The Salmon of Doubt
The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time | Douglas Adams
On Friday, May 11, 2001, the world mourned the untimely passing of Douglas Adams, beloved creator of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, dead of a heart attack at age forty-nine. Thankfully, in addition to a magnificent literary legacywhich includes seven novels and three co-authored works of nonfictionDouglas left us something more. The book you are about to enjoy was rescued from his four computers, culled from an archive of chapters from his long-awaited novel-in-progress, as well as his short stories, speeches, articles, interviews, and letters. In a way that none of his previous books could, The Salmon of Doubt provides the full, dazzling, laugh-out-loud experience of a journey through the galaxy as perceived by Douglas Adams. From a boys first love letter (to his favorite science fiction magazine) to the distinction of possessing a nose of heroic proportions; from climbing Kilimanjaro in a rhino costume to explaining why Americans cant make a decent cup of tea; from lyrical tributes to the sublime pleasures found in music by Procol Harum, the Beatles, and Bach to the follies of his hopeless infatuation with technology; from fantastic, fictional forays into the private life of Genghis Khan to extended visits with Dirk Gently and Zaphod Beeblebrox: this is the vista from the elevated perch of one of the tallest, funniest, most brilliant, and most penetrating social critics and thinkers of our time. Welcome to the wonderful mind of Douglas Adams. From the Hardcover edition.

Sadly, Salmon Of Doubt was never completed 😢 It would've made such an awesome book. Dirk Gently is such a cool character and I would've loved to read what Douglas Adams would've made out of this idea (where's the other half of the cat? 🤔) The book includes different by and about DA. Done didn't interest me that much, but many were hilarious. Just DA being DA.

SamAnne Hmmm I need check this out! 8mo
Jari-chan @SamAnne If you like Douglas Adams I can recommend it. It's a good collection, but mostly targeted at fans of the author. 8mo
SamAnne @Jari-chan hah! Well,I‘m obsessed with salmon! 8mo
Jari-chan @SamAnne Haha 😁 well, there's not a lot of actual salmon in the book, though😅 8mo

#BookCoverChallenge
Day 286.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

It was interesting reading these at the same time as Green's essay collection, in that I found some similar flaws (I wonder if they are flaws in essay in general). Overall, I enjoyed some of them, especially the tragically unfinished Dirk Gently book. Others interested me less or disappointed me. Mostly glad I read it though.

Listening to this #audiobook collection of letters, articles, and other pieces found on Douglas Adams‘ 4 computers after his death was a nostalgic delight. I had the great privilege of attending one of DA‘s readings in Germany in the nineties. At that time, he was promoting Last Chance To See. He was a great talent!

Aimeesue Last Chance to See is a great (but sad) book. I still mourn the Chinese River Dolphins. ☹️ 5y

“First you had to fight the Stones fans, which was tricky because they fought dirty and had their knuckles nearer the ground.“ [4]

Not cool, man—not cool!

It's hard to rate this collection of essays, interviews, book forewords, and the incomplete third Dirk Gently book. I was entertained or educated by most parts, so it's definitely a pick. It's so sad that we lost him at such a young age.

In addition to listening at my normal times of day, I got some extra listening time while working this puzzle.

Absolutely brilliant. Adams has always been one of my favorite voices. And this book a brilliant collection of non-fiction and fiction shorts and an unfinished novel. Highly recommend for Big Fans. 5 out of 5 on GR

“Seems a bit rough on the old rhino as well,” said Dirk. “And now here‘s another one.”

There's always a moment when you start to fall out of love, whether it's with a person or an idea or a cause, even if it's one you only narrate to yourself years after the event: a tiny thing, a wrong word, a false note, which means that things can never be quite the same again.

I spy a great space exploration book in the line on the new #Avatar Flights of Passage ride in #Disney ! They also had some selections by Jane Goodall and other conservationists and explorers, as well as some made-up books about the Na'vi. What reading material would you recommend to the research team?

HeySaidRenee @MrBook Thanks 😊 I figured with the 42 Litfluence score, a Douglas Adams quote was a good place to start on @Litsy 8y
