Red: A History of the Redhead | Jacky Colliss Harvey
49 posts | 10 read | 10 to read
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The brilliantly told, captivating history of red hair throughout the ages and across multiple disciplines, including science, religion, politics, feminism and sexuality, literature, and art The mere mention of red hair calls to mind vivid pictures. Stereotypes of redheaded women range from the funloving scatterbrain, like Lucille Ball, to the fiery-tempered vixen or the penitent prostitute (Mary Magdalene, for example, is almost always depicted as a redhead). Red-haired men are often associated with either the savage barbarian or the redheaded clown. But why is this so? Red: A History of the Redhead is the first book to explore the history of red hair and red-headedness throughout the world. With an obsessive fascination that is as contagious as it is compelling, author Jacky Colliss Harvey begins her quest in prehistory and traces the redhead gene as it made its way out of Africa with the early human diaspora, only to emerge under Northern skies. She goes on to explore red hair in the ancient world (from the Tarim mummies in China to the Islamic kingdom of the Khazars); the prejudice manifested against red hair across medieval Europe; red hair during the Renaissance as both an indicator of Jewishness during the Inquisition and the height of fashion in Protestant England, where it was made famous by the Henry VIII and Elizabeth I; the modern age of art, and literature, and the first positive symbols of red hair in children's characters; modern medicine and science and the genetic and chemical decoding of red hair; and finally, red hair in contemporary culture, from advertising and exploitation to "gingerism" and the new movement against bullying. More than a book for redheads, Red is the exploration of evolution and gene mutation, as well as a compelling social and cultural study of how prejudice and misconceptions of "other" evolve across centuries and continents and are handed down through generations and from one culture to another.

I had high hope for this book and I was disappointed with how much of it was commentary. I appreciated learning about historical significance of redheads and how gendered people‘s concepts of redheads are. The author does state that her book is focused on Europe, as the USA has other (racial) issues & prejudices that make it unique and outside her experience as a European.
2/5 stars read for a well written semi-history with lots of commentary

What a fun read for a ginger, or even someone who loves a ginger. There is some depressing history in here, but the overall message at the end is so uplifting that it‘s worth it. I am a proud redhead. I wish I had this book when I was younger, when I wanted more than anything to be blonde or brunette so I could “be like everyone else.”
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I think the gingers of the world (2%-6% of the population) need a book like this. I‘m glad it exists. Is it perfect? No. Is anything? No. Is this worth the read? Absolutely. #JackyCollissHarvey #Red #Ginger #redhead 4y

I don‘t know what book the other Liten read, but these are the closing words (literally the last words of the book) and they point blank differentiate between the minor issue of hair color prejudice, and other more dangerous forms of prejudice...and not one mention of Black Lives Matter. No one in their right mind, including this author, thinks ginger-hate is anywhere near racism!!!
#JackyCollissHarvey #Red #Ginger #redhead

GingerAntics This is a beautiful call to action. I think the snarky review claiming Harvey equates ginger-hate with Black Lives Matter says far more about that litten and absolutely nothing about this book. 4y

And yet it happens all the time. For all the clearly wrong prejudices that have been brought back since 2016, I‘m still waiting for the day it‘s okay again to openly do and say horrible things to gingers. I‘ve heard a few terms in my day that I‘m really hoping to never hear again.
#JackyCollissHarvey #Red #Ginger #redhead #prejudice #hate #anger #rage #trumpsamerica

GingerAntics In the Litsy reviews for this book, someone claimed that Harvey equated ginger hate to Black Lives Matter. If this is the section that person was talking about, no she did not. She didn‘t even come remotely close to that. I‘ve got one chapter left (Redhead Days) and I‘ve yet to find any mention of (let alone any equating to) Black Lives Matter. 4y
julesG I think the only time I truly detested having dyed my hair from its then still natural blonde to red was overhearing my father saying "If the roof's rusting, then the cellar's moist." ?? 4y
GingerAntics @julesG WOW!!! Your father said that about his daughter. That‘s just...WOW!!! Yeah, there was a whole chapter on that, how redheads are supposed to be more sexual than other people...at least red headed women. (edited) 4y

julesG It was an offhand remark about redheads in general and he was talking to my mother, but still. 🤮 4y

GingerAntics @Izai.Amorim oh god I‘m one of those, too!!! CRAP!!! 4y
Izai.Amorim Oh!!!! 😱😱 Red head and left handed! In the middle ages they would have burned you as a witch! The word for left in Italian is sinistra, deriving from il sinistro, the devil. The left hand is the evil hand... And in Africa they kill the albinos. Welcome to the human race: If it's different, we kill it! 4y
GingerAntics @Izai.Amorim exactly!!! I grew up Catholic which is still mildly Middle Ages. lol some of my earliest memories are of my grandmother ripping crayons and forks out of my left hand and shoving them in my right hand. I‘m forced ambidextrous now, but I far prefer my left over my right for writing and drawing. 4y

