Wow. I think I like Saba better than Katniss in terms of dystopia. She is fiercely loyal to her brother even at great physical peril to herself. I got the warm and fuzzies with Saba finds Jack. The king made my skin crawl.

Y‘all, I tried. But there is only one author who has successfully used incorrect spelling and bad grammar to narrate the story in order to get us inside a character‘s head. This was NOT IT. The lack of quotation marks, the mangling of simple words, etc. was completely maddening — even more so when the author started breaking her own “rules”. It constantly distracted me from the actual story — one that I might have liked, if it were told better.

#currentlyreading | gritting my teeth through the stylistic choice to use incorrect grammar and phonetic spelling in the narration because apparently this book is worth it. We‘ll see, guys. We‘ll see. 😬

This book had a certain grammatical aspect that was very different, but that didn't matter as much in the long run as I really enjoyed reading this book. It was one of those stories for me where I had to pause a minute after I finished it and I just thought to myself: "bravo". Blood Red Road ended up being a pick for me, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a strong female lead.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I loved this series! I agree it was a little hard to get into in the beginning. But I'm a sucker for a strong female lead. 5y
Jerlynn @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Same! And Saba was definitely that😂 5y

I quit this book after two chapters. My main issue was the writing style. Poor spelling and grammar, misspelling of words to convey an accent... It was hard to tell when someone was talking, because there's no quotation marks! I was so confused trying to figure out who sad what. Sorry, but this writing is just not for me.

TheBookKeepers Continuous grammar mistakes irritate me too. 6y

Mehso-so

Meh. The gritty world and fast pacing kept me reading. Girl cage fighting. Giant killer worms! A prison escape. All exciting plot devices. Unfortunately, I just didn‘t like most of the characters. Even though Saba was a kick butt female main character, her whining got on my nerves along with her country twang. Plus she was so incredibly mean to her little sister. I don‘t see me finishing this trilogy.

Fabulous dystopian with a strong heroine who treks across a desert wasteland to rescue her brother. I never did get into books 2 or 3 but this one was 😍. #NoRain #90sinJuly

If you can get past the atrocious way this book is written, you'll find a forced romance and many uninteresting characters. Save yourself some pain and don't read this.

I have to say, by far one of the greatest books I've read. Saba's journey through the wasteland pulls you in and won't let you go until you've finished. The romance isn't overpowering, if anything, very subtle compared to the action; oh, and the ending, it will make you want the next one even more.
