No #cozyreadingnook from me as I've spent the morning at my heart hospital for my annual mot - everything is fine.

On the plus side I managed to pick up this book from the book stall that gets rid of ex-library books!

The difficult thing about very well written books about terrible people is that often I just can‘t enjoy them even when I think they‘re really well done. I loved Iris Murdoch‘s writing style and would absolutely read more by her, and the main character was amazingly created on the page, I just can‘t truthfully say I *enjoyed* it that much.

kgriffith Hear, hear. I‘m still angry about the time I spent reading 6mo
Chrissyreadit I just experienced a well written book that was so sad I hated it. Completely understand. 6mo

Cloudy but warmer then it looks on the south bank today for lunch. I read Iris Murdoch on the lawn in front of the Tate modern with some gentle music from a really good busker next to a homeless charity fundraiser, which was a lovely atmosphere. I‘m enjoying this book a lot but only have 4 days before it‘s back to the library so the rush ruins the mood a little bit

When the weekend ends, sometimes I have the odd fantasy of wanting to escape to some vague, lonely city by the sea, and just read for several days without interruption. I might be able to make some progress on my TBR then 🤔
Just placed a hold on the Olivia Laing, which sounds like an interesting reflection on her move to NYC and the loneliness she experienced there, along with an analysis of the same feelings in art.

readordierachel That sounds pretty perfect actually. Curious about the book! I'm reading Crudo right now and really enjoying it. 7mo

Love this cover image and I loved the book too. The narrator is frankly detestable and the reader has to wonder why he has so many women pursuing him, especially after his plot to get an old childhood sweetheart to fall in love with him by imprisoning her in his house, but the characters are so wonderfully drawn and there is a subtle sense of mystery about cousin James and his capabilities.

The point, the point? A self-absorbed, unlikeable narrator tells us about his brilliantly successful career in the theatre, how he was (unaccountably) catnip to almost every woman who crossed his path, and what he had for his dinner. Oh, and he goes swimming and has some tedious friends to stay. Couldn‘t finish it, didn‘t want to, don‘t care.

TiffanyMichele Lol 😂 1y
CarolynM Iris Murdoch seems to specialise in unlikable narrators, but they're usually interesting. I haven't read this one. Have you read any of her others? 1y

This book starts out slow, but halfway through it gets really intense. The plot is outwardly thin all the way through, but there are so many strands, such obsession, insanity, growth, relapse. What do we really know? What can we rely on? Not memory, not our biased perceptions of others. A crazy bunch of characters that, while unlikable, fascinate. And such amazing prose! My first Murdoch, but not my last.

LibrarianRyan Hey, nothing to do with this post, but you should get a book depository delivery from me. No matter what I tried I could not get shipping below $56 because of the odd dimensions of the book. I tried to smile the thing at least 4 times but shipping to the UK is sooooooo expensive. I could have sent it to Germany for $15. It's ridiculous. Anyway, a book and an extra that looks fun should be delivered this week. 2y
Leniverse @LibrarianRyan Oh no, that's crazy! $56 just to send a book!? 😳I know we're on an island here, but such a price difference is just senseless. I mean, it has to cross the Atlantic whether it goes to the UK or to mainland Europe. ☹️ But you're a lovely book fairy and your shipments are creating little lights of happiness all over the world, so I think it's definitely related to this post anyway! 😘 2y

Leniverse @Cathythoughts She says he reads all her letters to make sure she's not getting secret love letters from men. 😳 But she also goes into strange hysterical fits and other odd behaviour to manipulate him. The son says they love hating and tormenting each other. Very strange and unhealthy dynamics and it's hard to tell what is really going on. 2y
Cathythoughts I think I have to read this 2y
Leniverse @Cathythoughts It's a strange book. Slow paced. All narrated through the diary/memoirs of the woman's childhood sweetheart who is both completely narcissistic and completely obsessed with her. There are so many clues that he's an unreliable narrator, but he also records conversations with friends who give a different perspective. I'm really wondering how it's all going to end. 2y

So much for my first official attempt at my #1001books goal. I just couldn‘t get into this. Writing is good, but just too slow paced and nothing new was really happening. After 250 pages of the narrator still talking about his old love, I found I was dreading trying to read more. DNF halfway through. I will not force myself to finish these books but will give them a shot.

Kammbia1 Wow @ValerieAndBooks I've read that Murdoch is an excellent writer and The Sea, The Sea is her major work. 2y
kathedron I've read two of hers (but not this one). I enjoyed The Bell but found The Philosopher's Pupil irritating. I'll probably try another but am not in any great hurry. 2y
DreeMorris Oh no! Is this another “old man reminisces” book? I swear it‘s a genre on its own—and I am not a fan lol. 2y

ValerieAndBooks @Kammbia1 I did like her writing. Just had a really hard time getting into it. I‘d like to try this again someday 😊. 2y
ValerieAndBooks @River_Voice I think it was me at this time, not her. Maybe when I am at a quiet moment of life? And I can understand how you might like one more than the other by her! 2y
ValerieAndBooks @AudreyMorris haha, yes, something like that, on top of being re-acquainted with her (by coincidence...it‘s always by coincidence 🙄). Her writing is good and possibly there‘s some kind of twist coming. I just don‘t have the patience right now. 2y
ValerieAndBooks @JenP I will try this one again...but want to finish one soon to feel a sense of accomplishment 😊. Need to look at the #1001books list again to see what‘s in my TBR already! 2y
Redwritinghood Oh no! I love Murdoch‘s work. Hopefully, you‘ll find others by her that you like. 2y
Leniverse @ValerieAndBooks @AudreyMorris @River_Voice @Kammbia1 @JenP I'm about halfway through the main part now and while it is still slow it has certainly gotten intense! The "old man" is clearly an unreliable narrator but his old love that he's obsessed with seems quite insane and equally obsessed with an ostensibly abusive husband. And there are far too many coincidences. I don't know what to believe or how this will end. 2y
ValerieAndBooks @Leniverse I look forward to what you think when you‘re done. I may just try to pick it up again before I forget what I‘ve read so far! @AudreyMorris @River_Voice @Kammbia1 @JenP 2y

Charles Arrowby, a retiring theater director, moves from London to the coast to write his memoirs.
He seems quite likable, until you realize that it's only his point of view. Then people from London come visiting him and his first love appears to live in the village. Suddenly, you get to know another side of Charles: sometimes directly by letters others write to him, but mostly indirectly by his own story. Highly recommended! #1001books #manbooker

The sea which lies before me as I write glows rather than sparkles in the bland May sunshine. With the tide turning, it leans quietly against the land, almost unflecked by ripples or by foam. Near to the horizon it is a luxuriant purple, spotted with regular lines of emerald green. At the horizon it is indigo. #somethingforsept #booksetbythesea