Crazeedi My sister is a true redhead, I'm auburn. My mom was true redhead as was her father, who's nickname was....Red 4y
GingerAntics @Crazeedi lol This book calls Benedict Cumberbatch a redhead, but he makes the distinction between red and auburn, too. He says he can‘t quite claim ginger ever so slightly, but he has plenty of relatives that can. My mom and her dad and her brother were all ginger, too. My mother used to not be able to say her brother‘s name (Kevin), so she called him Rusty when she was little. lol you get the best and the worst nicknames when you‘re ginger. 4y
GingerAntics @Crazeedi I had a coach call me “red headed stepchild” once. 4y

Texreader 1980s, while on a school trip to San Angelo (that‘s important because the water there was really filled with some weird stuff), a friend with black hair decided to dye it red. It turned a very very purple. Obviously the weird water affected it. Her behavior still puzzles me. The all important, why? And why on a school trip? 🤔 4y

This is probably why I am SO confused as to what I actually want for my own damn hair. Everyone seems to think they get to decide and tell you how to wear it. I don‘t even know what‘s my idea and what‘s someone else‘s anymore.
#JackyCollissHarvey #Red #Ginger #redhead #itsmyhead

Texreader This feels the same for folks with curly hair. I hated my curly hair growing up. It was massive and unmanageable until I found a decent hairstylist. But everyone tells curly haired people to just love it, and they are offended if you try to do something different, like its their hair! Then I had kids with crazy curly hair. They‘ve both embraced it brilliantly (better than I ever did). 4y
GingerAntics @Texreader that is such a good comparison. (God help me I have red hair and curly hair 😱) I feel like other people love it, but the people that actually know me feel like when it‘s curling nicely, it‘s messy. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Bloody double edged sword. 4y

@julesG MIND. BLOWN. I‘m down here in bloody Liberia (well, more like the Mediterranean Sea) and all my ancestors are from up in France, Ireland, Scotland, and Norway. No wonder we far prefer the climate in Minnesota and we don‘t mind Canada. My mind is absolutely blown.
#maps #mapmania #superimposed #vitaminD #health #sun #climate

GingerAntics @julesG I guess my 2nd/3rd grade German teacher did say Germany was SIMILAR to Minnesota. I suppose that fits with this. It‘s different, but not REALLY different. A little cooler. A little less daylight. 4y
julesG Lots of Germans emigrated to Minnesota. I think I have distant relatives there, too. My maternal great-grandmother's cousins emigrated about a hundred years ago. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG we sure do. We have a lot of people of German and even Scandinavian decent. I first started learning German in a little catholic school that‘s as an old German parish, started by German immigrants. I guess it‘s a slight step up for Germans and a massive step up for Scandinavian folks, from the looks of it. 4y

Texreader This is so cool!! 4y
GingerAntics @Texreader I googled and figured I‘d get a table or something. This map is way better. No tables or numbers needed. I never knew I needed this map, but I totally did. lol 4y
ju.ca.no This is really cool! Still you have to keep in mind that european weather is much warmer then the US‘s because of the gulf stream😊 but especially cool to see the distances like that! 4y
GingerAntics @ju.ca.no I wasn‘t so much concerned with weather as I was with how much daylight each country got. It stemmed from a conversation about vitamin D, from the tagged book. I do know it‘s warmer than you‘d think from this map in the U.K. 4y
ju.ca.no @GingerAntics ah I see☺️ I didn‘t even think of that😅 (edited) 4y
GingerAntics @ju.ca.no 🤣 that‘s the trippy part of this book. It goes places you wouldn‘t imagin. Jules is in a Germany and she was saying she was on this huge prescription vitamin D supplement once when she said Germany gets less daylight then we do here, so I googled and found this map. It‘s mind blowing that Europe‘s weather is very similar to here, but it‘s so much further north. 4y
ju.ca.no @GingerAntics it‘s really interesting indeed! I never really thought of that! 4y
GingerAntics @ju.ca.no right? We really don‘t think of all the little ramifications of being a few extra degrees north, even if the weather is similar. I‘m sure someone, somewhere has done studies of all the weird ways 15 minutes less daylight can effect the human body. To think, for millennia people have survived in all these different places without vitamin supplements or even knowing about vitamins. The human body really is an amazing thing. 4y
GingerAntics @ju.ca.no the tagged book talks about this lost viking colony in Greenland I think, and how science now believes that they all died because of a severe deficiency of vitamin D causing their bodies to just shut down. It‘s an interesting thought. 4y
ju.ca.no @GingerAntics that is indeed an interesting thought! 🤔 4y
GingerAntics @ju.ca.no written well, that could be really interesting to read about. 4y
ju.ca.no @GingerAntics it‘s really an interesting thought! I work in a museum where we also deal with climate and such things, I might try to work it into our exhibition as I really think this is super interesting to know! 4y
GingerAntics @ju.co.no oh that would be cool as an exhibit piece in a museum. The different side effects of living in different climates, and how those climates compare to other areas at the same latitude. 4y
ju.ca.no @GingerAntics exactly! We already deal with side effects - but we don‘t compare it much to other areas yet, so this would totally work as an addition🤗 4y

