Shelley: Poems
Shelley: Poems | Percy Bysshe Shelley
6 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was perhaps the most intellectually adventurous of the great Romantic poets. A classicist, a headlong visionary, a social radical, and a poet of serene artistry with a lyric touch second to none, Shelley personified the richly various and contradictory energies of his time. This compact yet comprehensive collection showcases all the extraordinary facets of Shelley s art. From his most famous lyrical poems ( Ozymandias, The Cloud ) to his political and philosophical works ( The Mask of Anarchy, Hymn to Intellectual Beauty ) to excerpts from his remarkable dramatic and narrative verses ( Alastor, Prometheus Unbound ), Shelley s words gave voice to English romanticism's deepest aspirations."

#PoetryMatters - Decay: This is one of the first poems that I memorized in Junior High. My English teacher had a thing for Shelley. The only thing that I understood was that two people were looking at a crumbled statue of a “king of kings” who thought that a hunk of stone would speak through the ages of his greatness, power and accomplishments, not thinking or not knowing that all things👇🏽

Nute breakdown, alter, rot, decay, return-to-dust over time including the memory/legacy of one supposedly so commanding and self high-regarded.

The_Penniless_Author I've always loved this poem. Ozymandias was the Greek name for Ramesses II, and he really did have a statue with an inscription similar to what's in the poem. It's a wonderful image. If Ramesses II - on the short list for most powerful person who ever lived - can have his accomplishments turn to dust and mostly forgotten, the rest of us hardly have cause to get a big head about ourselves 🙂 3y
Nute @vivastory Thank you, Scott! I am inspired to remark thoughtfully upon literature by the quality and passion of the reviews and comments that you post on Litsy. It is a moment of happiness to come across a post from you!💕 3y
Nute @The_Penniless_Author Isn‘t that the truth, Randall? How many discussions are there today among the general population about the power and wealth of Ramesses II? He was known as great in his time, but in the end like all of us reduced to decaying bones, dust and ashes and in his case, crumbling massive statues. I wonder if a legacy of humility and kindness is longer-lasting because it is passed on with greater enthusiasm by regular folks? 3y
The_Penniless_Author @Nute Indeed. You can even look at it in a meta sense - humility and kindness at the individual level helps create a stronger society, which leaves behind a better world for subsequent generations. Repeat enough times, and humanity can achieve a greatness even the most powerful individuals could only dream of. 3y
Nute @The_Penniless_Author Brilliantly said!!! And if you were before me right now we would be ‘hi-fiving‘ and hugging all over the place!🙌🏽😁Well, in a non-COVID reality!💕 3y

I wield the flail of the lashing hail,
And whiten the green plains under,
And then again I dissolve it in rain,

Thank you so much for these bookmarks, @Clwojick ! 😘😘

There‘s something so appealing about an ‘old author face‘ sticking out of your book. 😆 I love them!

(Left to right: Montaigne, Erasmus, Marvell, Shelley).

kricheal @Clwojick Where did you find these? 6y
Clwojick @kricheal eBay! I bought a pack of 30 for less than $4 🤗 6y
Clwojick @LeahBergen yay! I‘m glad you got them. I sent them out WAY later than expected 😶😬😳 sorry! 6y

LeahBergen @Clwojick Oh, no worries at all. They‘re so awesome! I‘ll be dropping a couple of bookmarks into the mail for you soon. 😘 6y
Clwojick Woohoo! Bookish mail is the bestest kind of mail. My phones trying to tell me that “bestest” is not a word, but clearly it doesn‘t know a thing about bookish mail. 6y
SilversReviews Awesome. 6y
LeahBergen @Clwojick And thanks to you, I just fell down the eBay rabbit hole of “30 packs of bookmarks” and ordered a whole set of these for myself. 😂😂 And some others! 6y
ValerieAndBooks How fun!! 6y
readordierachel Those are fab! 6y
Clwojick @LeahBergen I know! It‘s so bad! I think I bought 8 or 9 different sets. 🤣 so on top of matching myself with 10-12 people for the bookmark swap, I also purchased around 300, and almost none came in time for the swap. 😂😂😂 but my favourite set? The whale one ♥️🐋♥️ 6y
LeahBergen @Clwojick 😂😂 Yeah, I ordered 3 sets and I‘m expecting them to arrive around June sometime. I‘ll be set for any other swaps that come up! 😆 I only signed up for one person in your bookmark swap and I was STIFFED. 😩 That‘s another reason I was so happy to receive these from you. 😘 (edited) 6y
Clwojick They didn‘t send you a bookmark? 6y
Clwojick Omg. I wish I knew! Did you tell me, and I missed it? I would‘ve sent you a more personalized selection. Lol. Not that I didn‘t give you a handful with your Xmas gift, but still. ALL THE BOOKMARKS! 6y
LeahBergen @Clwojick Nope. Nothing! And you most definitely sent me lots with my Secret Santa and I loved them all! No worries there! 😘😘 6y
LeahBergen @Clwojick And no, I never mentioned it to you because, you know, it‘s just bookmarks. 😆 AND it wasn‘t your fault. 6y

#augustgrrrl #ironic Tough one today, so here goes!
I 💗 the 3 'Trip' movies. 2 comedians playing themselves in a kinda faux documentary- Michelin ⭐️food, gorgeous scenery and literary pilgrimages (Coleridge in U.K, Shelley in Italy, & Cervantes in Spain) with 2 middle aged men trying to out do each others celeb impressions! In Italy, they have only one CD in the car- Alanis Morrisette! Funny scene where they critique & singalong to ''Ironic'. 😊

LauraBrook Wait, there's a third movie? How did I miss this?!?! What's the title? 7y
KarenUK Just came out @LauraBrook I went to see it yesterday... 'Trip to Spain' 😊👍 (edited) 7y
LauraBrook @KarenUK Thank you! Will have to see if it's playing near me. 7y
Ms_T Well played! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7y

We look before and after,
And pine for what is not;
Our sincerest laughter
With some pain is fraught;
Our sweetest songs are those that tell
Of saddest thought.
