From the internationally bestselling author of The Island comes a stirring novel about loyalty, love, and resilience in the face of tremendous upheavala saga of survival set during the 1974 Cypriot coup dtat that tells the intersecting stories of three families whose lives are decimated when brewing ethnic tensions erupt into conflict. Summer 1972Famagusta is Cypruss most glamorous city and the most desirable tourist destination in the Mediterranean, and the Papacostas are right at the center of it. Aphroditi and her husband Savvas own The Sunrise, a wildly successful new luxury hotel. Frequented by only the very wealthiest of Europes elite, The Sunriseespecially its alluring nightclubquickly becomes the place to see and be seen. Yet beneath the veneer of tranquil opulence simmers mounting hostility between the Greeks and the Turks. Years of unrest and ethnic violence come to a head when, in 1974, Greeces coup dtat provokes a Turkish attack on beautiful Famagusta. The fallout sends the islands inhabitants spiraling into fear and chaos, and the Papacostas join an exodus of people who must abandon their idyllic lives in Famagusta and flee to refugee camps. In the end, only two families remain in the decimated city: the zkans and the Georgious. One is Turkish Cypriot, the other Greek Cypriot and the tension between them is palpable. But with resources scarce and the Turkish militia looming large, both families must take shelter in the deserted hotel as they battle illness, hunger, fear, and their own prejudices while struggling to stay alive. Juxtaposing a powerful narrative of war against the glittering affluence of the 1970s Mediterranean coast, The Sunrise is a moving story about the measures we take to protect what we love.

I finished my book club read for tomorrow, a novel set on Cyprus between the 1960s and 70s when there was a beautiful seaside town that ended up shut down and walled off during a Greek-Turkish conflict. The story focuses on a handful of people whose livelihoods depend on a robust tourist flow and how they are impacted by increasing violence as well as their family members joining opposite sides. I'm looking forward to our discussion.

This mornings sunrise over the lake. You can‘t quite see the water in this but don‘t the colours of the sky make up for it? It‘s a pity we can‘t post video, you‘d be able to hear the kookaburras & rainbow lorikeets greeting the morning. Wish I didn‘t have to go home but my garden needs me!🌼 #sunrisesoflitsy

A sad story of how quickly a place can change and people lose everything. The focus on two families who were so different in many ways but ended up living such similar lives was clever.

I have been to sound Cyprus and have Greek Cypriot friends so already knew about the conflict. However I really enjoyed reading this book learning more about the politics at the time and the fictional story that could have been true. Heart breaking that the divide in Cyprus still exists and the fact that famagusta is a complete ghost town now, left exactly as when people fled. Anyone been to north Cyprus?

Moving, engrossing and as beautifully written as with all her novels. This is the story of some of the Greek and Turkish Cypriots of Famagusta when invasion comes without warning.
