Loving
Loving | Henry Green
Loving is set in the vast hereditary house of the Tennants, an aristocratic Anglo-Irish family, but the story mainly involves their servants. The war has led to a scarcity of experienced staff, and when Eldon the butler dies, Raunce the head doorman is assigned his job. The other servants are taken aback by this irregular promotion, but lovely young Edith, a recent hire, is quite attracted to the older Raunce and a flirtation begins. And it is Edith who discovers Mrs. Tennant's daughter, whose husband is fighting at the front, in bed with a neighbor one morning, scandalizing the whole household. When the Tennants depart for England, Raunce is left in charge of the house and struggles to control its disputatious inhabitants as well as to secure the love of Edith, especially after a precious family jewel disappears. In Loving, Henry Green explores the deeply precarious nature of ordinary life against the background of the larger world at war.

A modern take on the Victorian wealthy estate novel. This focuses on the servants, is written almost exclusively in dialogue, and has quite a lot of sexual tension. Took me a while to get into the style of writing, but in the end I thought it was brilliant. #nyrb #1001books

Mehso-so

The book is about the servants of Mrs. Tennant in Ireland. It was a soap opera of gossiping, back stabbing, etc. Then there is the whole complexity of servant vs owner and Irish vs English. I wasn't sure how to feel about the characters, I didn't really connect with any of them. I thought the story came full circle. The ending sentence was a little fairy tale like. I think the ending was commentary on the servants point of view. #1001books

The #anglophileapril version of a #harddaysnight is best exemplified through the servants of an aristocratic British family, am I right?! This 1940‘s English novel focuses on the servants who are living their lives in contrast to the war... dealing with scandal within their own household and finding love amongst one another.

Reviewsbylola Good pick and wow, what a cover! 6y
BarbaraBB I‘m no fan of Green but this was an okay one I think. 6y
emilyhaldi Oh no, not a fan?! @BarbaraBB I haven‘t read anything by him... Now I'm nervous 😬 6y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi Don‘t be, it‘s just me. I like the blurbs of his books better than the stories themselves 😂 6y

OK, boys and girls, I think I might finally have found a book with a verb in its title that I can sink my teeth into… Here I go! (And the e-book is only five bucks on iBooks!)

saresmoore Now, this seems like a solid choice! Fortunately, Hide was new to me this year (thanks to you!) so that counted for my verb space. But I'm also tempted to try and fill it with the four-verb whammy of 8y
shawnmooney @saresmoore Four Verb Whammy, indeed! 💜💜 I still haven't got to Baume's 8y

Taking a break from Scandinavian crime thrillers to get started on this month's book club selection for the library where I work. It's looking like a perfect read for a soggy PNW morning.
