Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada
Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada: y, Cien sonetos de amor | Pablo Neruda
19 posts | 9 read | 3 to read

Of course this is a pick! Whatever edition or language, I love these poems!!!
That said, this edition has a concise prologue discussing this work and it's place in Neruda's canon. It also contains notes in the back of the various manuscripts used and differences found in those texts (my inner geek is squealing with excitement!)

llwheeler Love notes on mss.! 6y
DocBrown You seemed to have digested this, one savory morsel at a time. Never have I seen someone go through a book so leisurely and indulgently. I think there‘s a lesson here for all of us — or at least for me. I usually listen to my audiobooks on 2x because I get bored at speeds any slower than that. 6y
Andrea4 @mdhughes72 I find poetry hard to power through. It's easy to do because often they are short but I find that means I'm not digesting it, understanding it fully, or giving it the dedication it merits. There is an entire story in one poem so I try to remember that. I listen to audiobooks faster too but 1.5 is tops unless the narrator is very slow. 1.25 seems to be my happy place. 6y

llwheeler I got my workout shoveling the driveway this morning! It's raining here now though, ugh. Hoping it doesn't get too icy. Feel better soon! Hope the cabin fever doesn't drive you too crazy 6y
Andrea4 @llwheeler yea I saw the rain coming. Ugh. Could the weather just stabilize?! If it does freeze we could be having one of those days where they decide to close shit half way through the day, screwing everyone who went to work/school over! 6y
llwheeler @Andrea4 yeah there is a giant puddle forming at the end of my driveway that is making me quite nervous for when Geoff gets home from work... but hey if it does freeze maybe we can test out your new skates there! 🤣 6y
Andrea4 @llwheeler hahaha! Also...I may have shoveled my patio and sidewalk 🤦â€â™€ï¸ maybe not the greatest idea when one is sick but I was going stir crazy! 6y
llwheeler @Andrea4 Lol, hope you're feeling okay after doing it 6y

💔💔💔💔💔
...
I can write the saddest verses tonight.
I loved her, and for a time she loved me too.

Through nights like this one I held her in my arms.
I kissed her so many times beneath the infinite sky.

She loved me, and at times I loved her too.
How could one not love her great, still eyes.

...

(Do yourself a favour and find this poem and read it!)

(Full poem in picture, last stanza translated)

In the net of my music you are caught, my love,
And my nets of music are as wide as the sky.
My soul is born at the shore of your eyes of mourning.
In your eyes of mourning begins the land of dreams.

Pretty sure #NerudaEveryDay should exist.

From the mountains I will bring you happy flowers, copihues, dark hazelnuts, and rustic baskets of kisses.

I want to do with you
What the spring does with the cherry trees.

Between the lips and the voice, something dies.
Something with the wings of a bird, something of anguish and oblivion.
Just like the nets that do not hold the water.
My poppet, but a few drops remain trembling.
Nevertheless, something sings among these fleeting words.
Something sings, something rises to my eager mouth.

For your freedom my wings suffice.
From my mouth it will reach up to heaven
That which was asleep above your soul.

💗💔💗💔💗💔💗
Love me, companion. Don't abandon me. Follow me.
Follow me, companion, on this wave of anguish.

But my words become stained with your love.
You occupy everything, you occupy everything.

I am making an infinite necklace from them all
For your white hands, smooth like grapes.

So that you hear them as I want you to hear me.

Missed yesterday, though my thoughts were on Chile and mi abuelito. It was the anniversary of his passing yesterday and I miss him terribly.
Voy a encontrarte, abuelito, en nuestros libros. Te amo 💜

I finished this one in March, and then didn't read ANYTHING until last week. Between 20 weeks of morning sickness and 2 weeks of bed rest, I didn't have the mental/emotional energy for reading or talking about books (except to the kids; I prioritized reading to them 😊). I'd never experienced any kind of book slump, i.e., coma like that before. BUT I'm finally back and excited to see all of you #Littens! I missed you!

Laura317 Glad you survived the morning sickness and feel better to come back to Litsy. 7y

Translation: Innumerable heart of the wind/ beating above our love-filled silence./ Humming among the trees, orchestral and divine,/ like a language full of wars and songs.

When I get exhausted, I've found that it helps to take a #poetrybreak for my mental health. Since it's almost Valentine's Day and this has been on my #tbr for awhile, I decided to read some Pablo Neruda for the first time. I'm loving the imagery so far.
