The Pleasure of My Company
The Pleasure of My Company: A Novel | Steve Martin
From the bestselling author of Shopgirl comes the tender story of a troubled man who finds love, and life, in the most unexpected place. Daniel resides in his Santa Monica apartment, living much of his life as a bystander: He watches from his window as the world goes by, and his only relationships seem to be with people who barely know he exists. He passes the time idly filling out contest applications, counting ceiling tiles, and estimating the wattage of light bulbs. It is through Daniel's growing attachment to Clarissa, and to Teddy, that he finally gains the courage to begin to engage the world outside, and in doing so, he discovers love, and life, in the most surprising places. Filled with his trademark humor, tenderness, and out and out hilarious wordplay, The Pleasure of My Company is a tour de force sure to delight all of Steve Martin's fans.

I finished this yesterday (Week 3), but didn't have Wi-Fi in the airport. It's not as good as I remember it being (nor as good as I remember his other books being).

This is from my December TBR list for #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers @StayCurious

I am having a hard time reading this one...but since it is so short I‘m going to go ahead a muscle my way through it.

Finished The Genius Plague (4 stars - a very good book. It took we a while to finish this one. Not because of the book but because of the craziness of my life right now.). And now on to the next one...The Pleasure Of My Company.

A jaunt that explores the adult life of Daniel Pecan Cambridge. Sure, Daniel's life is quirky. He sort of rolls through life until he decides to enter an essay contest. I throughly enjoyed this story. I won't tell more about it so that I don't spoil any details for anyone who reads this review. If you find yourself looking for a book that is easy to read and enjoyable, this might be what you're looking for.

I found out Steve Martin wrote a book and I had to sample one. Daniel was strange. Daniel was quirky yet fun. During certain situations, Daniel felt like me. Or at least I put myself into his encounters and thought, "Yep, that's probably what it'd be like for me too." The friends that accompanied him made the story even better — perfect additions to his "magic square."

Day Two- #allthebooksof2017 This was the shortest book I read this year at 163 pages. I can‘t recommend Steve Martins book enough. The are short, smart and funny.

Have any of my fellow Littens read this book? Would you recommend? Please let me know. ☺️

everlocalwest I really liked Shopgirl and An Object of Beauty...I know I read this one too but I remember nothing about it so my rec would be check out the other two first if you haven't read them. 😸 7y
Clwojick @everlocalwest I have shopgirl! Haven't read it yet though. 7y
readinginthedark I‘ve read this one! It always surprises me when I enjoy Martin‘s books, because he doesn‘t write the type of things I usually like, but I liked it. He narrates a lot of his own audiobooks, which makes them great listens! 7y
hgrimes My husband loves this book. I started to read it and it just wasn‘t for me. Give it a shot though! 7y

#fallintobooks When I think awkward I think Daniel Pecan Cambridge. This is one of my favorite Steve Martin characters. He barely leaves the house, has a lot of crazy quirks and wins the Most Average American essay contest. I highly recommend if you liked Don from the Rosie Project.

#anditsaugust Steve Martin has some amazing smart funny quick reads. Here are two of my favs😊

Clwojick I keep kicking myself for not picking up Shopgirl when I seen it at the thrift store for $1 a few months back. I haven't seen another copy since. 🙈 7y
Liatrek @Clwojick I hate when that happens ☹️ 7y
nicholes.book.nook I adored Shopgirl! 💛 7y
Clwojick You must be my good luck! I went to a new thrift store right by my work today, and found a Steve Martin book I've been meaning to read for only 50 cents! Have you read this one? 7y
Liatrek @Clwojick Awesome😊 Yes, I have read that one it's a really interesting look into the art world. I hope you like it. 7y

Amanda: "I was skeptical to read a book written by an actor but Steve Martin is funny, so I went for it. The main character is in his 30s, unemployed, and talks to his therapist every week. He's afraid of curbsides. Some of his social anxieties I relate to – like dealing with people. If someone is unwilling to listen, that makes someone very hard to deal with. I feel like a lot of people are not listening right now." #newyork
