Who would want to harm Discworld's most beloved icon? Very few things are held sacred in this twisted, corrupt, heartless -- and oddly familiar -- universe, but the Hogfather is one of them. Yet here it is, Hogswatchnight, that most joyous and acquisitive of times, and the jolly old, red-suited gift-giver has vanished without a trace. And there's something shady going on involving an uncommonly psychotic member of the Assassins' Guild and certain representatives of Ankh-Morpork's rather extensive criminal element. Suddenly Discworld's entire myth system is unraveling at an alarming rate. Drastic measures must be taken, which is why Death himself is taking up the reins of the fat man's vacated sleigh . . . which, in turn, has Death's level-headed granddaughter, Susan, racing to unravel the nasty, humbuggian mess before the holiday season goes straight to hell and takes everyone along with it.

Well there was certainly a lot of this story I did not remember! I'm maintaining my earlier conclusion regarding stories that feature the Discworld's Death, there's something so wistful about his relationship to humanity, it always makes me a little sad. One could argue that this is indeed an appropriate spooky time read, despite the Christmas/pagan winter festival vibes, due largely to Mr. Teatime's exceptionally creepy involvement. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I do love how much the book examines the pagan origins versus the optimistic/'true' meaning of Christmas-analog versus the more cynical/commercial aspects. And then there's poor Albert trying to coach Death on economics and human pride. The larger discussion of belief, not necessarily as an examination of faith/religion, but rather how humanity needs to believe in things to help them come into being, how that can be a powerful force, 1w
Robotswithpersonality 3/? it feels like a good reminder about our potential. What I totally forgot? The whole supporting cast of zany characters that pop up related to that consideration of belief and how much fun the wizards are when they're not including Rincewind. 1w
Robotswithpersonality 4/5 I realize now this is NOT the first appearance of Susan Sto Helit, though for her moments with the fire poker alone, it may well be my favourite. I'm officially rereading her books backward having done Thief of Time and now Hogfather, it will be Soul Music next. Whoops! 💁🏼‍♂️ 1w
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 ⚠️I think between Banjo and Teatime and the beggar trio, someone could probably write a whole essay on the positive vs negative vs oversimplified/attempted positive representation of mental health/ ableism seen in this book, but it won't be me. 1w

When the Hogfather disappears, Death steps in to make sure all the presents are delivered to all the good little boys and girls, which sets off a series of madness that Death‘s granddaughter sets out to fix with the help of the god of hangovers, a sassy raven, and the Death of mice.
I nearly DNF but once I leaned into the ridiculousness, I really enjoyed it.

When the Disc‘s Santa Claus equivalent disappears under mysterious circumstances, Death steps in to fill his boots, while his granddaughter Susan investigates.

Every year. Every year I listen or read to this story, and ever year this book breaks me a little and puts me back together. Glorious puns, all while talking about what makes us human, and the power of belief and stories and kindness. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

I have really been enjoying this book so far. It reminds me of a retelling of The Nightmare Before Christmas. But instead of Jack stepping in for Santa, we have Death. In classic Pratchett style, we also have a whole cast of other crazy characters who get into all kinds of odd and fantastical antics. And it reads fast. Such a great choice for the end of the year!!

Sir Pterry is almost always a winner, and this one was basically an instant classic for me. I think I'd make it my annual Christmas read if I owned a physical copy - Discworld's footnotes always work better for me in paper form. The movie isn't a bad adaptation either, and it's obviously a labor of love, which is the best kind of film.

Faranae @TheBookHippie He was a real gift to the world. The Discworld is massive, but Hogfather is a great one to start with! Most of the books are written so you don't really need to know any of the other books, and there are little sub-series within it (like Watch or Witches). 11mo

Since @The_Penniless_Author (who has a new book, True North, just published!) used HHGTTG, I‘ll go with Discworld, which has soooo many unusually named characters. I opted for the tagged (weird/unusual book title) that features 5 criminals Chickenwire, Medium Dave Lilywhite, Banjo Lilywhite, Catseye, & Peachy who work for Mr. Jonathan Teatime (who insists his name is pronounced teh-ah-tim-eh and not like the afternoon meal).

The_Penniless_Author Ha, Discworld was my second choice! 1y

I've lost count of how many times I've read Hogfather - it's my favorite of the Discworld books and I read it every December. This year, I'm listening to the new audio version narrated by Sian Clifford, with Bill Nighy reading the footnotes and Peter Serafinowicz as DEATH. 💀 💀 💀

The ebook's on sale right now, too for $1.99

willaful Oh, that audiobook sounds wonderful!

My husband tried this one as a read aloud -- he could be a professional narrator, he's so good -- but my daughter couldn't seem to get Gaiman's humor. :-(
2y
Aimeesue @willaful Awwww! Pratchett's humor can take getting used to - it's so dry! The audio I really good! 2y
willaful D'oh! How did I type Gaiman?! I'm not even a fan. 😖 2y

The Hogfather has disappeared on the Eve of Hogswatch. What‘s to be done? Death steps in to keep the belief alive, & Susan is as awesome as always.

I love Susan so much. She is so practical and stubborn. And Death. Death looking at the presents for rich kids vs poor kids, Death looking at the Little Match Girl, Death being told “that‘s life” and deciding “no, not tonight” always brings me to tears. In my top 3 Pratchett books. Period. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

despite part of the movie adaptation boring me significantly, this was a pretty fun read (and I reminder that I need to read Death's subseries sooner rather than later). I was kind of surprised to see that Death taking over the role of the Hogfather is only a small part of the book, with weird amounts of focus given to the archchancellor instead? I do think Susan is pretty darned cool though.

I‘ll admit, this one took awhile to get me sucked into the story, lots of separate stories in the beginning and it wasn‘t until they started to come together and interrelated a bit more that it got really page turning for me. Loved all the poking at and examining Christmas and traditions and belief...and Susan is really growing on me as a character.

Probably Pratchett‘s most rememberable creation is when Death takes over the Hogfather‘s job, jolly red coat, beard, pillow case and HO HO HO included. Since he is busy, it falls to his granddaughter, Susan, to actually rescue the Hogfather. We have hilarious household gods like the “oh god” of Hangovers and the Cheearful Fairy; I loved Hex and the error messages; overall fun romp and a treatise on belief and humanity. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think that rubs me the wrong way about Susan is her presumptiveness. She knows, say, that Death doesn't keep pets, but she also refuses to talk to him for years at a time and mostly pretends that they aren't connected at all - so how do you know what he does and doesn't do?!
Also, every one of these Susan stories make me dislike Mort the character more and more.
