⭐⭐⭐ This was more of an examination of disasters than a guide book. If you are looking for straightforward solutions and actionable takeaways on disaster reduction, you will probably be disappointed in this book. However, I was very interested in the details provided on the history of disaster management including building codes and insurance. The writing is readable, but the structure could have been improved to add clarity. #nonfiction2018

With a storm and then a migraine, this series by Grace Burrowes has been my latest comfort food. Nothing a cat and a good book can't fix.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐If you have ever wondered what natural disasters do to a society, or how we can better prepare, or what is really going on to cause earthquakes, this is the book for you. I found it absolutely fascinating without being morbid or sensational. It looks at science, policy, and culture throughout history to be a call to action for a better approach to disasters.

🌲🌳🌲 A good audiobook to listen to while driving to and from the national park. Very accessible, although the author indulged a penchant for anthropomorphizing trees. I can't fault him, since his honest passion for forests was evident.

Ancient cepholopods were abundant and this book tells the history of how the most interesting mollusks in the world evolved. Unfortunately, the writing left me wanting more. I love squid and their cousins, but this was just okay. 🦑

Eilperin covers the rather fraught relationship between humans and sharks thoroughly in this book. It left me with mixed emotions, since humans do some things that are pretty terrible, but sharks are also so awesome. Well written and interesting for sure.

Listened to this book on a recent trip to Cape Cod. A surprisingly compelling account of a mass whale stranding and the legal battle(s) that ensued. Very well written, providing lots of facts as well as a history of whale research and balanced record of the trials.

This #romancy was free on Kindle a short while ago and I picked it up. The characters were likeable and there was a lot of adventure in the plot as well. What I liked most were the historical details that the author wove into the story to make it feel more real. 4⭐

Very straight forward, this book described the pivotal events in the discovery of the Coelacanth, a 400 million year old fish species. It gives background on the people involved and context for why people should be excited about this "fossil fish." ?

Another fish 🐠 book, this time about the mysterious and amazing jellyfish. A mix of science writing and memoir that generally worked well. The kind of book where I didn't know how much I didn't know until I started and then I was hooked. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #nonfiction2018

🦆🦆 The travels far and wide (including crossing the Pacific on a container ship) and the facts about how our globalized world works and how the ocean is a part of it, we're fascinating. However, I found the author insufferable. A few Moby Dick references we're to be expected, but this contained an entire essay, plus several other tangents unrelated to the actual thesis of the book.

Un-put-down-able. I was so excited to get a book from Garrett's perspective, as the only female doctor in London. This did not disappoint. There was great chemistry and suspense. I meant to only read the first chapter and ended up staying up late to read over half in one night. #romantsy

I read this because it was set in DC and I wanted a book for my trip. And it definitely had a great sense of time a place about. The characters, especially Molly and her family, were likeable. And while there were many very modern elements to the story, it never managed to shake off the weight of "you're a failure if no one loves you romantically." That was a major disappoinment to me.

I can't wait for the sequel to this to be released! It had everything I love about Marissa Meyer books.
Also, Adrian is such a cinnamon roll, I adored him.

5 ⭐ I loved this book. It was everything I could have asked for, personal, adventurous, informative, relevant. And it was about fish 🐡. The audio book narration was also excellent.

🌟🌟🌟🌟 I adored this book. In it Horne not only shows how America's heartland is changing, but tells the story of how people are coming together to overcome challenges. It is full of beautiful examples of how our differences can make us stronger. The many personal interviews add greatly to the rich backdrops of American landscapes. I was absolutely inspired.

⭐⭐⭐⭐I guess now I can say that I am indeed a person who can enjoy a multi hour audio book about checklists. Found this very interesting, both for the examples and for the new perspective Gawande brought to the simple checklist.

⭐⭐⭐⭐A biography if Alexander Von Humboldt and a history of his influence on writers and scientists. I listened to the audio book and found this very informative and enjoyed the writing. Explores how Humboldt helped to plant the seed of the environmental movement. Fit in well with the other books I'm reading lately about science in the age of exploration and nature conservation and preservation.

