It Happened One Summer
It Happened One Summer: A Novel | Tessa Bailey
107 posts | 137 read | 1 reading | 54 to read
Tessa Bailey is back with a Schitt's Creek-inspired rom-com about a Hollywood "It Girl" who's cut off from her wealthy family and exiled to a small Pacific Northwest beach town... where she butts heads with a surly, sexy local who thinks she doesn't belong. Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father's dive bar... in Washington. Piper hasn't even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won't last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can't do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She's determined to show her stepfather--and the hot, grumpy local--that she's more than a pretty face. Except it's a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there's an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn't want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan--and this town full of memories--may have already caught her heart.

Such a cute read! Tessa Bailey did it again with this one and I honestly wish Piper and Hannah had another sister that we could read about! I can‘t believe I put off this series for so long.

The story line was uninspired and predictable, dialogues were cheesy and non-original, characters - annoying. Steamy, saucy, but cringy and foolish. However, I liked the sister relationship between Piper and Hannah 🙂

This started off strong, but then dragged out, becoming too toxic for my current mood. I liked the main characters initially, but by the 3/4 mark, I was bored an uninterested in their relationship. It wasn‘t terrible, it just wasn‘t good, either. It was inconsistent.

A cute romance, between a fisherman and a socialite forced to move from LA to a small town in the Pacific Northwest to prove that she has more substance than style while running the local bar that had belonged to her late father. Lots of fun!

Suet624 Those characters look like Mutt and Alexa from Schitts Creek! 9mo

My second time reading the tagged book so you can probably guess I like it a lot 😮 it‘s funny, Brendan is really really not for me as a romantic hero (I don‘t at all need anyone growling at me that I belong to them) but I still find this book really comforting and fun. I just bought a copy for a friend and it made me realise how much I wanted to go back to Westport. I want to inherit a bar in a small fishing town and reinvent myself there ngl

I really wanted to hate Piper. At one point, I definitely did. Overall, good for her; talk about character development. I fell in love with Westport as a location. All the characters were well developed and added to the heartfelt rom-com. I was sad to see it end, I want the final pieces of Piper/Brendan/Hannah/Fox‘s stories. I can‘t wait to journey with them in book 2. Cute, fun read with some definite 🌶️ thrown in.

⭐⭐⭐2.5-3.0
It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey promises an enticing summer romance that should keep readers engaged throughout. However, despite its potential, the novel falls short in a couple of key areas, leaving me with mixed feelings.

Absolute perfection ??

A Schitts Creek inspired story where an "It Girl" is cut off from her wealthy family and has to fend for herself in a seaside town.
The characters were fantastic, they're all likeable in their own way. And the spice.... ???
If any captains named Brendan want to fall in love with me, I'm cool with it. Just sayin'.

Finally finished my first #AuldLangSpine pick from @HOTPock3tt - I don‘t know what it was about this one, I tried two times before this to read it and ended up putting it down… I did enjoy it this time, even if it‘s not my very favorite Tessa Bailey. However: up next is Truth and Beauty, which I love and I‘m so happy for the push to re-read!

HOTPock3tt The funny thing is, I put it down at first too!😂 when @sprainedbrain finished it and told me how good it was, then I picked it back up. Once I got past the beginning I ended up loving it and it became one of my fave books of the year, but I did drop it at first lolol 😆 @mcipher 1y

In the beginning, I thought that the setting would be too unrealistic, typical for the genre. And I disliked both main characters so much.
As the story evolved, it was clear that the insecurities and flaws of the main characters, their growth were the main plot beside the deliciously steamy romance. And I fell in love with the characters.
If you're looking for a spicy rom-com with some drama and character development, this is the perfect book.

This is my first time reading this author and I liked it. There were some corny lines but overall the story was good. The sex scenes were extra steamy and if you are looking for that you won't be disappointed. I will definitely read more by this author.

It was cute & rather spicy, and I liked Piper & Brendan. But there were some things that just bugged me, including Brendan calling Piper “baby” excessively. But the bigger things that bugged me were the near insta-love after setting this up more as an enemies to lovers, and then the contrived conflict. I had imagined several potential conflicts going into the final scene, and yet the one that happened felt weak and a bit too forced. 3.5 ⭐️

RenePenn In my opinion Hook, Line & Sinker was better. 2y

At some points I LOVED this book, at others I cringed. It was hilarious but in some of the love/sex scenes, the language was SOO over the top. I laughed instead of thinking it was sexy/sweet. I've never seen Shicht Creek, and maybe that's just not my thing. But I did enjoy the book. The narrator was pretty good although she mispronounced some words—overall a decent book.

Piper has a reputation for being a wild child. Paparazzi follow her in LA as she lives her life through social media. After an out of control party, her step dad decides enough is enough. He cuts her off and sends her to where her real father was from to take over the bar he owned. Can Piper survive a small coastal town and the rough bearded sailors?
A laugh out loud tale with a range of loveable characters. A great beach read.
