Swamp Angel
Swamp Angel | Ethel Wilson
17 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 18 to read
Walking out on a demoralizing second marriage, Maggie Lloyd leaves Vancouver to work at a fishing lodge in the interior of British Columbia. But the serenity of Maggies new surroundings is soon disturbed by the irrational jealousy of the lodge-keepers wife. Restoring her own broken spirit, Maggie must also become a healer to others. In this, she is supported by her eccentric friend, Nell Severance, whose pearl-handled revolver the Swamp Angel becomes Maggies ambiguous talisman and the novels symbolic core. Ethel Wilsons best-loved novel, Swamp Angel first appeared in 1954. It remains an astute and powerful study of one womans integrity and of the redemptive power of compassion. From the Paperback edition.

I‘ve started randomly selecting titles from my shelves and the strategy has yet to disappoint!

What a wonderful little book, packed with a bit of everything and so many of life‘s lessons.
Wonderfully written, wish it had been longer.
Loved Maggie, the MC, very brave and wise 💕
@saresmoore truly, I think you will love this.

Cathythoughts Lovely review 6y
LeahBergen Well, I guess as a good Canadian I should read this. 😆 6y

TrishB @Cathythoughts thank you 💕 6y
TrishB @LeahBergen I‘m guessing it‘s a school read in Canada! This is exactly the book I would have read in school and hated and loved 10 years later. I read with a map open in google at lunchtime so I could get some pictures of the geography! 6y
TrishB @saresmoore you‘ll be glad it‘s on the pile 💕 6y
Melissa_J I‘ve never heard of this, but the blurb reminds me of Margaret Laurence‘s books @LeahBergen 6y
shawnmooney Just saw this now! Yes @LeahBergen you must read it! Glad to hear @TrishB liked it and expect @saresmoore shall too! 5y
TrishB @shawnmooney I had to refresh my brain to remember what this one was! ❤️ 5y
shawnmooney @TrishB Was it an old post? My Litsy app dates ALL posts as more than 10 years old for some reason. 5y
TrishB @shawnmooney not quite 10, but a year old 😁 5y

Ddzmini True but even perfect love is not perfect 😝😜 6y
BookHermit @Ddzmini I have no idea what perfect love would be. Maybe perfect love is perfect in its imperfection? 😂 6y

A first meeting. A meeting in the desert, a meeting at sea, meeting in the city, meeting at night, meeting at a grave, meeting in the sunshine beside the forest, beside water. Human beings meet, yet the meetings are not the same. Meeting partakes in its very essence not only of the persons but of the place of meeting. And that essence of place remains, and colors, faintly the association, perhaps forever.

Lindy ❤️this novel! 6y
BookHermit @Lindy A thousand times yes. (edited) 6y

#SoFar
My favorite reads of the year so far.

Cinfhen Nice! Can you detect a common thread? 7y
shawnmooney @Cinfhen Great question! I guess the common thread is I didn't bail on any of them! 😂😂But seriously, I'll have a think and get back to you! 😍 7y
saresmoore ⅔ female authors! 7y

shawnmooney @saresmoore @Cinfhen And 1/3rd non-white, a ninth lesbian, a ninth gay, a ninth Mennonite! 😀 7y
saresmoore Ha! Probably not a lot who can add Mennonite to their reading stats! 7y
Suet624 Love the list - it's helpful for me to find them at the library - and the photo. 😂 7y

Pickpick

This central image in this 1954 novel about a woman reinventing herself after leaving an unhappy marriage is of her friend, an old woman, juggling a revolver. Huh? I invite you to fall into this story, to delight in how Ethel Wilson juggles the urban and the natural, the potent tensions of rebellion, reinvention, and convention in women's lives. I hope that it all spins in the air for you as kaleidoscopically—as meaningfully—as it did for me.

LeahBergen I want to read this ... but in that old edition! ❤️ 7y

I studied this at university a million years ago, and all I can remember about it is that I loved it. Now that I've re-read the first chapter, I can definitely see why!

Lindy I love this one too. 😊 7y
shawnmooney @Lindy I saw that on GR. Yay! I feel a need to proselytize here on Litsy about it, given that no one's read or reviewed it here so far. I shall first micro-target @LeahBergen and @saresmoore, who I suspect would each loooove it. 7y
saresmoore I was just going to say that a co-endorsement with Lindy was enough to induce me to read this. But then I wondered if @LeahBergen had read it. 🤔 I think I ought to step away from Litsy before something breaks in the space-time continuum. 7y

Lindy The reason I picked this up for the first time, a few years ago, is because there's a book prize named for the author. I figured that meant she must have been a good writer. I suggested this for a book club and the love was unanimous. 7y
LeahBergen Ooo, this DOES sound good. Why haven't I heard of this author?? 😮 7y
LeahBergen @saresmoore Our interconnectedness is becoming creepy. 😂😂 7y

I either studied this Canadian classic at university or just read it way back then - all these years later, the only thing I recall is that I loved it. Time for a re-read!

Suzze There are so many books that, when someone mentions them, I say "I loved that!" Even though that is all I remember. I guess the feelings stick with us longer! 7y
