I loved the plot — it pushed Leda to the center with some really great twists. But she & Rylin were the only ones I cared about, so it was annoying that Rylin‘s story had barely anything to do with the main one, & thus was often shunted aside. I couldn‘t stand Avery, whose self-centered whinging grew more obnoxious over the course of the series. Still, this book had some great romance & high stakes! A strong finale to an intriguing trilogy. ★★★☆☆.

The plot was intriguing, & moved at a better pace than the last one. I was glad to see some characters of color get more nuance & dynamic story arcs, but there were still some slightly problematic aspects of representation in the world as a whole. And, as with most books that have six different POVs, I found myself caring only about two, maybe three, of the characters at most. An interesting, though flawed, follow-up. ★★★☆☆.

This really is a book about teenagers — insecure, impulsive, self-centered, hormonal teenagers who have too much money & time. Now, some readers would hate that, but to me it was fun! I found these characters relatable to my own teenage self, though the representation of marginalized folk needs improvement. The writing was good, but the plot moved slowly, & I‘m never a huge fan of revolving POVs. Still, I‘m curious to see where it goes next. ★★★☆☆

Wow. Wow wow wow. The finale to Jude & Cardan‘s story was everything I‘d hoped it would be, & more. The intrigue & battles they engaged in kept me riveted, even as their internal struggles made me sigh when they were vulnerable, yell when they were stubborn, & grin if they triumphed. This story is a stunning example of a truly dark fairytale: full of devious heroines & kindly villains, twisted & mesmerizing all at once. ★★★★★.

I‘ve been trying to review this book all day, but so far all I can seem to come up with is mental keyboard-smashing — which should tell you just how utterly spellbinding & heart-wrenching this book is, even on a second read. I‘m almost sad we‘re on the 3rd book, because then it‘ll have to end 😭. ★★★★★.

I thought this would be another one of those whimsical tales about a lonely girl who loves to read. But this book doesn‘t just glorify books & stories. It gives us a whole new lexicon with which we can glorify books & stories ourselves, along with one of the most in-depth historical contexts I‘ve ever seen. So despite some faults, the luscious prose & lively narration kept me glued to my chair, sighing with delight. 1st for 2020! ★★★★☆.

Happy New Year, Littens! New year, new #bujo spread for my books 🥰. This year‘s reading goals:

• read 70 books

(she says, knowing perfectly well she‘s somehow never in the mood for nonfiction lol)

What are your reading goals, fam?

I was really looking forward to this book, but it just didn‘t hit the mark. The characters were cute, & the premise had a lot of promise. The writing, however, was predictable & rather dull. I found myself skimming passages because I just didn‘t care that much about what was happening, which is a shame. Also, the hero & heroine‘s dilemma didn‘t seem that hard to get over, & indeed was rather easily taken care of in the last chapter. ★★½

Loved this! 1) it was set almost at the dawn of the Edwardian era, rather than your typical regency period, so different fashion, technology, & politics to play with. 2) the characters were witty & relatable af, with amazing chemistry that sizzled through the page. 3) The tongue-in-cheek hilarity I love about the romance genre really shone in the writing. My only complaint is the pacing felt rushed at the end. ★★★★☆.

I went into this story with lukewarm feelings, & lukewarm was where it stayed. This book reads like a walk in the park with friends on a spring day — the conversation is fun, the sun feels warm, the grass feels soft under your feet. It‘s nice, & that‘s pretty much it. There‘s no tension, no clouds, & nothing that really captures your undivided attention — which, for a walk on a spring day, is a good thing, but less so in a romance story. ★★½.

#finishedreading | This was a cute sequel to “Bewitching.” The characters were adorable — especially Letty, who I could relate to a lot, & whose scrapes made you laugh. The chemistry between her & Richard were well done, if a tiny bit predictable. The plot, however, meandered a lot, so that the ending was very rushed. And, yes, I don‘t mind prose that is sprinkled liberally with sugar, but I did wince a bit at some extra-purpled phrases. ★★★☆☆.

Oh, this was as delightful & adorable as I remember it! The tv show “Bewitched” meets regency romance in this funny, adorable story of a duke who decides to marry the next woman he sees, finds out afterwards that she‘s a witch, & that his life will never be boring again. The writing was lovely (though I could do without a couple of “dreamy”s) & the characters were laugh-out-loud fun. Perfect for a quick, sweet read on a rainy day. ★★★★☆.

I‘m always impressed with stand-alones that also include a believable slow-burn romance, & this one is does it extremely well. The blossoming relationship between Casiopea & Hun-Kamé is perfectly paced alongside a dark, beautifully constructed fairytale plot involving gods, demons, & more. Even more impressive, the ending stayed true to the characters & the story, & left me feeling curiously satisfied and unsatisfied all at once. ★★★★☆.

First of all, the writing is damn good. A loving attention to craft + world building that‘s positively decadent. I did sometimes feel like the pacing was sacrificed for the setting. That could just be me though, since I‘m from the dominant culture being described in the story & therefore don‘t need detailed explanations of holiday rituals etc. A stunning, rich fairytale that centers women and explores the nuanced bonds of sisterhood. ★★★★☆.

Y‘all, I tried. But there is only one author who has successfully used incorrect spelling and bad grammar to narrate the story in order to get us inside a character‘s head. This was NOT IT. The lack of quotation marks, the mangling of simple words, etc. was completely maddening — even more so when the author started breaking her own “rules”. It constantly distracted me from the actual story — one that I might have liked, if it were told better.

Still as riveting as the first time I read it! What I love most about this book is that Bardugo takes larger-than-life characters & makes them intimately human. Finished the rest of this series in a whirlwind over the weekend! It seriously got better & better with each book. While the plot got bogged down in the third book, with a lot of “let‘s sit around for several chapters & explain how the magic works,” the action in the other chapters kept me reading for more — especially Chelsie‘s story, since she is my forever favorite. If you want a hilarious, exciting feel-good fantasy, this one‘s for you! ★★★★☆.

That was really fun! A fantastic setting, a cool plot, & writing that made me laugh out loud from its wit makes for a charming read. The main characters were harder to grasp — especially Julius, who‘s main MO is to not have a personality in the first place, so you end up paying more attention to the outrageously, flamboyantly deadly side characters instead. Which isn‘t exactly a chore, since their antics had you gasping, laughing or both! ★★★★☆.
