This is one of the bedtime stories my parents would read me as a little girl. So of course I had to get it for my book collection 😇

This book is so beautifully illustrated. The pictures are so life-like, and the theme of the story is really great too: just because you are beautiful does not mean you shouldn‘t be kind; kindness is more important than how beautiful you are.

Great book to introduce diversity and be appreciative of other cultures. Great theme that can teach others the importance of kindness.

Caldecott honor. 1987. Picturebook. Beautifully imaged story that shows diversity of cultures. Theme is how being kind will bring you farther in life. Two sisters that are opposites- one is kind and polite, the other is rude and angry. From the point of view of a narrator watching the story.

A piece of traditional literature (TL), this book was an amazing read and a great addition to all classrooms. This African tale has won the Caldecott Honor, Boston Globe Horn, and the Corbett‘s Scott King award. It tells a story of two beautiful sisters who have been called upon by the king to decide who he will marry. The king presents his self in many different ways throughout the story to see who is beautiful inside and out.

An absolutely charming fable, well worth the read. The art is stunning. Definitely recommended.

My 7yo daughter loves this book. Beautifully illustrated, wonderfully told, and a fresh bedtime story with a great lesson.

two daughters that have gone into the city with the hopes of marrying
the King. On the way into the city, the girls are tested by the King
who disguises himself in many different forms and only one passes the
test and eventually becomes the Queen and the other sister becomes a
servant.

This Caldecott Award Winner focuses on sisters that must pass a series of tests to be considered a beautiful & worthy wife for the Great King. This was a favorite birthday president from my childhood--a gift from my Great Aunt Patty who sent me overstock books from her volunteer work at the library.
