While the other field mice work to gather grain and nuts for winter, Frederick sits on a sunny rock by himself. I gather sun rays for the cold dark winter days, he tells them. Another day he gathers colors, and then words. And when the food runs out, it is Frederick, the dreamer and poet, whose endless store of supplies warms the hearts of his fellow mice, and feeds their spirits during the darkest winter days. Fredericks story will warm readers as well in this Caldecott Honor winning fable. Now available as an eBook.

“Frederick” is a Caldecott Award Honor Book. This book is a tall tale where the characters are made up of animals. Each mouse has a task to gather food and other necessities for winter hibernation. However, Fredrick claims his job is to absorb the sun and colors of the summer time. The moral that can be learned from this story is that everyone has special talents in their own way.

I enjoyed reading this story because the fifth mouse is understood but he is valuable in a different way than the other mice. I think students would be able to relate to this story, this would be a great way for students to point out their strengths.

Frederick won a Caldecott Honor in 1968. This book is about a family of five field mice who are preparing for winter. One of the mice have an unconventional way of preparing, the other mice do not seem to understand what the fifth mouse is doing until winter arrives. The illustrations in the book are a simple collage style that gives the mice life.

My best friend sent me this book because she finds it "inspiring during these thin times." ? It's a lovely story about needing to gather more than just food to survive the winter. But it also reminds us about how the seasons are a cycle. I think it's a perfect & hopeful story for the pandemic. ❤

The other mice learn to value Frederick‘s tho it differs from the kind of work they do gathering food for winter. When they are stuck in the winter gloom Frederick‘s gift of poetry and his ability to evoke the colors of spring for the other mice is a valuable contribution like the physical sustenance. Sweet, simple drawings. #bbrc #picturebooksatoz #letterF

Childhood books #24in48 challenge

This Caldecott award winning (1937) F book “Frederick” is great for SR. This story has a theme of spirit and how simple things can help you survive in hard situations. This story is great for students to analyze the main character while being creative! http://users.manchester.edu/student/jnhamm/Profweb/My_Choice_Trade_Books[1].pdf

Thayes1787 EL #20 will be great for the activity because it helps students comprehension by listing words / phrases that were important during the story. UDL principle 2.1 focuses on vocabulary and symbols which is a great principle for this story!

Frederick by Leo Lionni is a great book to GR! It won‘t the Caldecott Honor Award and it is such a wonderful TL book. The story is about how the mice are all preparing for winter, but Frederick was not helping. However, his stories are what lifts the spirits of everyone during the winter. The UDL that I think is best for the book is 6.1 because their end goal is to make it through the winter and the listed spirits and happiness they received from

AmyPerezCubas Frederick was really nice 6y
AmyPerezCubas A popular way to help students understand the Vocabulary in this book is to make slideshows with pictures so they can understand the meaning. A fun activity for the kids to do is to make their own mice and even create a story for it! This traditional literature, Frederick by Leo Lionni, won the Caldecott Honor award and it would be a simple book to GR. This book is about Frederick and his family getting ready to prepare themselves for the winter. But Frederick collects something different such as, the sun, colors of the rainbow and words. When the family didn‘t have anything to share or to say, Frederick shares the words and things he collected to lift their spirits.

DianaHerrera https://study.com/academy/lesson/frederick-by-leo-lionni-lesson-plan.html The lesson in the link above is short and simple. The instructor is to read the book to the class and pause to ask higher order thinking questions during the reading. For the activity the students will fold a piece of white printer paper horizontally and vertically. This will then create four squares. (edited) 6y
DianaHerrera In the first box the student will illustrate a cover of the book of anything they wish to draw and write the title, author, and their name as the illustrator. In the second box, the students will write “In the beginning ___” and fill in the blank and then they should draw a picture that goes with the sentence. In the third box, the students will write “Next, ___” and fill in the blank and draw a picture again. 6y
DianaHerrera In the last box, the student will write “Finally, ___” filling in the blank and drawing a picture. The students can share to their shoulder partner or with the class. 6y
DianaHerrera The UDL that best corresponds to this book would be 2.2 which is to clarify syntax and structure of the story. The EL strategies that would include in this lesson would be number 16 – integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities. EL numbers 6, 11, and 22. #UCFLAE3414SuB18 6y

Everyone is working hard collecting food and preparing, but Frederick seems to be in his own little world, not at all concerned with the work to be done. I read this animal F book as a brain break from studying, and it conveys a deep message that even younger kids could understand. The book follows a short story of five mice who are preparing for winter. While the four mice work to supply food, the fifth one prepares for the cold months. in a way that no one expected. It carries the message that it takes more than food and shelter to survive: it takes a creative spirit too! #UCFLAE3414SP18

erin.yarbrough This Caldecott honor winner would be great as a S or a RT due to its short, yet impactful story. It would also be great for a RA, IR, or SR for K-2. Here‘s some freebies for a great lesson plan! https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-posts/meghan-everette/frederick-freebie... 6y
erin.yarbrough By using an RT, 1.1-1.3 create alternative ways of understanding the book. This keeps students engaged with the story, and it only takes 5 students to reenact. Putting students in a group also uses #32 and #48 for ESOL students. Thank you again Dr. Spalding for such a great book! 6y
