I Yam a Donkey! | Cece Bell
post image
Pickpick

I Yam A Donkey is a cute book about misunderstandings and meaning. The yam is trying to teach the donkey the proper way to say that he is a donkey. This book has great content for teaching phonemes. This book would definitely be used for the lower levels of elementary, but I think it would definitely be a hit! #UCFLAE3414SP20

Ryan_R I love this link! It integrates art within the story and goes beyond the English lesson

I was very excited to read this book because it was a Caldecott winner, however after reading it I‘m surprised it was even nominated. I thought the book was lacking a lot. The moral of the story was the best part, but I would never use this content in my class. I was disappointed, unfortunately. #UCF3414SP20

LeahH It‘s funny you posted this book. I use to read it over and over again to my mom when I was little. It wasn‘t the best book, but bc I had basically memorized the whole thing, I thought I was the best reader haha!! 4y
MaddyJ I used to love this story as a kid!! This was my absolutely favorite! 4y
Ryan_R https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/frog-and-toad-... Scholastic has a great activity to go along with this reading! 4y
DrSpalding This is a very honest post! This book has a very interesting past and considering the time frame that it one, it was quite controversial. Scholastic is always an excellent resource. Be sure to always include universal design and English learner strategies. (edited) 4y

This Newberry award winner will win over your heart. Opal was abandoned by her mother and is now living in Florida with her father. She finds a hyper dog and befriends him right away. The two meet very interesting people throughout the town and realize the value of a community. This is an absolutely wonderful book! Loved it! #UCFLAE3414SP20

HappyMaddy I am reading this right now with my 2nd graders! I remember reading it in my elementary classes. I think it‘s a great idea to show the movie as another form of media presentation. 4y
MaddyJ My favorite author!!! I love Kate dicamillo. Now I want to read the book and watch the movie again 4y
ShardaeP I remember watching this movie with my grandma and I cried when Winn-Dixie got lost! 4y

Tabitha_H Defiantly a classic and students love these books. Perfect for a RA or IR. 4y

I was SO excited when I finally found poetry written about diversity and something that many students should learn at an early age. The famous question of “can I touch your hair” gets asked to many black children all the time. This book addresses differences between people and shows us the importance of diversity and acceptance. Absolutely loved this book! #UCFLAE3414SP20

Brennap Oooh this looks like a great book to talk about different hot topics in the classroom! Definitely will stack! 4y

My mom was a teacher and she always loved reading this book to her kids on the first day of class. It taught them respect for their teacher and was also a lighthearted story/joke. This book reminds me of many other classic stories as well. I think kids will be able to use text to world connections when they finish reading it.

Ryan_R https://www.audible.com/pd/Miss-Nelson-is-Missing-Audiobook/B002V0AH7S Audiable has a great adaptation of this story! Check it out! 4y
DrSpalding I listen to Audible books consistently! This is an excellent idea. If you were to align universal design and English learner strategies, you would see that audiobooks definitely assist students with special needs and English learners. 4y

This book should be taught in every school, in my opinion! It demonstrates the impact a teacher can make, but it also shows kids that they can do anything if someone believes in them. The concept of thinking you‘re awful at something then having one person come along and complimenting you, changing your entire mindset is a phenomenal message. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Camilla Cream loves lima beans! Her friends, however, do not. When she starts to receive judgement about liking them, she decides to no longer eat them. Suddenly, she wakes up with thick colorful stripes on her body! What could possibly cure this?!? This book is great to teach kids about inclusion and acceptance. It also highlights that being different is okay because that‘s what makes you, you! #UCFLAE3414SP20

DrSpalding Scholastic is an excellent resource. This makes for a good storytelling as well! You have a couple of David Shannon books posted that would make a good author study in your future classroom. 4y

This very special house was built out of love care in an area where it was able to see everything going on. Suddenly, there‘s one change followed by another and then another. Before long the house is sad and doesn‘t hardly recognize where it is. Soon something big happens that changes the house‘s life forever. This book is great to teach about change and adaptation. It can also be used to teach about innovation.

Harold and the Purple Crayon | Crockett Johnson

Harold and the Purple Crayon takes readers through a journey of a toddler who‘s magically using this purple crayon to create and draw stuff. This leads him through many adventures! I actually remember this book being read to me many many many years ago by a teacher who then challenged us to draw with a purple crayon. I think teachers could even take it a step further and have students close their eyes and draw the imagery that comes to mind!

Keishla.O This book looks really interesting. I love the open possibilities of what the child can create with his purple crayon and where that may take the story! It kind of reminds me of that Spongebob episode with the big pencil lol 4y

A Christmas classic! This Caldecott winner takes readers through an incredible journey on Christmas Eve. Readers follow a boy, who struggles believing in Santa Clause, all the way to the North Pole where he discovers Santa‘s workshop. A Very Special Critter | Mercer Mayer, Gina Mayer

This book is very near and dear to my heart and will be the book I use for my read aloud. The Little Critter series continues when he meets Alex, a critter in a wheelchair. Many of the students are Nervous because they have never seen someone in a wheelchair before. Throughout this book they find that there are actually way more things they have in common than what makes them different! #UCFLAE3414SP20

