The Red Rooster Cookbook
The Red Rooster Cookbook: The Story of Food and Hustle in Harlem | Marcus Samuelsson
11 posts | 9 read | 2 reading | 28 to read
Southern comfort food and multicultural recipes from the New York Times best-selling superstar chef Marcus Samuelssons iconic Harlem restaurant. When the James Beard Award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson opened Red Rooster on Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem, he envisioned more than a restaurant. It would be the heart of his neighborhood and a meet-and-greet for both the downtown and the uptown sets, serving Southern black and cross-cultural food. It would reflect Harlem's history. Ever since the 1930s, Harlem has been a magnet for more than a million African Americans, a melting pot for Spanish, African, and Caribbean immigrants, and a mecca for artists. These traditions converge on Roosters menu, with Brown Butter Biscuits, Chicken and Waffle, Killer Collards, and Donuts with Sweet Potato Cream. Theyre joined by global-influenced dishes such as Jerk Bacon and Baked Beans, Latino Pork and Plantains, and Chinese Steamed Bass and Fiery Noodles. Samuelssons Swedish-Ethiopian background shows in Ethiopian Spice-Crusted Lamb, Slow-Baked Blueberry Bread with Spiced Maple Syrup, and the Green Viking, sprightly Apple Sorbet with Caramel Sauce. Interspersed with lyrical essays that convey the flavor of the place and stunning archival and contemporary photos, The Red Rooster Cookbook is as layered as its inheritance.

This Audible Original wasn‘t in the Litsy database, but it was a conversation between Marcus Samuelsson & a number of guests as they talked & prepared recipes from the tagged cookbook. This was fabulous! I kind of wish every cookbook was like this. I didn‘t grow up in Harlem (though I did grow up in NY), but listening to these artists and musicians talk, cook, & eat was like being transported back home.⬇️⬇️⬇️

IndoorDame And through their conversations Marcus & his guests turned what I expected to be a book about food into a comprehensive history book about the Harlem Renaissance & The Great Migration. 3y

I started and stopped a few lit fic novels for the #foodandlit #ethiopia challenge in March, so ended up reading through this cookbook from the Ethiopian born author instead. So glad I finally did... beautiful photos and vignettes from his life in Harlem. Several recipes are also infused with Ethiopian flavors. ❤️👍🏻

Someone has taken @BookBabe & I up on the dinner offer 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Then again, she belongs to a couple of our bookclubs too 😆. @imagine.wonder.dream is here for some of our grub! Pictures later, but here is one of the trays of h'ors d'oeuvres already getting eaten up, lol! We haven't pulled out the shrimp cocktails yet. She said she realized she's at the right house when she saw all the books in the window 😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. #LitsyParty

❤????? #Endpapers #ReadJanuary #Cookbooks

Having listened to "Yes Chef" really got me intrigued not only about Samuelsson as a chef, but also about his very well known Harlem restaurant 'Red Rooster' which I hope to visit sometime in the warmer months.

In the meantime, I'm going to familiarize myself with more of the restaurant's backstory, menu & perhaps try a recipe or 3 with the help of this beautiful cookbook!

OK, ummmm...Marcus Samuelsson, I don't think you really want to eat confetti bass, right?

LindsayReads @McShelfington Just don't choke on the glitter! 8y
Abby-J Is this book awesome? Because I want it really badly, but it's so expensive. 8y
LindsayReads @Abby-J Seeing as I read cookbooks as food porn...it was just ok. 8y

Totally random: this beautiful rooster appeared in our backyard last night! Very tame and friendly. Put a notice on our neighborhood website but no one knows him. Apparently we are a bird refuge since a Cormorant appeared last week! (And for the record, I just looked for a title with "rooster" in it--would never harm it)! Even tho he woke us at the crack of dawn!???

PenguinInFlight We raised chickens when I was in high school...we had a rooster named Honey that was the sweetest thing. He would follow us around outside all the time, and loved to be picked up and petted. ❤️🐓 8y
Alfoster @PenguinInFlight Well, this may be our new pet--have a ceramic one in our garden window that grandkids named Beaky so this may be the real thing (tho not loving the wake-up calls so early)! 8y
PenguinInFlight @Alfoster That part I don't miss! (Especially when they aren't full grown and are learning to crow...they sound ridiculous. 😂) 8y

Alfoster @SharonGoforth He's very cute and friendly! But we're not in a rural area and not really set up for a rooster--unless he wants to take a swim in the pool! 8y
Suzze That is very cool! BTW, Red Rooster us the name of Marcus' restaurant in Harlem. 8y
Bette So the title red rooster cookbook wasn't supposed to send him on his way? 😂😂😂 8y

Another early birthday gift to myself. Marcus Samuelsson is my foodie crush. Did anyone else hear him on NPR the other day?

Hollie Dang it, I must have missed it on NPR. I'll have to check out that cookbook, though! 8y

I wanted to eat at Red Rooster ever since it opened in 2010, & got my chance this year. It was so worth the wait. Everything we had—cocktails to cornbread, fried chicken to fresh donuts—was so fantastic we agreed it was one of the best meals we‘d ever eaten. Samuelsson is sharing Red Rooster‘s recipes in this fantastic new cookbook, which not only captures the food but the spirit of the restaurant & the history, vibrancy, & culture of Harlem.-S.B.
