Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers can get a taste of the real world. But the real world comes to her in this dystopian tale with a philosophical bent. Rumors of massive unrest on the Outside abound. Something murderous is out there. Amish elders make a rule: No one goes outside, and no outsiders come in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man, she cant leave him to die. She smuggles him into her familys barnat what cost to her community? The suspense of this vividly told, truly horrific thriller will keep the pages turning.

A horror story about vampires and the Amish sounded interesting to me, and while it delivered on gore and spookiness I was left really annoyed with some character's choices and the way the tale unfolded. There's no resolution to some of the conflicts (perhaps in the sequel, but this one I probably will pass on).

This book and its sequel! What a ride, this one had to spend the night in the freezer after one scene. I wish she would write a third one.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 108.

I really liked how different this book was in combining dystopian literature with supernatural and religion. Setting this book in an Amish community made it very different and interesting. I also appreciated the fact that the disease did not turn into a bunch of zombies as I feel like it is being overdone. It was a bit slow in parts and needed more action. And some of the religious content was a bit dry.

My reading buddy! I just finished The Hallowed Ones in one day and immediately bought The Outside because I had to know what happened next.

#HallowedGrounds This book is a good pick. Set in an Amish community, the outside world has been attacked by unknown creatures. The only safe place is the ground the Amish community lives on and the creatures can‘t get in. #HallowReads

I feel like the struggle of faith is more important and more the basis for the tale than anything else. Didn't think it was absolutely fabulous but it's an interesting tale.

Sometimes books just click and sometimes they don't. After seeing the rave reviews and loving the take on the vampire/vampire hunter genre-an Amish hunter?, I wanted to love this book. I found it very slow and desired anything to happen (it doesn't until pg 200). It is a very long prequel to the next book. The writing was good although if I read-she put her fist in her mouth one more time, I was going to do the same. It was ok.

It is rainy and cloudy and with most of the internet down, I decided a bit of reading is in order. This has such a great concept and a different take on the Vampire genre. An Amish village is one of the few surviving humans because it is considered hallowed ground and vamps can't go into it unless invited. The only negative is it is so slow moving, Amish style. It does take its time.

intothehallofbooks I read this recently too! 😊 7y

A girl in an Amish community takes in an outsider during a vampire apocalypse against the advice of her elders. Strangely, this decision doesn't actually cause any havoc.

Well, I officially need the sequel. Fingers crossed it's available on Japanese Amazon. This was a fun, fast read full of so much that I love: teenage rebellion, farm life, myths, crushes and angst, dog love, and vampires. More mom-can't-handle-this gore, but it didn't linger. Though it is 1am, so who knows 😂😴😲 #hellooctober #mommyreads #nursingwithbooks #vampires #ya

My first 🎃 #seasonsreading!
Amish community vs vampires: sounds crazy, but this is not a traditional take on vampires nor is this traditional Amish fiction. It was creepy + suspenseful. It definitely was not boring.

MC Katie is independent + headstrong, which is trouble from the start in terms of being traditionally Amish. I love that she stands up for herself + is also incredibly brave in trying to help out her community. The end surprised me!

Bette I liked it too, it was unusual. Did you read the sequel? 😊👍 8y

#currentlyreading + ☕️

I am obsessed with stories featuring the Amish. But a scary Amish story? That's new for me.

This is my first fall/Halloween read of this season. I always have more trouble finding these than the winter/Christmas stories.

Vampires. Among the Amish. Need I say more? (Okay, fine. This is a quietly scary, underrated YA gem. Definitely one of my favorite horror series.)
