20 posts | 26 read | 46 to read
A tale of first love, bad theology and robot reincarnation in the Chinese afterlife. In the tenth court of hell, spirits wealthy enough to bribe the bureaucrats of the underworld can avoid both the torments of hell and the irreversible change of reincarnation. It's a comfortable undeath even for Siew Tsin. She didn't choose to be married to the richest man in hell, but she's reconciled. Until her husband brings home a new bride. Yonghua is an artificial woman crafted from terracotta -- but that's not all she is. What she is may change hell for good. Who she is will transform Siew Tsin. And as they grow closer, the mystery of Yonghua's creation will draw Siew Tsin into a conspiracy where the stakes are eternal life or a very final death.THE TERRACOTTA BRIDE is an 11,000-word standalone fantasy novelette.

This is my first experience with Zen Cho and I can‘t wait to read her other works. This short story was so intriguing in just ~40 pages, I immediately wanted to know more about the world and the characters within. Her interpretation of Hell from the mythology of Asian and Buddhist culture was a great setting for the story as well.

This is the melancholy story of Siew Tsin, who died young - and finds herself in the afterlife, married off to a rich old man, in the tenth court of hell.

Left to her own devices and almost completely ignored by the rest of the household - Siew Tsin‘s life is transformed by the arrival of a new wife, made of terracotta.

This is a short, beautifully described tale of self discovery and I think I enjoyed it more the second time round.

Sometimes, I really wish my kindle could do colour!!

I wish this story had been longer, I wanted to spend more time with Siew Tsin... this is a short, beautifully described tale of self discovery told from the point of view from a dead girl in the tenth court of hell... I‘m quite intrigued by stories featuring the Chinese afterlife... anyone have any recommendations?!

I picked this up last night, in need of something different, and am so glad I did.

Zen Cho weaved together a beautiful, ethereal tale of love, afterlife, and non-human spirits, based on Chinese mythology.

Plus that cover, absolutely stunning!

AlaMich I have this on my Kindle but haven't read it yet. I will love it up the TBR list now. 😊 (edited) 6y
JPeterson @AlaMich I really enjoyed it, and read it under an hour 👍 6y

Such a gorgeous cover to this one! I read this a little while ago but forgot to review it - it's a very well done novella about the afterlife and love.

Crisp dark novella, drawn from Chinese mythology, diving straight into the afterlife. The imagery is beautiful.

Isn't this cover beautiful? The story was too. Short, beautiful and fantastic (in both senses of the term). Can't wait to read more from her! I'm about to start her short story collection Spirits Abroad and read Sorcerer to the Crown soon as well. #diversebooks

How are you all holding up? Are you reading thick tomes or short novellas?

read_diverse_books I still haven't decided, but it's gonna be a lot of short books or novellas lol. Gotta fit in a diverse detective story too! 8y
earlgreyediting I'm also having some trouble deciding. 8y
WOCreads @read_diverse_books Yay novellas and comics are best!😁 Hope you'll enjoy Cosmic Callisto! 8y

I liked Spirits Abroad so much that I downloaded this novella as soon as I finished it. This would fit right in, although it is sadly pretty short and now my commute will be bereft of Cho.

This novella is gorgeous and fascinating and gave me emotions about reincarnating robots in love.
