Love Minus Eighty
Love Minus Eighty | Will McIntosh
In the future, love is complicated and death is not necessarily the end. Love Minus Eighty follows several interconnected people in a disquieting vision of romantic life in the century to come. There's Rob, who accidentally kills a jogger, then sacrifices all to visit her in a cryogenic dating facility, seeking forgiveness but instead falling in love.Veronika, a shy dating coach, finds herself coaching the very woman who is stealing the man she loves. And Mira, a gay woman accidentally placed in a heterosexual dating center near its inception, desperately seeks a way to reunite with her frozen partner as the years pass.In this daring and big-hearted novel based on the Hugo-winning short story, the lovelorn navigate a world in which technology has reached the outer limits of morality and romance.

Today was an emotional day. A few months back one of my guys passed after a long battle. Today we had a memorial service for him. Earlier someone asked me about books that provoked emotions for me. I could think of a lot of series finales (Dark Tower, Harry Potter etc) but Love Minus Eighty is one that really snuck up on me. It‘s more subtle but still touching and explores the complexities of modern life, despite its near future setting. RIP27❤️.

Guildedearlobe @BarbaraTheBibliophage I agree. Here‘s it complicated. I work with the developmentally disabled, in particular those with complex medical needs. Richie had cerebral palsy and was a spastic quadriplegic. I‘ve worked with him for over 16 years. We became close. I‘ve become close to his family. We‘ve spent the past 2 years in and out of the hospital. After he passed it was a tough mix of grief and relief and I was barely functional for a while. (edited) 6y
Guildedearlobe It‘s been two months since he passed and we finally were able to hold a memorial with the other residents he lived with as well as all the people whose life he touched. It was tough but easier than the funeral because we turned it more into a celebration of his life. 6y
Centique What a hard day 😥 And huge kudos to you for the work you do. I hope it was a wonderful celebration of his life 💕 6y
Weaponxgirl I'm so sorry for your loss. I worked with the elderly for years and I know that mixture of grief for their passing and relief that they're no longer suffering that makes you feel guilty well. The memorial sounds beautiful and sending a internet hug if you want it. 6y

Loved this book. What's going to really happen when technology takes over our lives and no one communicates face to face anymore, worse yet, what happens when you die and they can bring you back only if you have enough money?! Best word in this book, bridesicle! That says it all!!!

A YA/New Adult love story that's really about #allthefeelings. In a future world, the deceased are kept on ice until a sponsor rich enough to pay for the recovery & rehab of the "bridesicle" can be found. Kevin T. Collins (who sounds like a desperate John Cusack - total beta male!); Eileen Stevens (who may creep you out); and Ali Ahn are perfectly cast in this SFF tale that @Guildedearlobe put on his #audiobookpantheon altar! #TBT

currently listening to on audible. Not sure if it's the narrator but I tend to prefer other books and I'm not picking this up frequently although the story idea is very good... maybe a paperback would have been better.

Sci-fi is not an area of fiction that easily draws me in. But, this book drew me in with ease and kept my attention throughout; it is readily accessible to those of us who do not read sci-fi ever or hardly at all. Bizarre, character-driven and fun to read.

{More of my book thoughts are on my blog}

DitrieMarieBowie What's your preferred genre? 8y
ibeeeg @DitrieMarieBowie fantasy and historical fiction, but lately I've been a bit more eclectic with my reading. And you? What's your preferred genre? 8y
DitrieMarieBowie Fantasy, mystery, and sci-fi. 😊 I've found a few books that blur the line between fantasy and sci-fi, so your post made me curious. 8y
ibeeeg @DitrieMarieBowie I am curious, what books have you come across that blur the line between fantasy and sci-fi? I may be interested in reading those. 8y
DitrieMarieBowie Well the Dresden Files series is considered sci-fi but it has wizards, fairies, vampires, ghosts, and demons. Also A Game of Universe by Eric Nylund is science fiction-y but there's magic involved (or something very close to it). 8y

Sometimes a book is so great that you don't want to talk about it. No breakdowns or analyses, no critical assessments. You just want to live with it, not letting explanations lessen it somehow. Just go listen to it!

Guildedearlobe It's really quite an amazing book. I'm now obsessed with McIntosh. Even read his YA book which was fun. 8y
