Love a hard back. Don‘t get too many these days. I seem to be escaping into all things Scottish and mysterious. I enjoy her Karen Pirie books a lot. This was very good but it got a little tedious near the end when the mystery was unfolding. Well rounded ending. Though one bit did feel tacked on and I had to think hard to remember what she was talking about. Once again I feel myself becoming invested in the characters. Need to find out what happens

I watched the Karen Pirie series on TV so I‘ve decided to catch up on the books. I like the cold case angle in the series and how seemingly disconnected cases end up coming together. The audiobook was great except when the narrator attempted a bad Italian accent. I hope they make more of the show so I can see how they do this one.

This was my #DoubleSpin for July

Work has been idiotic so you know what that means! Thankfully Karen is actually the main character in this - the first entry gave me pause. And we got 2 convoluted mysteries for the price of one! 👍🏼

TrishB I have all this series on kindle but not read yet! 2y

Bonus queer author recommendation for #sundayfunday

How could I forget the Queen of Tartan Noir, Val McDermid? 🤦🏻‍♀️

BookmarkTavern This looks so interesting! Thank you for posting! 💙 (edited) 2y
Susanita @ozma.of.oz I don‘t know if the novel is queer, but the author is. She‘s another good follow on Twitter. 2y

First book finished for #Bookspin and second book finished for #24B4Monday, now at 12 hours

Another cold case, which is very well written. However I do feel it was longer than it needed to be. Great characters though and sone great plotting. I look forward to continuing the series, especially fir the character development.

The second installment in the DI Karen Pirie series, which is my favourite of McDermid‘s series. It‘s set in Fife and Pirie is a down-to-earth, realistic character. Spoilers for the first book in this series, so if you are a read-in-order person, read The Distant Echo first.

Starting with book 2 of a series makes me a little twitchy but it was available on RBDigital from the library and I needed a palate cleanser. Such an enjoyable and satisfying police procedural. Val McDermid is so reliable. 4 stars.

The book couldn‘t wow me. 🤷🏽‍♀️ The many changes in time (1984, 2007) and place (Scotland, Italy) made it hard to follow the plot. (Which might not only be a problem in audiobooks.)

Only after two hours I was able to have a feeling for the story and to distinguish between the persons. After that it was entertaining but all in all nothing that will leave a mark in me. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Maybe I‘m not supposed to be Val McDermid‘s audience.

Being sick shortly before Christmas is kind of awful – but … it allows me to proceed considerably with my audiobook. 🤧

Continuation at hour 4,5 from 7,5.

Guess who fell sick on the first day of her Christmas 🎄 leave. 😢

🤧🧣🥶

I‘m really sad. But I will take some rest 🛋 while listening to my audiobook.

julesG Get well soon! It used to be like that for me, every damn year. As soon as I had finished the last day of work before Christmas, I fell ill. 6y
Buechersuechtling Thank you. 😘 Seems that I am lucky and just got a cold instead of a flu. But I feel rotten anyway. 6y

The good thing about being caught in a two hour traffic jam today was that I finally had time to listen to this audiobook for 1,5 hours en bloc and not only (as I did the past few days) 10 minutes before falling asleep.

Listening in one piece definitely is better for the understanding of the story because there are two parallel plots, lots of different people and numerous time jumps that make it difficult to hear the story in small bites.

Tada-da-daa‼️ My new audiobook. After I finished „Echo einer Winternacht“ I read everywhere that it shall not be one of her best books (which I can‘t judge because it was the first book I read from her but I also felt it wasn‘t very good) and that this one should be much better. So I grabbed it as I saw it being available this morning in my library.

Vall McDermid deftly weaves layered plotlines back and forth from Scotland to Italy, current day to 20 some years prior as DI Karen Pirie takes on a cold case investigation.

I like Val McDermid. I like crime thrillers. Nothing not to like really. These books are my comfort food.

I'm usually a big McDermid fan but this was fairly weak by her standards. Two stories that eventually come together but a rushed and unsatisfactory conclusion. Pity.

Val Macdermid is a prolific crime writer whose books never fail to entertain. This novel finds her detective karen pirie investigating two crimes that focus on the 1984 miners strike. Well plotted and very satisfying.

I decided to read this in Scotland since it is largely set there. Overall, it's just an average mystery. It bounces around in time with the mining strike of 1984 playing a role, which is interesting. Fun for the Scottish setting and I'll probably try another of her books, but I think Kathy Reichs is better.
