The Witch's Boy
The Witch's Boy | Kelly Barnhill
22 posts | 20 read | 36 to read
This spellbinding fantasy begs for a cozy chair and several hours of uninterrupted reading time. The Washington Post When Ned and his identical twin brother tumble from their raft into a raging river, only Ned survives. Villagers are convinced the wrong boy lived. Across the forest that borders Neds village, ine, the daughter of the Bandit King, is haunted by her mothers last words: The wrong boy will save your life, and you will save his. When the Bandit King comes to steal the magic Neds mother, a witch, is meant to protect, ine and Ned meet. Can they trust each other long enough to cross a dangerous enchanted forest and stop the war about to boil over between their two kingdoms? Barnhill is a fantasist on the order of Neil Gaiman. Minneapolis Star Tribune [The Witchs Boy] should open young readers eyes to something that is all around them in the very world we live in: the magic of words. I loved it! This book did feel a little drawn out at times, but the story was really lovely. I love Kelly Barnhill‘s brain. This is my witchy read for the week. #Screamathon @4thhouseontheleft

Oh wow! I raided! @Laughterhp this box was so awesome. I only had the hairibo long enough to take the picture. Josh ate them when I stepped away.

All those books are going to keep me so busy!! Thank you so much. I love it all.

LibrarianRyan @WanderingBookaneer not to bad. She has been sleeping in the bathtub to keep the dogs away at night just in case. But she has been making her self at home. She will probably be up in the next 30 min or so. 3y

I loved this middle grade fantasy. Not quite as good as The Girl Who Drank the Moon, but really wonderful. Great characters, wonderful themes, ad really stellar writing. Just lovely.

Read for Children's Literature class. I really appreciated the world-building in this middle-grade novel; the way in which the magic was presented as an enticing, corrupting force was interesting. Strong female characters in Sister Witch, the Queen, and Aine herself are compelling. I just feel like the pacing was a little bit slow; it picked up once Ned and Aine met.

@monalyisha 😭😭😭 you made me ugly cry. Words cannot express how humbled I am at such an amazing gift. You got me. Perfectly. The intention sticks?? 💚 The hand written notes?? 💚 The magic beans!! 💚 Not to mention the ARC of The Witch's Boy! 💚 I love Girl Who Drank The Moon so this has been so high on my TBR. This deserves something pretty special in return and I'll work on it over the new year, because you have made me one happy witch. 💚

monalyisha I‘m so happy that it got to you safely & that it speaks to you! 🖤 You deserve it. 🔮🌱 5y

There storyline was good but the writing was great. I would be interested in anything Barnhill choose to write about. She has a way that reminds me of Gaimen without the cynical edge.

I enjoyed this middle grade fantasy/fairy tale. It‘s a coming-of-age/quest story, with ancient magic, an enchanted forest, long-forgotten standing stones, and some wonderful themes of love and family and friendship. I also really appreciated the understated representation, with women included both as soldiers & guards as well as in the bandit horde. And I‘m liking this #bookrainbow, courtesy of a prism in the window! #makemereadit book 4 complete!

Starting #makemereadit book 4. This is book 3 out of the 4 I brought with me on vacation—and I‘ve still got a week before we head home. 😱 I may have to resort to Hoopla and Libby to tide me over. Or, you know: buy some more books. 😏 (Confession: I already bought one for myself while doing some swap shopping yesterday!)

I don‘t have any pumpkins or skulls on my shelves (not directly, anyway), but I have quite a few witches. The tagged book is from my #TBR... a random ARC gifted by my used-bookstore-working friend. Then I connected the author with The Girl Who Drank the Moon and it got pushed up much higher in the pile!

BarbaraJean @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It has such a great cover! I liked this one, but bogged down in the second book. I may try again someday, but I don‘t know that I‘ll re-read this one. Would you like to have my copy?! It‘s a used paperback and nothing special, but I‘d be happy to send it to you! 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @BarbaraJean really??!! Yes! I would love it!!! That‘s so sweet!!! 7y

The boys' mother heard the muttering, but did not respond. People would think what they liked, and would likely think wrong. This was nothing new. ~perfect read the night before a solar eclipse.

I was about to put the book down and then realized how much I like its spine ♥️
The writing is wonderful and focuses all on the characters, their relationships and emotions, rather than on world-building and I enjoy that a lot. It's not the kind of book you can't put down, but that makes it a very relaxed read and the story moves still quickly.

Tsubame @Onioons You really should read it, because the girl and you have the same name 😉 7y

I liked it. I can't articulate, the why of it but I did. Maybe it's because I'm always a sucker for stories about underdogs overcoming the odds.

A good benefit of helping grandma with a yard sale is that she gives you a portion of her profits so you can get a new book and bookmark.
Maybe I'll add this to the #24in48 tbr pile.
