Popped into town this morning whilst waiting for my boyfriend to go on his lunch break. I had another book themed gift voucher from Christmas to spend. I decided to browse the classics section. One of my bookish goals is to read one classic a month. I'm looking forward to starting these at some point.

CarolynM The Enchanted April ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
SealedWithInk @CarolynM is it good? I had only heard of it from one of the booktubers I watch. She has it on her TBR 6y

From out of the 5 books I've read so far this year, the longest one has been 480 pages, the shortest is 305. I know it's only the early days of this year but it's time to amp it up a bit with a big chunky book. This one technically is two books though I'm classifying it as one. It comes in at 805 pages. I'd better get cracking on with it.

A book much needed for its time, a story portraying the life of a black teenage girl after she witnesses her black friend being killed by a police officer. As much as I enjoyed reading this it shouldn't be relevant to modern history.

1) In terms of numbers, I want to read 60. I do have other bookish goals that I have recently posted.
2) Nothing to eat, but if I'm at my boyfriend's parents we will welcome in the New Year with something bubbly, usually bucks fizz.
3) I'm not really into super heros.

I knew that this was a well known classic but before reading it I didn't know why. Now I now why. This book in her autobiographical series (another thing I didn't realise till I started reading this) tells of her childhood, one that at times was extremely hard. I would really recommend it. I look forward to reading the rest of her autobiographies.

Homegoing: A novel | Yaa Gyasi
Pickpick

Starting out during the slave trade, Homegoing tells the family histories of two sisters who are never to meet but who are both impacted by the slave trade. It goes on to span the family stories of those after them who feel the after affects by each sister. All of the characters are victims of racism and it's cruelty, this shaping each of their lives, regardless of the time they are born.

This year I want to be a better reader. I've started working on my reading journal. This is a list of my goals. Some of these I already do but not everyday. Others are new ones or ones that I specifically want to work on. Are there any more goals you think I should have? Do you have any reading goals for this year? Also, if you keep a reading journal, what pages/spreads do you have? #2019readinggoals

As much as I love spending time with my family and my boyfriend, the Christmas and New Year period is exhausting. I've either been celebrating with family, stopping over at my boyfriend's house, or been at work. Today I'm off work and my boyfriend is going away today for a conference. He won't be back till Saturday evening. So this is going to be a me day. I'm gonna chill at home reading Homegoing, with the plan of finishing it.

JacqMac That sounds so great! I find this time of year so overstimulating. Enjoy your me time. 6y
SealedWithInk @JacqMac Glad to know I'm not the only one who feels this way. Thank you, it's been great so far (apart from when I took my dogs out for a walk and stood in some poo!) 6y

So this year I want to really try harder to be a better reader. I'm wanting to plan some goals, which I'll start thinking more about tomorrow, though I already have a few in mind. Today has been quite good for me reading. I started Rotherweird by Andrew Caldecott on my Kindle this morning whilst my boyfriend was still asleep. I read some more of that on my way home from his. I've also started Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.

Bailedbailed

Got about half way through and decided it wasn't for me. I was more interested in the history and modern usage of language and colloquialisms than the grammar and spelling side, which is discussed more. I don't think it's badly written, it's just not what I was hoping to get out of it. If you are needing help with spelling and grammar then I'd recommend it. Some bits were also funny regarding history of language.

Mehso-so

So after pushing myself onwards to keep reading it, there was actually some aspects of the book I was starting to enjoy. Out of the three parts, the second was the 'best' written. It's just a shame the first and third ones were not that good. The descriptions of character actions were not always clear. The ending was a bit strange to understand (still not 100% sure what happened). I feel the writing let this book down.

So far this book has made me fall asleep on three occasions today. Not sure if it's to do with two being while in the car and the other lying on the sofa. Nonetheless it's something that hasn't happened to me before. The premise sounds great but so far the writing and the plot are messy.

Edit: Not so good reviews on Goodreads either.

An incredibly detailed, fascinating, yet heartbreaking book on the legal, political, and personal circumstances of the terms 'genocide' and 'crimes against humanity' and the individuals behind these terms. As well as this, the book is also a memoir of the authors grandfather, who too faced the horror of the influence of Nazi Germany.

From one big book to an even bigger book. This one has 721 pages (that's including an acknowledgement page). This is the third book that I bought sometime ago in 2017 that I've had for several months that was sat on bedside table waiting to be read. Time to get on it! On a side note, because this was from a charity shop it only cost £3.99 as opposed to £16.99 #bargain

First book of 2018 read 😀 I actually bought this last year but never picked it up. It was just sat on my bedside table for several months along with a couple of other books. Planning on reading the other two books next and then I can dive back in to my books that I bought at the very end of last year with Christmas vouchers.

Other topics raised include the e-book industry, libraries, and book ownership. All this, and of course, discussion of some of the books on his 'List of Betterment'