Amazingly true sentiment about genealogical DNA tests.
#JackyCollissHarvey #Red #Ginger #redhead #genetics #dna #wereallrelated

Texreader True! 4y
GingerAntics @Texreader I actually did a genealogical DNA test in 2013. I was so excited to do it, but then nothing really came of it...until this past year. It got me a literally sister (and two brothers). 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics Wow! Now there‘s some serious results! I did one a couple years ago. I‘ve been working on my genealogy since I was a kid and the DNA confirmed everything I knew—all Western European. The only surprise was some small amount of Iberian peninsula dna. I haven‘t yet tracked any ancestors there. 4y
See All 9 Comments
GingerAntics @Texreader I have a small percentage of that as well, but still no ancestors from there. My biggest shock was all the “viking” Norwegian I had in me. That‘s all the side I knew nothing about. 4y
GingerAntics @Texreader I‘ve been into genealogy since I was a kid, too. The DNA really gave me a whole new bit of information. I had long since given up on knowing anything or anyone from the unknown side of my family, then June 2019 I went from back to square one on a Sunday to knowing everything and everyone by Thursday. It‘s was crazy. It took one person logging in I‘d contacted ages ago who just hadn‘t logged in for a long time, and bam. 4y
Crazeedi @GingerAntics wow that's amazing. What can be discovered from our DNA is so crazy. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics that‘s why it‘s such a fun hobby!! 4y

SEE!!! Pale skin is better. Everyone can shut up and stop telling me to “get some sun.”
#JackyCollissHarvey #Red #Ginger #redhead #pale #paleskin #vitaminD

julesG Well, you should still get some sun for the vitamin D, 30 minutes in natural daylight with your skin free of sunblock should do the trick. Don't get burnt, don't roast in the sun for a tan. I have pale skin, too (thank you, Scandinavian genes), but have learned that my MS is less active when I get sun as often as possible. Just looking out for you here. 😘 4y
Crazeedi My dr told me I should supplement with D since I have this complexion 4y
Crazeedi @julesG I've read that most people who live north of a certain latitude are vit D deficient 4y
See All 11 Comments
julesG @Crazeedi True, especially in winter. I had to supplement with 10.000 IU once a week for a year, now I have to take 1.000 IU per day. 4y
GingerAntics @Crazeedi it‘s easier for you to make it naturally, but in certain climates you still need to supplement. (edited) 4y
GingerAntics @julesG I generally don‘t use sunscreen because my skin is so sensitive, using it once has me broken out for weeks and putting it on top of that burns. I can get burned in as little as 5 minutes, depending on the sun. I walk everywhere, though, so as long as it‘s sunny, I‘m getting my vitamin D. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG holy mother that seems like such a lot of vitamin D. It‘s been so rainy here lately, I‘m beginning to wonder if I should start popping a few vitamin D tablets. 4y
julesG Don't forget, I live in an area that has fewer hours of sunlight all year round than where you live. You should be fine. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG Germany has less sun year round? No one ever told us that in all my years in German class. I just found this map that superimposes Europe and the US based on latitude. Germany, and the UK are all up in bloody Canada!!! Hungary, Austria and most of France are up around Minnesota (which has normal bloody weather. Wow, ya learn something every day. 4y
julesG See. And yet, I'm glad I don't live in the Scandinavian parts with little to no sun all winter. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG yeah, three hours of daylight, one hour of daylight, then in summer the sun comes up at like 3 am. I don‘t know how my ancestors did it. 4y

Harvey focuses on art, symbolism, touches on genetics, religion, ethnicity, perceptions of the redhead, &the gender dichotomy between how redhead males &readhead females are perceived. It would have been nice to see a more extensive anthropological/ethnographic section. That being said it was a swift read free of the jargon that deters people from science books. Thankfully, Harvey includes a list of references for those who wish to delve deeper.

Interesting enough, but this redhead was a bit uncomfortable with the emphasis on redheads as a persecuted group. I'm sure it's worse in Harvey's native UK but from an American perspective tying Black Lives Matter to teasing gingers is a problematic leap at best.
