From Ruth Ware, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, The Lying Game, The Death of Mrs. Westaway, and The Turn of the Key, comes her highly anticipated sixth novel. Getting snowed in at a mountain chalet doesnt sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when theres a breathtaking vista, a cozy fire, and company to keep you warm. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers...none of whom you can trust. When an off-site company retreat meant to promote mindfulness and collaboration goes utterly wrong with the arrival of a monster storm, the corporate food chain becomes irrelevant and survival trumps synergy. Come Monday morning, how many members short will the team be?

Yesterday‘s op shop purchases. The topical print skirt is way too big but I‘ll make something else with it as I love the material. Grand total 🟰 $44. The lady behind the counter warned me that they are getting rid of their loyalty cards. The 5th purchase over $10 gets 50% off clothing up to 10 items. Not for items that cost over $30 though. Guess who is going shopping at Salvos after ballet on Saturday. Like I need an excuse!

3.5❄️⛷️Coworkers developing a music App go on a ski trip & when one doesn't return from the slopes, suspicions arise. Then an avalanche traps them in the chalet. A few murders occur, making for a claustrophobic thriller. This is told from 2 points of view. I was bored at first w/ all of the hipster corp business talk & the characters weren't always likeable, but once the mystery begins & the threat of freezing temps increases,I couldn't put it down

I liked this one. I was in the mood for a wintery read, and this hit the spot. I enjoyed the setting and the pacing was fast. Although it was predictable in parts, it had some satisfying bits as well.

This was a reread for me. I read it when it first came out and I think I was underwhelmed at the time. Listening to it on audiobook and already knowing “whodunnit” made it more interesting this time, if that makes any sense. The one thing I didn‘t miss is the posh, entitled techies who think they deserve the sky and moon. Anyway, give it a read. I think you‘ll like it. 😊

The cofounder of a London-based tech start-up organizes a weeklong trip in the French Alps. It begins as a corporate retreat, but as one shareholder pushes a lucrative buyout offer, tensions simmer and loyalties are tested. An avalanche leaves the group cut off from all access to the outside world. As each hour passes without any sign of rescue, panic mounts, the chalet grows colder, and the group dwindles further…one by one.

Third time‘s the charm with me and Ruth Ware since I finally enjoyed one of her books. 😂 This obviously plays homage to Agatha Christie and it mostly works. A “locked room” mystery involving a group on a corporate retreat in the mountains, Ware captures the tension of isolation and distrust well. I loved the setting. Nothing mind-blowing here, but I DEFINITELY will not be traveling to a remote location with my co-workers anytime soon. 😜 3.5⭐️

It is pretty good. I figured it out way too early and there is way too much wrap up for me. Felt like the last 30% was a slog, but it was great fun before that.

Set in a Swiss chalet, this tense, gripping thriller takes a page from Agatha Christie as ski resort guests meet untimely ends one after another. Alternating perspectives show the events as seen by Liz, an outsider among the posh group of tech execs from music app Snoop, and Erin, a host employed at the resort. An avalanche contributes to the chilly atmosphere as suspicion shifts from one guest to another; an ice cold read for a hot summer day.

Finally finished this one! Not my favorite Ruth Ware book, but certainly not my least favorite either. It was such a struggle to get into it though. It wasn't until about halfway through that this one really picked up, but I wasn't going to give up since this was the last book left to get myself up to date on all of her books released so far. It was worth it in the end but still probably only about a 3.5 ⭐ read.

I liked this one. There‘s 1 plot device that annoyed me but it‘s common in the thriller genre so I won‘t hold it against it. It was entertaining & the action toward the end was intense. The “snoopscribers” got annoying on audio but it‘s a small complaint haha #authoramonth

Overall this was a good story, but progressed so slowly through much of the book before eventually an explosive end. Not my favourite Ruth Ware book but many elements of it were still enjoyable.

