The Guncle
The Guncle | Steven Rowley
From the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus and The Editor comes a warm and deeply funny novel about a once-famous gay sitcom star whose unexpected family tragedy leaves him with his niece and nephew for the summer. Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is honestly a bit out of his league. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. Despite having a set of "Guncle Rules" ready to go, Patrick has no idea what to expect, having spent years barely holding on after the loss of his great love, a somewhat-stalled career, and a lifestyle not-so-suited to a six- and a nine-year-old. Quickly realizing that parenting--even if temporary--isn't solved with treats and jokes, Patrick's eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility, and the realization that, sometimes, even being larger than life means you're unfailingly human. With the humor and heart we've come to expect from bestselling author Steven Rowley, The Guncle is a moving tribute to the power of love, patience, and family in even the most trying of times.

I have wanted to read this book since it came out and I finally got a copy of the audiobook from Libby and I loved it! Even though the book centers around a tragedy there was so much comic relief in the book and I found myself laughing out load several times. I also really enjoyed the narration in the audiobook! It was so fun!

Plan to finish May with a bang! Will not have a #BookSpinBingo
( @TheAromaofBooks) but that is primarily due to: 1) sticking with books I wasn't interested in for too long and 2) not willing to re-read Harry Potter Deathly Hallows (next month - maybe) -

Enjoying all the reads this week -

A truly delightful book with humor, angst, and love. Patrick‘s adulthood best friend married his brother, had 2 kids, and lived on the other side of the country. But her death set in motion and unforeseen trip to rehab for the brother and a 3 month stint of caring for a niece and nephew who took over Gay Uncle Patrick‘s house and heart. Great insights to the heart about grief and loss and living through it…just what snarky Patrick needs.

This was significantly less lighthearted than i had been led to believe. Grief is a character in this story. It haunts adults and children alike. There were times when the Author‘s soapbox had flashing lights. These times would have benefited from a more show not tell approach. Still, a lovely ode to the imperfect but loving family.

KathyWheeler I loved it, but I was expecting a light-hearted story, not one where death and grief are woven throughout. 2w

GUP (Gay Uncle Patrick) suddenly finds himself taking on the role of primary caregiver for his niece and nephew.
Patrick has no idea what to expect, he quickly realises that parenting isn‘t just treats and jokes but dealing with life, death and self discovery too.
This book focuses on moving forwards and making new memories. The children and Patrick soon realise they need each other.
Full of heart, humour and adorable characters.

This book is all the feels! While it is funny and adorable, it is mostly a really beautiful and heartfelt examination of grief. I wasn‘t expecting that and it hit me hard. Having characters in different stages of grief not only showed those stages, but it showed that while the tendency may be to want to be swallowed by the darkness, coming out into the light, while hard, will save you.

I returned this to the library before getting a pretty picture.
I have the weirdest reading thing where I seem to be incredibly underwhelmed with pastel cover books. Thought I would give this a try anyways. I loved Patrick and JED. If this had been just about all of them I probably would have adored it. But it wasn't. I found the children annoying and the plot, what little there was, to be interesting but the execution fell flat for me.

My first ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 of 2022! The first two-thirds of this sweet novel of loss and grief had me LOL with all the antics GUP tried to get his niece and nephew to open up about the loss of their mom… the last third had me 😢😢 as GUP dealt with his own grief. I finished this yesterday in the early afternoon and tried to start my next read in the evening… it was too soon as I kept thinking about Patrick and his family.

Another winner recommended by @Cinfhen for #NYWD. I had seen this book around bookstagram but hadn‘t read it because I thought it would either be too sad or too sentimental. After reading @KarenUK ‘s review I immediately went to Libby and lucky me started reading the ebook ASAP. ( all other books tossed aside ) This has so much heart. Patrick‘s been chillaxing in Palm Springs since his hit sit com went off the air. But a family tragedy finds him the unexpected guardian to his niece and nephew. I cried and laughed. A great escape from winters cold ( it‘s set in California) It reminded me of my own wonderful Guncle 💚

Ever read a book else everyone loves & you vow to never read the author again but another comes out & it has such a charming premise that you can't not pick it up so you figure if you hate it you can write the author off forever but then it‘s a little sweet & a little melancholy & a little uplifting & a little funny and combines into a heartwarming read so now you have to go back & read the book that came out after the one you hated? This was one of my most fun reading experiences all year. GUP, Gay Uncle Patrick, is a hilariously bitchy, playful, reclusive prima-donna actor who by a tragic circumstance, has a summer of taking care of his little niece and nephew. It‘s funny and heartwarming and heartbreakingly sad at times, as Patrick and his charges, navigate their new world, and the awful losses they have endured. A perfect summer read.

I'm back to Litsy, y'all. Life has started to settle down a bit, and I'm hoping to get back to reading more.
My friend gave Guncle to me saying, " I couldn't get past the title-" not the best vote of confidence. However, I really enjoyed this. It managed to be really light even though a central premise of the novel is grief and how it brings the main characters together.

Crazeedi Welcome back!! I know how you feel. I had too much going on in my life earlier this year, my mind wasnt the best. Sometimes we have to just take care of ourselves. Glad to see you here again 5mo
