The Love Hypothesis
The Love Hypothesis | Ali Hazelwood
When a fake relationship between scientists meets the irresistible force of attraction, it throws one woman's carefully calculated theories on love into chaos. As a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith doesn't believe in lasting romantic relationships--but her best friend does, and that's what got her into this situation. Convincing Anh that Olive is dating and well on her way to a happily ever after was always going to take more than hand-wavy Jedi mind tricks: Scientists require proof. So, like any self-respecting biologist, Olive panics and kisses the first man she sees. That man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotshot professor--and well-known ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford's reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive's career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding...six-pack abs. Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. And Olive discovers that the only thing more complicated than a hypothesis on love is putting her own heart under the microscope.

This was a cute contemporary romance with a fake dating trope, set in science academia. I liked how it addressed how women are underrepresented in science, and how the characters became friends through their fake dating as they inevitably got feelings. Of course, Olive denies her feelings for most of the book—overall a light and predictable read.

Unfortunately another booktok book that didn‘t live up to its expectations. With that being said, it was still a good book for those in between reading lulls. I didn‘t feel like I was reading about a couple in their late twenties “fake” dating but rather a high school relationship. I wish there was more character development beyond that. It was written in the third party so I feel like it was a missed opportunity to develop the characters more

Would you believe I genuinely forgot I wasn't supposed to be buying any books while browsing the supermarket yesterday?

I only remembered when I was already at the till, by which point they were buried under a big pile of sushi & cheese 😁

Three of these are saw-them-on-Litsy-and-want-to-join-in books. I don't read a lot of romance usually because if it's done badly I cringe and if it's done well I can't emotionally cope 😅😅

It was good, but some parts seemed a bit too predictable. I didn‘t like her friends because I thought they were too pushy. I get that it was important to the story. I guess I wanted the relationship to develop more organically and not so forced. I‘d still recommend it though. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I get the hype. A cute, light romcom with good female STEM representation that I really appreciated. The characters were fun, the interactions were awkward but still realistic, & the dialogue was well-crafted. The book didn't take itself too seriously & that made things feel extra fun. I enjoyed myself from beginning to end. The smut seriously caught me off-guard. Holy moly, Ali Hazelwood can write a sex scene. Stand back & prepare yourself.

My main regret about reading The Love Hypothesis is that I was not able to read it all in one sitting. It was delightful, heart warming, heart wrenching and real while also being escapist. As someone dedicated to their studies and likely a life in academia (though not in STEM) this book nailed the best and worst of it. I also appreciated a lead on the asexual and aromantic spectrum that I could relate to. No, there is no power-play between leads.

Advice given to the female protagonist by her Ph.D advisor: "Carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre white man.”

The book‘s academic setting features a couple of strong female STEM Ph.D. candidates, one of whom advocates for other female BIPOC students in STEM. Fully aware of the on-the-nose tropes it adheres to, namely the hate-to-love and fake dating tropes, there are no real surprises here, but the book is enjoyable nonetheless. #BOTM

This was a fun listen, even though I could see the plot ‘twists‘ coming a mile off. (Actually there was one I didn‘t see)? It was light and fluffy, great for audio but I think it may have annoyed me a bit had I read the physical book.

I had to fast-forward the sex scenes though as they were just eeewwww!

#unpopularopinion Although I appreciated the women in STEM representation, I found the romcom part unbelievable. And I hated Olive. She was annoying and irritating. And other than Olive being nice & intelligent, I didn‘t get why Adam liked her. The character descriptions were weak and the character development needed work. I finished the book but I didn‘t enjoy it. Fake relationships are just not my fave romcom trope.

Twainy Love your review! Not a fan of romance so I‘m the last person to listen to when it comes to them. I take them all as fairy tales. 😁 2mo

This was a fun, rom-com tropey read. I love that it is set in the world of academia; a world I‘m very familiar with. Olive could get irritating with her complete lack of self-esteem, but, honestly, I think my irritation at that was because I recognized a lot of myself there.

This book was really hyped, but for me it lived up to it. I think fake dating is one of the best tropes. Is it realistic? No, but it is fun. I also really liked the STEM/academic setting. Her challenges there were all too real. One negative is the overuse of the MC crying silently and only realizing it when she noticed her face was wet. It happened multiple times!

shanaqui I don't know that I've ever not noticed myself crying except once when I was in shock, so it always seems so odd in fiction! 3mo
MallenNC @shanaqui I don‘t think I have either. It‘s one of those things that probably seems dramatic to an author. I‘d let it go if it were only in the book once but it was at least four times. 3mo

It was cute, the characters were a bit annoying but it made for an enjoyable listen and I thought of my daughter a lot as she‘s thinking of going for a PhD in the STEM field.
