It Happened One Summer
It Happened One Summer: A Novel | Tessa Bailey
76 posts | 103 read | 49 to read
Tessa Bailey is back with a Schitt's Creek-inspired rom-com about a Hollywood "It Girl" who's cut off from her wealthy family and exiled to a small Pacific Northwest beach town... where she butts heads with a surly, sexy local who thinks she doesn't belong. Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father's dive bar... in Washington. Piper hasn't even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won't last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can't do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She's determined to show her stepfather--and the hot, grumpy local--that she's more than a pretty face. Except it's a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there's an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn't want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan--and this town full of memories--may have already caught her heart.

This is my first time reading this author and I liked it. There were some corny lines but overall the story was good. The sex scenes were extra steamy and if you are looking for that you won't be disappointed. I will definitely read more by this author.

It was cute & rather spicy, and I liked Piper & Brendan. But there were some things that just bugged me, including Brendan calling Piper “baby” excessively. But the bigger things that bugged me were the near insta-love after setting this up more as an enemies to lovers, and then the contrived conflict. I had imagined several potential conflicts going into the final scene, and yet the one that happened felt weak and a bit too forced. 3.5 ⭐️

RenePenn In my opinion Hook, Line & Sinker was better. 2mo

I think Tessa just isn‘t for me. Every time I try I end feeling meh about the book. Objectively the writing was good but I just didn‘t like Piper‘s Kardashian/Paris Hilton vibe & I wasn‘t really sold on Brendan or the family secrets.

Contemporary, cheesy romance that would make a great comedy movie.
I really liked every single page of it.
Nice, quick read that had me smiling throughout the pages.
Perfect for getting ready for those summer, beach reads 😍

At some points I LOVED this book, at others I cringed. It was hilarious but in some of the love/sex scenes, the language was SOO over the top. I laughed instead of thinking it was sexy/sweet. I've never seen Shicht Creek, and maybe that's just not my thing. But I did enjoy the book. The narrator was pretty good although she mispronounced some words—overall a decent book.

July was a great reading month for me, even though I fell completely into a Zodiac Academy obsession/pit of despair and sort of derailed my planned reads for a couple of weeks. 😅

23 books finished (15 audio + 8 with my 👀)

6 bingos, read my #BookSpin (but not my #DoubleSpin, bailed on one or I would have hit 24.

Favorites were the tagged, Part of Your World, and Yerba Buena.

Piper has a reputation for being a wild child. Paparazzi follow her in LA as she lives her life through social media. After an out of control party, her step dad decides enough is enough. He cuts her off and sends her to where her real father was from to take over the bar he owned. Can Piper survive a small coastal town and the rough bearded sailors?
A laugh out loud tale with a range of loveable characters. A great beach read.

Surprising no one, I loved this book.

Funny, sweet, minimal angst, super sexy 🌶 scenes… I thought I was not going to be able to stand Piper, but I ended up loving her.

So good on audio, I listened in one day.

This needs to be a Netflix movie ASAP. Brendon is your blue blood hard working man. Piper feels like today's girl who is so much more than her Instagram posts.

I picked this up because it was going getting some hype. I was expecting a Hallmark movie type romance, but it was a bit too raunchy for that so I think Netflix would be a better fit. There are a lot of very steamy scenes so I think that is the hype (like 50 shades type of hype). I loved the banter between the main characters, especially Piper‘s witty comebacks. This book made me laugh out load many times. I ordered the second book already.

I don‘t usually read romances, but I really enjoy Tessa Bailey‘s books, including It Happened One Summer. Piper, while seemingly ditzy and materialistic, is endearing and you grow to love her right along with the residents of Westport. Brendan is 🔥 🌶, but I love that he has to grow too in order for their relationship to stand a chance. Fast read that is perfect for escapism or lovers of romance and HEA. ❤️

After Piper‘s partying goes too far, she‘s sent to Westport, WA by her stepfather. That‘s where she meets rugged local fisherman Brendan. They butt head at first, but as they spend more time together fixing up a new bar, they realize their feelings for each other.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the voice, the plot, and the characters. There‘s a nice tie to the next book. Can‘t wait to read it.

I like Brendan's kind of grumpy characters because it was clear from the beginning that he was actually kind and nice. Piper was naive but she had a big heart.

This cozy small town with fishermen and people who had always known each other was sweet and lovable.

The beginning was especially good and there were several scenes that made me laugh! I am not a fan of insta-love, it felt unbelievable.

Sparks fly when LA socialite, Piper, is cut off by her stepdad and sent away to remodel an old run-down bar where she meets a rough, tough, insanely hot fisherman. I must say, I was not prepared for all the SPICE in this novel. I mean, wow! Opposites attract / brief enemies to lovers tropes. Can‘t wait for Hannah‘s story! 🤩

Oooh this hit ALL the right romcom notes. Cute banter? Check. Heartwarming hero/heroine? Check. Just as heartwarming side characters? Check. Spice? 🌶🌶🌶🌶 check!! The ONLY thing my enemies-to-lovers loving heart needed was a little bit more opposites-attract banter before we settled into the i-want-you phase, but damn, once we settled in there I was one happy camper. A delightful, adorable, heartwarming romcom about finding yourself ♥️. ★★★★☆.

This book was adorable, full of sunshine, romance, and an adorable main character who takes life and makes it what she wants. Piper is such a happy character and Brendan isn‘t, he‘s grumpy and hates change but they make it work and I love Tessa Bailey‘s romance novels. The only think I didn‘t love was the miscommunication troupe at the very end so I‘d say 4 instead of 5 stars, had they just talked it out we could have avoided the last 30 pages!

I love a grumpy sunshine trope and this book was absolutely awesome.I thought Piper would drive me nuts with her influencer “job” and lack of real world experience, but I loved her optimism and ability to relate to anyone. She was a fun match for a very set in his ways fisherman. The dynamic between the two was sexy and hilarious at times too.