Sixth book finished for April‘s #AuthorAMonth, fourth book for #BacklistReadathon

@Clwojick @TheAromaOfBooks @Soubhiville

Clwojick Agreed. I find her books a little bit or miss for me. I‘m not normally one for low burn mysteries, and would rather the suspense start early on. 2y
Andrew65 @Clwojick I‘d agree totally. A very slow build in the first half —> two/thirds of the book, then suddenly an injection of tension and pace in the last part of the book. In one or two books it was a struggle to get to that point. I like my books in this genre to have more pace and dialogue from the get go. Felt In a Dark Dark Wood was the closest to this. (edited) 2y
TheAromaofBooks I was also unreasonably annoyed with the little subheading under EVERY chapter telling how many followers/listeners/etc the narrator had... considering the power was out for almost the entire story was it was just zero zero zero all the time 😂 2y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks Yes after the first few occasions that was totally pointless 🤷‍♂️ 2y
5feet.of.fury @TheAromaofBooks agree the “snoopscribers” “offline” was annoying lol I know it wouldn‘t have bothered be if I didn‘t audiobook it but it added very little. 2y

Kind of at a weird stage in my current art project. I‘m making some flowers inspired by Beetlejuice for my friend who bought us tickets for the musical. I have a vision. I hope it come together.

This book is good so far. I‘m at 45%. It is set up like the Hunting Party by Lucy Foley. I am yelling outloud at the characters here but the pacing is good. lol

I‘m giving this a low pick, but I think I have decided I‘m not a Ware fan. Even though this had many things I love like a group of people stuck in a secluded spot, death and dangerous cold weather, it was just okay. Also, it was too long IMO. At one point, I was wondering how I could have nearly three hours left. #aam #authoramonth

The short story was just okay too.

Cinfhen Yup! I‘m done with her too 🤪 2y
Reggie Lolol that last sentence. I‘m usually the opposite. How can we have 10 pages left when there‘s so much to wrap up!!! 2y
Bookzombie @Reggie I was wondering if there was an author interview at the end. Lol. I think Ware probably needs an editor willing to tighten things up a bit. The so few pages at the end is also worrisome though. 2y

I'm trying, I'm really trying... I don't know why I keep reading Ruth Ware. Every time I finish one of her books I just feel.. meh. Yet, I continue to keep reading every book she writes, so clearly I don't hate them. In fairness, they're quick, easy reads and generally entertaining. They just tend to be a tad predictable. Honestly though, I am struggling to get into this one. Please tell me, does it pick up at some point? Because really 🥱

A corporate retreat goes wrong after an avalanche traps them in a ski chalet in Switzerland. This starts out slow but picks up the pace from the middle-ish onward. I wasn't blown away by this book, the only Ruth Ware I've read, but it was readable. I did figure out early on who the killer was & how things would end up. It felt a bit formulaic. A so-so pick for me. I'm not likely to pick up any other Ware titles.

So I figured out who the killer was right away. But I was really enjoying the first half of this book because I thought no way it would be this obvious. So I was looking at every clue in this book and trying to prove myself wrong. Alas, I was not. Really disappointed in that. I kept trying to disprove myself tho because I didn't think the person was a very good character to be there killer. As always with Ruth Ware, the book was just too long 3/5

Final read of 2022, finished with about 45 minutes to spare.

While bummed that unseasonably mild temperatures have undermined my original reasoning for reading this snowed-in thriller in winter, I am glad that I was at least still right about Ruth Ware being reliable.

She‘s become a go-to for me; even when I call a “twist” early, it never prevents me from enjoying the rest of the book. Not something I can say about many authors in the genre.

My favourite girl helped me finish ONE BY ONE while I cleaned the house—and by “helped,” I mean, “shed lots of hair for me to vacuum up.”

This was my second Ruth Ware, after THE TURN OF THE KEY, and I enjoyed it a lot despite a couple of weird pacing things. It got me wondering if she uses a basic formula for her books, though. I‘ll say a bit more about that in the comments, since it kind of gives the game away.

xicanti So, do all Ware‘s books explore famous stories and crime tropes from contemporary angles? THE TURN OF THE KEY was a take on THE TURN OF THE SCREW, with tech, and ONE BY ONE was THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD wrapped up in AND THEN THERE WERE NONE, with tech. 3y
