The Wrath and the Dawn
The Wrath and the Dawn | Rene Ahdieh
A sumptuous and epically told love story inspired by A Thousand and One NightsEvery dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazis wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . shes falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend. She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

Well, that was disappointing, especially after I‘d heard such great things about this book. I found the storyline to be underdeveloped and the characters too lightly drawn. A shame as this retelling had tons of potential. I‘ll be skipping book two. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was sadly disappointed with this book. I loved the idea and was looking forward to it. The descriptive writing was beautiful but the plot was really weak. The story just didn‘t flow well at all. It was a bit choppy and sometimes didn‘t make any sense. I found it a little frustrating.

I really enjoyed this book! The setting, the characters and the plot all caught my attention for good reasons. I'm finally out of my reading slump, and I have this to thank for it. Normally I'm not a romance person, nor do I enjoy love triangles, but I didn't mind too much in this case. I'm very excited to read the sequel!

I absolutely loved this book! I‘ll admit that I felt it was a little slow in the beginning but I powered through and this is easily one of my favorites. The characters, setting and plot was just fantastic and the story was paced very well. I‘ve got the second book for this series sitting on my bookshelf and I can‘t wait to devour it. 🙂

Retelling of the Arabian Nights.

Not what I expected, but an enjoyable read. I wish there were more tales: they‘re perfect. The writing is usually good, BUT the repetition of a character‘s name in the space of a few sentences is sometimes ridiculous. The end is good - I look forward to reading the sequel.

Wow, this book was so good. I didn‘t really know what to expect when I was reading, as I didn‘t know the original tales. I don‘t think it matters if you know them or not, this is a fantastic, conflicting, emotional deep love story. I have to pick up the next book!

I really liked the courtship aspect of the book. Watching Khalid and Shazi fall in love while trying to deny their feelings was really interesting. The book alternates their story with the story of Tariq, Shazi‘s old boyfriend who is out to rescue her and bring down Khalid. I could have done without so much political intrigue. The romance and the look at life in the palace is enough for me.

Love this cover 😍

Freespirit That's a stunning cover! 10mo

I love 1,001 Nights. I do not love YA love triangles, which made this retelling hard to stomach. The imagery was beautiful, the characters flat. However, the last part of the book was just good enough that I think I‘ll read the sequel.

I hope the constant eye flicking and flickering every other page is not present in the next one.🙄

Weaponxgirl I just couldn‘t get past the idea that I was reading Stockholm feeling as a romance and it really infuriated me. I may not be a ya or romance reader. 10mo
4thhouseontheleft @Weaponxgirl I feel that way too! 10mo
Weaponxgirl @4thhouseontheleft well that does make me feel better! I thought I was just being a Debbie downer 10mo
AlaMich The eye-flicking!! 😆 I read a book once—which shall remain nameless—in which the author repeatedly described how people were blinking. “She blinked slowly, he blinked rapidly.” Over and over. It was the worst. 10mo
4thhouseontheleft Oh, and I think this also counts for #seriesread, if duologies count as a series. @TheSpineView 10mo
Cinfhen Ha @AlaMich that sounds infuriating 😂😂I cant read YA for the reasons you mention, Alisia. Great job on finishing both book & prompt 💚 10mo
4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen I‘ve found a lot of YA books I really enjoy that don‘t involve exasperating love plots. But I usually avoid anything clearly marketed as a love story, both for YA and adult fiction. 10mo

4thhouseontheleft @ephemeralwaltz @Megabooks Thanks! @christine For the version I had today, I actually used the Lotus GF Ramen, and added extra miso into it. Today‘s bowl also had 2 big handfuls of shredded cabbage/Brussels sprouts/kale, and a few small meatballs. 10mo

225 pages left in The Leopard
20 pages left in Co-Active Coaching
And I would like to at least start my #Booked2019 #fairytaleretelling pick by the end of the day.

I feel like I have a sinus infection brewing, and no other plans. Can I do it? 📚 ☕️

MarriedtoMrT Do you like Co-active Coaching? Our organization is actively moving to a coaching development model and it‘s something I personally believe in and want to do but could use some good guidelines and tips to help me mentally make a shift. 10mo
4thhouseontheleft @MarriedtoMrT I think it would be a great book to help with those purposes! It contains a lot of examples and advice for using coaching in a business or organizational setting, as long as you get the most recent 4th edition. I‘m going for life coaching certification, and it is one of my assigned books. So far, it has been the most useful one. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ 10mo
4thhouseontheleft There is one part that is no longer accepted by the ICF (accrediting body) as good coaching practice, but that section - on intruding or interrupting - is only 1/2 page. 10mo
tracey38 Hope you aren't getting sick! My sinuses are wrecking havoc with me right now due to the weather. Hate it! 10mo

I 💜 fairy tale retellings, and have quite a few on my shelves waiting to be read, so this is a #Booked2019 prompt I could fill a few times over! So many to choose from!

Here are some of my recommendations, which cover retellings of Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Snow White, Baba Yaga, Alice in Wonderland, and 1,001 Nights. I plan on reading the tagged book.

Which #fairytaleretelling do you recommend?

4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage I took Maya and a friend to see it when she had off on Veteran‘s Day. It‘s more a retelling than a remake of the ballet, but I liked it! 12mo