Despite the obvious bias (even the title) I thought this book presented a good look at the influences on and off the Scottish Enlightenment. Certainly gave a very historical account of things I was previously unaware of. And it was an excellent accompaniment to my trip to Edinburgh. My quest to learn more history continues.

????This is the story of Samuel Zemurray "America's Banana King." It was fascinating, with everything that a good adventure needs, including a rags to riches story, pirates, and intrigue. Zamurry's life was a roller coaster from beginning to end. In addition to the non-stop plot, the writing in this book was excellent. Cohen's exploration of the world of the early twentieth century and the complexities of his biography subject was fantastic.

One of several laugh out loud moments for me in this book. Definitely flew through it. #romantsy

🌟🌟🌟 I really enjoy Grace Burrowes and I already know that I will be picking up the next installment of this series. However, I thought the plot and writing in this were a bit clunky. Not bad, just unpolished. I did greatly appreciate that the relationship emphasized trust and respect above attraction. I often miss that in romance novels. Overall this was solid, but ultimately a little forgettable, which is fine by me.

It is always a pleasure to find a classic novel that keeps me engaged right from the beginning. I loved the characters in this, and found the many political, religious, and philisopical debates more interesting than I expected. Highly recommend for any Victorian literature fans or any one who loves a Pride and Prejudice story.

Excellent audio book about the ways poetry, culture, and science influence each other. The biographies of the Romantic scientists read like real life romance novels, and I have been unable to stop thinking about the ideas in this book.

Found this investigation of climate change from the perspective of those profiting full of new and I interesting things to think about. I also appreciated that it was not a book about villians and heros, but about facts and stories. Would love to read more like it. Any recommendations for books about climate change from a new angle?

This is the third book by Dr. Ariely that I have found fascinating. His writing has a lot of humor for an academic study on cheating. The narrator of his audiobooks, Simon Jones,​ is also fantastic.

⭐⭐⭐Part memoir, part collection of blog posts/ essays, part business book this was a real look into the life of Tony Hsieh and the history of Zappos.com. While often kind of off topic compared to other business books, the honesty in the many stories of success and failure really drove home the point Hsieh was making about finding a purpose. I found this book fun and a little weird, which I think was the point.

I love a good behavioral economics study, and this book was full of great academic research paired with personal stories. It includes more reflection from the author's life, which I enjoyed. An excellent follow up to Predictably Irrational and a five star narrator on the audio book.

#Riotgrams I remember reading Frankenstein in high school because I had never hated a character with as much passion as I hated Dr. Victor Frankenstein. Never the less, I loved the book and he is one of my #favvillains.

This book is my comfort read and my #mostreread book since I was a child.

While I loved Khalid and Shahrzad, it was the setting that made this story pop for me. Set in a fantasy world inspired by Persia, the story had a rich backdrop peppered with words and elements from Persian and Islamic culture. What I love about fantasy is the chance to explore new worlds, and with great #diversereads like this one, those worlds are so much more interesting.

Had an excellent reading month. I read a lot more than usual thanks to breaks and reading more romance. Loved Janet Evanovich on audio and finally starting a new Rick Riordan series. Both The Wrath and the Dawn and Of Fire and Stars were #ownvoices fantasy novels that were generally lots of fun to read during the diverse-a-thon. All in all a fun month of books.

Started a new habit walking along the river and listening to audiobooks. Lovely setting. This one has plenty of interesting facts, but the overall structure and premise haven't enthralled me.

3🌟/5 Honestly, I thought the plot of this novel was its strong suit. When the main characters get married in the first chapter, you know things are going to be interesting. But their growth individually and as a couple made me so happy and I really did find the story difficult to put down once the plot got rolling. Definitely a fun time. #romatsy

Gruff, veteran Scotsman with a heart of gold needs to improve his manners to survive the London season. Visually impaired, redheaded society lady needs a friend to help her out of a past that is threatening her.
The plot moved along well, the chemistry was good, but the supporting characters lacked for me.

Another excellent book about the seafood industry by Greenberg. 🐟 His writing is compelling and he crafts a persuasive appeal for the environment and American seafood without depressing the reader.
