11 posts | 12 read | 13 to read
Catherynne M. Valente enchanted readers with her spellbinding In the Night Garden. Now she continues to weave her storytelling magic in a new book of Orphans Talesan epic of the fantastic and the exotic, the monstrous and mysterious, that will transport you far away from the everyday. Her name and origins are unknown, but the endless tales inked upon this orphans eyelids weave a spell over all who listen to her read her secret history. And who can resist the stories she tells? From the Lake of the Dead and the City of Marrow to the artists who remain behind in a ghost city of spice, here are stories of hedgehog warriors and winged skeletons, loyal leopards and sparrow calligraphers. Nothing is too fantastic, anything can happen, but youll never guess what comes next in these intimately linked adventures of firebirds and djinn, singing manticores, mutilated unicorns, and women made entirely of glass and gears. Graced with the magical illustrations of Michael Kaluta, In the Cities of Coins and Spice is a book of dreams and wonders unlike any youve ever encountered. Open it anywhere and you will fall under its spell. For here the story never ends and the magic is only beginning. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Oh, Catherynne Valente, you weave the most weird and wonderful tales. The ending of this duology was nothing short of perfect.

Finally finished this one yesterday- it was so good but dense as it has tales within tales and I must cherish every word Valente writes. My dogs snuggled up for naps after play fighting and tugging and chasing for two or three hours. Calli is the cutie pictures here we adopted her almost two weeks ago and she‘s such a loving dog. #dogsoflitsy

Squeezing in some reading of this amazingly written book. I think Valente is one of my favorite storytellers - I love these stories within stories. My dogs are not all that chill as it‘s morning but they‘ve let me read a chapter or two so far. #dogsoflitsy

Zelma Valente is one of my favorites as well. I trust her and will read anything she writes. 6y

8little_paws That looks like Moody's Pub in Edgewater, Chicago. Am I right, or is there a doppelganger out there? 8y

Deciding what to read next (besides 'In the Cities of Coins and Spice'). I cut my TBR list down to these;
- The Book of Lost Things
- When Marnie Was There
- The Versions of Us
- The Love That Split the World

Have to choose only one though. Any suggestion? XD

BookishFeminist Book of Lost Things! 9y
LauraBrook The Love That Split The World. It's the only one of those that I own. 9y
Coleen The Versions of Us. How's that for a split vote? 😜 9y

pppooraikul @BookishFeminist @LauraBrook @Coleen You guys are kidding me! 😂😂 Should I go ahead and pick When Marnie Was There then? lol 9y
Fullaboti The love that split the world--its a beautiful book and it takes place in Summer! 9y
Coleen I chose the one that I have on TBR. 😏 9y
pppooraikul @Fullaboti Your choice makes it two votes for the book. hehe. 😁 9y
pppooraikul @Coleen It'll be my next read (maybe a few months later, I'm on a tight schedule here lol). Wanna join? ;) 9y
Coleen If only! I'm always on a tight reading schedule. Never seem to get to just pick a book at leisure anymore -- I don't seem to read as fast as most of these Litsy people. Always behind on book club or ARC's. But I guess there are worse problems to have! 9y
pppooraikul @Coleen There sure is! And I don't mind take it slow for now. There'll come a day when I could spend my full time reading! 9y
