters' story. As Constance continues to embrace her job, it's natural she'd become preoccupied w/the cases of young women looking for non-traditional lives. It's just as natural that Fleurette would seek a life on stage. Everything flowed so well that I found myself turning page after page. And the varied storylines allowed for a lot of introspection, as well as humor while jumping back & forth.

jmtrivera @ljuliel The 8 seen here. I have one to the Library of Congress too, but as I'm not planning any major academic research any time soon, he just sleeps in my wallet. 😂 2mo
ljuliel Are all of these online ecards only or do you visit the libraries in person ? I‘ve been to lots of libraries in our area, but most are in one or the other system, I guess you‘d call it. So you can use the same card at several dozen libraries throughout the state. I have one ( ecard) one from another state , but find that most states say you have to live in their state or county to get a free card. I‘ve never tried any of the online payable cards. 2mo
jmtrivera @ljuliel I've visited most of these libraries in person at one point or another, but I typically stick to the one closest to me for regular patronage. We have a lot of counties close together in the DC/Northern VA area, which is why they allow people to obtain cards across county lines. It's super useful for checking out ebooks! 2mo

I gathered such momentum reading the first that I had to go straight into the second, and I'm glad I did. This book has less of the constant cliffhangers & suspense; that said, in some ways, it was more satisfying. The slower pace allows the characters to ask questions like, how do you come back from being broken? I loved pondering esp. w/these characters: all strong, intelligent, talented young women who have been hurt badly in different ways.

Nitpickyabouttrains I think I liked the second one more too 2mo

Once I started digging into this book, it became impossible to put down. The authors created amazing characters who are both awful & incredibly sympathetic. The suspense builds & builds until the reader is practically itchy w/anticipation of the next terrible thing to happen. And I loved how it still surprised me into gasping when it happened. Honestly, this book would've been perfect for live-tweeting. I finished it & immediately began the next.

I found it a quick-paced invasion story. Clover's ways of dealing with trauma, as well as her logical & quick-witted thinking, felt real. I also enjoyed the other characters & their relationships. On the other hand, some pieces of the story didn't make sense. And I would definitely take the content warming seriously. Still, it was a quick read & I'm always glad to read more Latin American authors' voices. I'd be willing to pick up book 2.

So glad I picked up the 2nd part of this duology right away. It was a good conclusion to what the first started. While it picks up where the first left off, it still starts a bit slowly. At the same time, the characters build both their own goals & their relationships with each other really well. Banghart also does a good job of clarifying those goals as the characters continue. It was a fun read, and I could definitely see myself revisiting this.

I've never played the games & know nearly nothing about the book series, so I was pleasantly surprised by this story collection. I liked it more than expected. I always enjoy fairy tale retellings, even if these get a bit dark sometimes. I didn't love all of it; for example, I thought the eponymous story was a bit longer than necessary. Others were quite enjoyable. I'm probably not coming back to the series anytime soon, but it was a fun visit.