Ryan_R This link sends you to the profile of the author and shows you all of the books within the series. It also offers options for audio books. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Browse/Search:reading%20a-z%20mysteries 4y
Ryan_R ESOL strategy 32 (using pairs for learning) is great for this book because the entire reading happens between Alex and The Special Critter! ULD 3.2 is highlighting the relationships within the book and applying them to the real work. This book is great for that because it‘s all about acceptance! 4y
Brennap Aw I love the message in this story, its so important for inclusion! 4y
DrSpalding Yes, you added a universal design principle. This book is all about acceptance and we need a variety of books that represent a variety of people, in our classroom libraries. Books as windows! 4y

This picture shows The Lucky Lottery with my not-so-lucky lottery ticket. This book follows 3 friends Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose on their investigation when someone steals a winnings lottery ticket from Lucky O‘Leary‘s home. They‘re racing against the clock because if they don‘t find it in time, Lucky won‘t be able to claim the prize. This book is great for students who are fans of the series and want to read more about Jack, Ruby Rose, and Dink.

Ryan_R If students are really into this series, this list of detective A-Z work will surely be intriguing to them. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Browse/Search:reading%20a-z%20mysteries 4y
Ryan_R UDL 5.1, using different media to understand can be used by the activities listed above. It also can be viewed in the sense of looking through the characters perspectives. This novel takes place in 1963, AKA a turning point in American history. The civil rights movement was sweeping the nation, especially in the south. This book follows The Watson‘s on their road trip to the south to visit their grandmother. The family encounters exactly what you might expect, but what the lesson they leave with is more powerful. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Ryan_R This is a great resource that helps students note the characters and their differences. https://bookunitsteacher.com/wp/?p=3897 4y
Ryan_R ESOL tip number 42 definitely would help students. Having a timeline of US events and events happening in the book would help show where the family is in relation. UDL 3.1 is needed to provide the history background for this book! 4y
DrSpalding I like how you have included social studies and of course having a timeline assist students and understanding chronology. English learner 42 and universal design principle 3.1 are appropriate. 4y

If you are an upper elementary school teacher in south Florida, this book is for you! Merci is entering into middle school with a rocky home and friend life. She‘s going through the awkward phase that every middle schooler encounters, but she has even more stress added on compared to her classmates. Taking place in south Florida, this book covers a lot of good content that students should be exposed to before their transition to middle school.

Ryan_R I think by using ESOL strategy 12, students would be able to demonstrate their own Spanish knowledge during the parts of the book that included Spanish terms. UDL 2.1 should be used to clear up vocabulary students might not be familiar with. 4y
Ryan_R https://www.audible.com/pd/Merci-Suarez-Changes-Gears-Audiobook/1978644558 The audiable for this book is a great resource for students and teachers! I highly recommend it! #UCFLAE3414SP20 4y

Wonder is wonderful book about social acceptance and judgement. I think this book is a must read for all students in the upper elementary levels. Auggie is born with a facial deformity and has never attended public school. His parents think that 7th grade is the perfect time to send him to school because everyone is facing the new environment together. This book follows Auggie‘s journey of self confidence and friendship.

Ryan_R https://wonderthebook.com/for-teachers This link comes directly from the book and provides teachers a bunch of great resources. This book is great for UDL (7.2) because students find this book very relatable and easy to make real world connections. Personally, I believe everyone can relate to at least one character in this book. Each character is so well written. 4y
Ryan_R ESOL Strategies 6 and 38 can be used for this book. Limiting the amount they have to read (38) will help them with their overall comprehension skills (6) 4y

Dream You‘ll Be is a wonderful picture book that illustrates different occupations. I would use this book as a RA and have a class conversation with lower grade levels about what students want to be when they grow up. This book also uses rhyming so a lesson could be made on that topic.

Ashley_B Your posts are all so creative! I‘ve never seen this book, thanks for sharing. 4y
Ryan_R https://www.eslkidstuff.com/lesson-plans/jobs.html This lesson incorporates the many jobs found within the book and suggests a game where students have to act out/guess what job is being performed. This would be fun for the whole class! 4y
Ryan_R For my lesson, UDL 1.3 could be used because students are transferring what they read in the book to physically acting out the jobs for their peers to see! 4y
LeahH Great idea to interact with the class about what students want to be when they grow up! Love this idea! It humors me when I ask students that question and they come up with some pretty crazy stuff about what they want to be. Gotta love their imagination 4y

The 2001 Caldecott winner, So You Want to Be President demonstrates what it is like to have one of the most glorified jobs in America. It highlights all of the benefits such as living in a big fancy White House, but it also talks about the negatives such as how stressful the job truly is. I think this book would be amazing to connect to a history lesson about elections and past presidents.

Ryan_R There are so many steps a candidate has take in order to become president. This lesson and game will help students see the hard work it takes to live in the White House. https://www.icivics.org/node/67038/resource?referer=node/39863&page_title=Politi... 4y

Big Words for Little People | Jamie Lee Curtis

Pickpick

The book Big Words for Little People is a wonderful book that exposes students to new and bigger words. This book is perfect for a teacher who wants to begin a word wall or for students to practice defying vocabulary terms. The Universal Design for this book would be (2.1) Clarifying vocabulary and symbols.

Ryan_R This book is great for RA because it provides discussions on new vocabulary words. The story also allows students to make text to world connections throughout the book. EL strategy #6 (a focus on comprehension) would be important for a book like this. Since the story is full of big words, students must be able to walk away from the lesson with accuracy and understanding as to what the words mean. 4y
