I was sooo late to the party on this one, but as the saying goes, right book at the right time. I was looking for something to escape into and lift my spirits. This book did that for me.

A fascinating combination of history, humor, travelogue, and the science surrounding the jackalope's probable inspiration from nature. Based on extensive research — from interviews at roadside museums to exploring international folktales & mythology about horned rabbits to the scientific discovery of the HPV vaccine — each chapter offers fascinating and often fun information about the jackalope and its meaning to people.
Wishing school work wasn‘t getting in the way of devouring this book because it is fantastic! A highly anticipated book that shows just how vitally important Edith Lewis was to both Cather‘s writing and her life. Lewis has long been dismissed or denigrated by scholars. Homestead‘s work is based in decades of research and a deep familiarity with archival resources on both women, some of which have only recently been made available to researchers.
The Invited is one of the most unique and believable ghost stories I've read. The unsuspecting couple doesn‘t move into a haunted house. They build one.
This debut novel is a page-turner that I highly recommend. If you like coming of age novels, historical fiction, stories about race, relationships, orphans, or foreign lands, you‘ll want to pick up Hum. If you‘re more of a non-fiction reader, this novel will provide loads of emotional context for what life was like under Apartheid.
“Meg‘s high-heeled slippers were dreadfully tight, and hurt her, though she would not own it, and Jo‘s nineteen hair-pins all seemed stuck straight into her head, which was not exactly comfortable; but, dear me, let us be elegant or die.”
Feminist sarcasm from 1868. 👍

Whenever she was in Denmark, she always took the opportunity to enjoy a hotdog.
Overall, the British reputation for cooking the world‘s worst food was undeserved, in Nora‘s opinion. At least when in London. There you could get the world‘s best sushi, curry and Thai. But they had no idea how to do a proper hotdog.
#FridayReads The book we‘ll be curling up with later tonight: The Paris Spy by Susan MacNeal. It‘s up for an Agatha Award in the Best Historical Novel category.
“Pain had shown him a niche behind the world‘s judgements, whither he could withdraw.”
Opening lines: “Later, the four remaining women could fully agree on only two things. One: No-one saw the bush land swallow up Alice Russell. And two: Alice had a mean streak so sharp it could cut you.” Hooked!
I‘m reading outside, trying to get a little vitamin D while the dogs chew sticks. We all have our passions.

“With age everything starts reminding you of something else.” Finishing this one today before I get out of bed.
