A Portable Shelter
A Portable Shelter | Kirsty Logan
11 posts | 10 read | 39 to read
In their tiny, sea-beaten cottage on the north coast of Scotland, Liska and Ruth await the birth of their first child. Each passes the time by telling the baby stories, trying to pass on the lessons theyve learned: tales of circuses and stargazing, selkie fishermen and domestic werewolves, child-eating witches and broken-toothed dragons. But they must keep their storytelling a secret from one another, as theyve agreed to only ever tell the plain truth. So to cloak their tales, Ruth tells her stories when Liska is at work, to a background of shrieking seabirds; Liska tells hers when Ruth is asleep, with the lighthouse sweeping its steady beam through the window.

Finished my first book of #24in48! I worked today and went out to dinner so I haven‘t had a ton of reading time, but am happy I‘ve still been able to squeeze some in. This is the second book I‘ve read by Kirsty Logan; I really like her writing and it won‘t be my last. It‘s a short story collection but framed by the story of two mothers who promise to only tell their unborn child the truth who instead tell the child stories in secret. @24in48

I had such high expectations of this little book, in which two women tell stories to the baby they are expecting. I missed any form of coherence between the stories, which made it just a bundle of short stories. That can be fine but in this case it didn‘t work for me unfortunately. And I don‘t see why an unborn baby should only be told dark and depressing stories. Maybe I missed the point...

Kalalalatja Oh no, I loved this! But I see what you mean about the lack of coherence 6y
mellissimo I will celebrate Sinterklaas for the first time this year! My boyfriend lives in the netherlands and his family extra planned a sinterklaas celebration on the weekend so I could join them. I'm very excited! ^^ 6y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja The writing is beautiful, I agree, but I didn‘t get the point of the two women and the fact that they were not allowed to hear eachother‘s stories while they were not even about themselves. I really don‘t understand what this added to the stories 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y

A beautiful book of stories about everyday magic and a framing device meditating on truth and stories. The stories aren‘t all nice, but they are all thoughtful. #fantasy #shortstories

This short story collection retells all kinds of fairytales, it is beautifully written AND it is a #bookaboutmothers. The overall frame story is based on the couple Ruth and Liska, who are having their first child. The women tell the unborn baby stories, even though they promised each other not to lie. There's so many good stories in here, and I would urge everyone to pick it up 👍

Happy Mother's Day! ❤️

I was over the moon to find this limited print run edition in Scotland a few years back. As I remember it, only 1000 were printed and they were released months before any regular editions. But then I didn't read it. I've rectified that now, and it was lovely. A collection of stories that two women are telling their unborn child, whispered in secret when the other isn't paying attention. Full of myth and humanity and heartbreak.

Eyelit Pretty pretty! 8y

Combating book hangover with this lovely, magical collection. My favorite story so far is about a selkie fisherman, and I am a big fan. #FridayReads

A Portable Shelter is a collection of short stories. But it is also the story about Ruth and Liska, who are expecting their first child together. The women tell stories to their unborn child, and these are the short stories of the collection. The story about Ruth and Liska were so sweet and as much a part of the collection as the stories themselves. 👌

#PhotoADayNov16 Day 27 - Fairytale Retelling

Partners are expecting their first child, and they promise each other not to tell the child untruths. However, when one partner is at work, or the pregnant one is asleep, the other partner secretly tells the fetus stories.

Kirsty Logan's collection of short stories are actually retellings of Scottish folklore and fairytales - heartbreaking and beautifully written.

Another #Booktober Day 17 - Short Stories

A couple are expecting a baby, and they make a pact to only tell the child truths. However, they secretly tell the baby stories - when one partner is at work, and when the pregnant partner is asleep. There are truths within the stories, of course, and they are based on Scottish folklore and fairytales. Really beautifully written, this collection evokes strong feelings of late autumn at the seashore.

Kirstin Love the cover. 😍 8y
